Spiky Ant are simple Ant enemies, but with spikes all over. If Mario jumps on them, he will gain damage. They should not be jumped on while the spikes are out. They only appear in the Macro Zone of Super Mario Land 2.
Sometimes they will appear spikeless, and then stop to stick out their spikes. In these cases, you can tell that it will sprout spikes because it lacks antennae. Mario must jump over them to avoid it like most other spike enemies. They are defenseless to a fireball regardless of weather or not their spikes are erected.
