Similar to Super Mario 3D World and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker before it, Super Mario Odyssey contains 8-bit characters hidden throughout the game. Unlike most 8-bit characters in previous games, all of the ones in Super Mario Odyssey can be interacted with and can give the player items.

Cat Mario, Cat Peach, and Rosalina

These characters appear on walls throughout the game. Hitting Cat Mario or Rosalina with Cappy will reward the player 10 coins, and hitting Cat Peach will reward the player a heart.

Several kingdoms		Cat Mario sometimes pops out of a bush when Mario walks through it.
Cap Kingdom		Cat Mario is hidden in the fog, underneath the four ? Blocks on the side of Glasses Bridge.
		Cat Peach is in a pool of water on top of the entrance structure inside of Top-Hat Tower. It can be reached by finding Hidden Blocks and jumping off of them with a Frog.
Cascade Kingdom		Cat Mario is hidden behind the breakable rocks on top of the Trampoline nearest the Odyssey. It is revealed by breaking through the rocks with a T-Rex.
		Cat Peach is on the side of a step near the Stone Bridge, near the entrance to the chasm lifts sub-area.
Sand Kingdom		Cat Mario is high on the wall on the back side of the Slots building.
		Cat Peach is on the side of the large staircase in the Tostarena Ruins that leads down into the quicksand.
Lake Kingdom		Cat Mario is on the wall behind the stairs that lead up to the Courtyard.
		Cat Peach is at the end of a small corridor on the left side of the Water Plaza.
Wooded Kingdom		Cat Mario is on the side of the raised section of Captain Toad's far-off platform.
		Cat Peach is in an alcove behind the large slope on the Iron Mountain Path.
Lost Kingdom		Cat Mario is on the back of a wall on the mountain path, above two breakable blocks.
		Cat Peach is on the edge of the raised platform with the entrance to the Klepto sub-area, just below the Rocky Mountain Summit.
Metro Kingdom		Cat Mario is behind the archway on the front of New Donk City Hall.
		Cat Peach is behind the curtains on the right side of the stage inside the New Donk City Hall auditorium.
Snow Kingdom		Cat Mario is on the wall just below the bottom of the slide to Snowline Circuit.
		Cat Peach is in the Corner of the Freezing Sea, on the tall wall of ice that surrounds the kingdom.
Seaside Kingdom		Cat Mario is on the wall of one of the Gushen tunnels in the cliffside, nearest to the Odyssey.
		Cat Peach is on the northern side of the Lighthouse, at the bottom.
Luncheon Kingdom		Cat Mario is on the side of a pillar behind the costume room in Peronza Plaza.
		Cat Peach is at the end of a thin ledge below the Meat Plateau.
Bowser's Kingdom		Cat Mario is on the side of a rock at the bottom of the moat in the Main Courtyard.
		Cat Peach is on the side of the stairway leading to the final spark pylon.
Moon Kingdom		Cat Mario and Cat Peach are both on the back of the Wedding Hall, high up near the roof.
Mushroom Kingdom		Cat Mario is on the side of the bridge crossing the small stream near the Odyssey.
		Cat Peach is in a window on the central spire of Peach's Castle.
Dark Side		Rosalina is on the side of a large stone pumpkin near the spark pylon leading to the Broodals' tower.
Darker Side		Rosalina is on the back side of New Donk City Hall, near the bottom.

Luigi sightings

Unlike the previous characters, Pixel Luigis were not originally in the game. Throughout 2018, Nintendo posted Hint Art on social media, hinting to where these Luigis could be found. The Luigis acted like Hint Art Power Moons, where they would be revealed after ground pounding in the correct spot. For a few weeks after Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was released on the Switch, these Luigis were replaced with Pixel Captain Toads, although they were reverted back to Luigi afterwards.

Cascade Kingdom			Next to the fossil rocks in the northeast corner of the kingdom, directly underneath a Bullet Bill fossil.
Sand Kingdom			Directly below the Southwestern Floating Island right in the middle of the shadow.
			In the small pile of sand on top of the Slots building.
Lake Kingdom			On a large tile just outside the Crazy Cap shop, right next to the Water Plaza exit.
Wooded Kingdom			On top of a platform sticking out of the wall in the middle of the wall of breakable rocks.
Cloud Kingdom			On the edge of the arena, just behind where Peach is. The location is shown on the hint art as being right between columns 3 and 4 and rows B and C on the map.
Lost Kingdom			Next to a Tropical Wiggler, across from the Swamp Hill checkpoint.
			Next to a tree with red leaves, on the west side of the starting area.
Metro Kingdom			In the pool on the roof of the building west of New Donk City Hall, directly on the moon in the New Donk City logo.
			Directly in the middle of the intersection between K. Rool and Expresso streets.
Seaside Kingdom			In the western area with the upside-down Komboos, on the edge of the depression with regional coins further from the Odyssey.
Luncheon Kingdom			On the Remote Island in the Lava, directly below the pepper dispenser.
			On the row of small pillars leading away from Peronza Plaza, on the third one from the end.
Bowser's Kingdom			On the edge of the rooftop, directly next to the easternmost golden Bowser head.
Moon Kingdom			On the edge of a crater that a Moonsnake rolls over, somewhat near the Odyssey. The hint art indicates a section of the kingdom's brochure.
Mushroom Kingdom			On the edge of the curved path leading down to the Mushroom Pond.
			On the grass directly next to the platform at the top of the stairs leading down to the castle moat.

Captain Toad sightings

These two sightings were added during the Captain Toad event, and therefore have always been Pixel Captain Toads and did not change back to Pixel Luigis after the event ended.
