The 'Shroom:Issue 229/Pipe Plaza
Director's Notes
Hello everyone and happy April!! I don't know about you, but the phrase "April showers bring May flowers" is definitely coming to life for me, because we've had QUITE a bit of rain here this month. I better be seeing sooooo many pretty flowers next month...
I feel like lately my life has turned into Sidequest City, because it feels like if I'm not at work, I'm ALWAYS doing something else. I don't entirely know how to feel about it... That's also part of why there's no Muppetational Origins this month. Please forgive me ^^;;
Pipe Plaza is small but mighty this month! And don't forget that we're always accepting applications for new writers! Take this as your sign to write about that thing you know and love and could DEFINITELY speak on for hours if given the opportunity. Just head over to the sign up page to learn more!
Hopefully the rest of your month isn't as jam packed with sidequests as mine seems to be ;;;
Section of the Month
Congratulations to this month's winners! In first place, we have Yoshi18 (talk) with Yoshi18 Overviews! Taking silver, we have Paper Plumm (talk) with Poll Committee Discussion! Finally, finishing out our podium, we have Camwoodstock (talk) with To-Do Tracker! Thank you to everyone who votes for their favorite sections as well.

Mario Calendar
Happy April, everyone!! I honestly cannot believe we're already through a third of 2026. I know I need to get used to the fact that time flies by way faster than I want it to, but… time really flies by way faster than I want it to!! Anyways, welcome to Mario Calendar! I'm sure you know what this is but, if not, allow me to explain. You love Mario games, right? Of course you do. But, have you ever considered where those games actually come from? When they were made? You probably have, but I'm gonna tell you anyways.

I'm gonna be honest… there's almost NOTHING I can really say about this month that I have not already said. This is a really, really weak month. In most months, you can point to SOME cool release, like this month's release of Super Paper Mario or Super Mario Land. But, there's really just not all that much to talk about.
So, instead, I want to give a brief shoutout to Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, which should have just come out as of the time of this issue's release! I grew up with Tomodachi Life for the 3DS, and it is one of my favorite games of all time. I can't wait to try out the new game, and I feel justified in including it here because we will all surely include some Mario-related Miis. So it totally counts.
But, yeah, April is pretty weak in the world of Mario Calendar. So, what say we wrap it up here? See you next month :)

Howdy! How's April treating you? It's been... Weird over here. But, we're managing. We hope you enjoyed our April Fools event this year! We're pretty proud of what we were able to add to it... But, enough about that. Let's get down to brass tacks. And even though the data collection landed on April Fool's Day, we can assure you, the values are no joke!

For some observations for how the numbers have progressed, and some potential targets:
- Every stub/rewrite/construction has been to-do-ified! Some have been resolved pretty quickly, some have joined the fray unrelated to the conversion. From now on, To-do lists will, of course, be tracked on the bar, and this column.
- Out of moves/merges/splits, merges and splits had only slight net changes, while moves finally dipped below 50. Congratulations to it!
- The last-minute leaps in missing romanizations and unknown meanings can be attributed to a lot of Thai text from Super Mario Bros. Wonder being located.
- That spike in Images Needed, technically, isn't anything new. Multiple pages were previously manually using the "No images" image to specify a size for it. This meant there was a desync between how many pages the "No images" image was actually used on, and how many pages actually needed images according to the maintenance category. Recently, however, the actual {{No image}} template got the functionality to resize the image, rendering this approach obsolete. These have each been replaced with the template accordingly, hence the spike in the category size.
- It's not particularly visible in the data set, but from now on, Unused Files (as well as other attributes that involve manually-specified quantities) have an extra bit of granularity in how their numbers are set. From 100 to 500, it rounds down to the nearest multiple of 50. Keep on the lookout for that in the coming weeks!

Analysis
Mar10 Day brought many announcements and trailers with it this year! Which one was your favorite? (TheBlueCatMenace, March 15, 2026)
The first of three polls we'll look at celebrates Mar10 Day, brought to us by TheBlueCatMenace! I haven't seen any of the announcements myself, but they're all very awesome and got plenty of folks hyped up for what's to come! This poll received a total of 2,147 votes.
In ninth place with just 17 votes, it's Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 themed TETRIS 99 Grand Prix! TETRIS 99 Grand Prix has had many different themes ever since it's been released, but this one focuses on the recent collection featuring both Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel. It's a niche topic, but it still has its fans!
Moving on to 8th place with 45 votes is Something not listed here! The voters like something that isn't listed here, that's all. Nothing else to say.
Oh boy! 7th place is the Mar10 Day Sale! Earning 47 votes (2 more than the previous choice), some people find temporary price drops to be more meaningful to them rather than the other stuff, and that's perfectly fine! It's the perfect opportunity to buy a gift for a friend or relative. Unless it's a physical copy, it'll be hard to keep it a secret until a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary, but it'll still make them happy! Nothing like saving some precious cash.
OK, sixth place! Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Mario Clash and Mario's Tennis added to Nintendo Classics earned itself 56 votes, which is still on the lower side, but it's higher than the previous options, so that's saying something! Mario vs. Donkey Kong did get a remake 2 years ago, but sometimes you can't beat the original, especially if Mario says "Come back here, you big-a monkey!" Mario Clash and Mario' Tennis are both on the Virtual Boy, so we finally get an opportunity to experience them again (or if you never had the console before, it'll be your first time)! Oh, and Mario Clash is WAY better than Clash of Clans. No microtransactions whatsoever.
Fifth place is right in the middle! Upcoming LEGO Super Mario sets grabs the spot with 123 votes, more than double the amount than the Nintendo Classics option! I never obtained any LEGO Super Mario myself, but I heard Mario finally looks more like himself than in the past. His weird blocky look was certainly strange! Jokes aside, one of the sets is a Mario Kart themed one, and who doesn't love karts? Children will love building with these new LEGO sets, especially if they feature small cars and Mario characters!
Just shy of the top three is I have no opinion. with 209 votes! Yeah.
The bronze medal goes to Yoshi and the Mysterious Book with 227 votes! Hey, that releases next month! A brand new Yoshi game with a new artstyle featuring a book called Mr. E, and it doesn't have the babies as far as I'm aware. At least you don't have to hear crying every time you take damage! Stay tuned for May 21 for the full release of the game! In the meantime, just chill and play something like the new Tomodachi Life.
We're almost there! Grabbing the silver with 263 votes is Super Mario Bros. Wonder - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park, one of the longest video game titles I've ever heard! This Nintendo Switch 2 update to the beloved Super Mario Bros. Wonder adds in the Koopalings as bosses and Rosalina as a playable character, plus many challenges and multiplayer minigames! Respect for our diligent Mario Wiki editors who have to go online to gather the information they need... we salute you! The only thing it's missing is Mick Wingert as the Talking Flowers, but still, there's plenty of fun to be had here!
Oh yes... we're now at the number one spot! With more than four times the amount of votes as the second place option (1,160 to be exact) it's... The Super Mario Galaxy Movie final trailer! The film is currently playing in theaters, but this short, final trailer further hyped us up for the film, plus we got to see the cast talking about their experiences with it! I'm pretty sure this is also where Donald Glover was announced as the voice of Yoshi, which was a welcome surprise to everyone. The Mario movies never cease to provide interesting casting choices!
So the "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie final trailer" option took up more than half of the total vote count! That's quite a feat, and it's only fitting that new games/updates to existing ones would follow behind. That was fun, but let's move on to the final main poll of the 15th Poll Committee, shall we?
Toad Houses throughout the mainline Super Mario games have different means of giving items to the players. Which one is your favorite? Sparks (talk), March 29, 2026)
Ever since Super Mario Bros. 3, Toad Houses in the overworld have provided us items and 1-Ups in various ways. This poll focuses on the item side of things, and I only now realize that Super Mario Bros. Wonder doesn't have any Toad House equivalent. Huh. Anyway, this poll received a total of 1,735 votes!
In dead last (10th place) it's Shuffling ? Blocks (New Super Mario Bros. U) with 58 votes! This is a simple game of shuffle where players must keep track of the ? Blocks containing the items while avoiding the ones with Bowser icons. I'm guessing it got last place because it's simple and that the other options are more interesting? Probably. You could also cheat with the Nintendo Switch's capture button, but you wouldn't do that right? Right?!
With 70 votes, Choosing from only one treasure chest (Super Mario Bros. 3) gets 9th place! One of two possible item minigames in Super Mario Bros. 3, this one has players opening a treasure chest and acquiring whatever's in it. Simple, but effective. No decision-making needed!
Taking 8th place is Roulette Block (New Super Mario Bros.) with 78 votes! In this manner, you can acquire basically any item you wish if you have good timing. It's about skill here, and you can be rewarded greatly! It's not decided at random too, but you could do it that way by closing your eyes to make it exciting!
Lucky 7th place is Remembering and transporting Baby Yoshis (New Super Mario Bros. U)! This option achieved 108 votes and is the most interesting minigame from Super Mario Bros. U. You have to keep track of three colored groups of Baby Yoshis and bring them to a Toad; one group has the items, one has the amount you win, and the other decides if you get them or not. Because of this, you can focus on making sure you get something if you prioritize that third group, or you could win two of the best available items but risk losing it all if you don't pay attention to the third! You also can't really cheat on this one, but it's pretty cool!
The last of the bottom half (6th place) is Selecting one of three available items (New Super Mario Bros. 2) with 120 votes! This was the option I voted for too! In this scenario, you're provided with three different items you can grab in any order. Because you see what you get, it's very reliable and doesn't rely on skill or luck. That's what collecting all those Star Coins rewards you with! Worth it.
Barely reaching the top 5 is Choosing a treasure chest when multiple are present (Super Mario Bros. 3), an oldie but a goodie! This option received 166 votes and proves that the original method is still a popular choice for the fans. You're to choose from one of three treasure chests, but you don't know what's in which! Whatever you get is added to your item inventory, so everybody wins! A little help goes a long way, said MC Ballyhoo, but that's still a relevant quote.
Time to check out the 4th place winner! If you're wondering, it's Guaranteed item from specific Toad Houses, like Super Star, Mega Mushroom, and Gold Flower (various), earning 188 votes! Some Toad Houses house (ha) specific items like the ones listed before this sentence. You'll always get whatever it is they're offering, so that alone makes them memorable and reliable! These also tend to focus on items exclusive to specific games, like the Gold Flower, so it's always nice to grab what is essentially the signature power-up of the game!
Earning the bronze medal is I have no opinion. with 209 votes! Once again... yeah.
Obtaining silver is Opening a present (Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World) with 231 votes! Both of these games essentially have the same gimmick, but they are kinda different from each other. Super Mario 3D Land's is similar to the "one treasure chest" from Super Mario Bros. 3, but Super Mario 3D World's has two presents to choose from: one is small, while the other is large. One has only a Mushroom, while the other has four unique items. You may think the large present has multiple inside it right? That's not always the case! It's a game of chance because any of the presents can have the item bundle! You'll either find happiness... or disappointment.
The top spot with 507 votes goes to Memory Match (New Super Mario Bros. Wii)! It's one of the most popular 2D Mario games, so that definitely helped it get the gold. What it also offers is the opportunity to walk away with a variety of special items you can use whatever you want, after playing an exciting and suspenseful game of Memory Match! Players flip over panels to see what they have. If two identical panels are flipped, then you'll get whatever item is shown on them! Beware however, because if you match the Bowser or Bowser Jr. icons, the game ends! If you play with other people, you take turns flipping the panels. If they turn over two of the bad ones, you can blame them for losing the game! Actually, don't do that. Please try to keep your relationships with friends and family members healthy, OK?
Overall, this poll was more balanced than the Mar10 one. There was still a clear winner, but it didn't dominate the poll. At least the other options had a chance!
Super Mario Galaxy features a diverse cast of characters from all across the galaxy. Which one is your favorite? (Waluigi Time (talk), April 1, 2026)
Our final poll is an April Fool's one thought up by Waluigi Time (talk)! For those who don't know, the Mario Wiki did a spinoff of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie titled Toad. This poll focuses on the characters from Super Mario Galaxy, although they never appear in the game. That's the joke! This poll only received 665 votes, which is good for a one-day only poll. I don't really have anything to say about these options other than a funny sentence or two about each of them.
- 9th place:Baby Luigi (17 votes) - The younger brother of Baby Mario. Cries just as much as his adult self!
- 8th place:Baby Mario (34 votes) - The older brother of Baby Luigi. Has exactly twice as many votes as his younger siblings, proving that he's always number one (I guess?)!
- A three-way tie for 5th place:Chef Toad, Clawgrip, and Mouser (38 votes each) - Two of these characters originated from Super Mario Bros. 2, but one doesn't!
- 4th place:Birdo (50 votes) - Also from Super Mario Bros. 2, but more popular than the previous options by 12 votes!
- 3rd place:Wart (106 votes) - Once again from Super Mario Bros. 2, but the most popular of the, all! Owns a casino for whatever reason.
- 2nd place:R.O.B. (109 votes) - This robot's well known for being in the Super Smash Bros. games! He's in second place because someone overrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrtook him in the rankings.
- 1st place:Fox McCloud (235 votes) - This "Mario" character helps team Star Fox defeat the evil Andross! His cameo made him the fan-favorite!
Short but sweet, just like an April Fool's joke!
And now... is the end of Poll Committee Discussion. Oh, I'll miss all of you! But don't worry - someone will write this section for May's issue! Who will do it I don't know, but it's something to look forward to! Goodbye everyone!
The 'Shroom Report
Written by: Waluigi Time (talk)
Hello there, 'Shroom readers! Well, this is a little awkward. With the release of Issue 227 back in February, The 'Shroom reached the milestone of 10,000 total sections! You'd think that would be the kind of thing that would be covered in The 'Shroom Report, especially if you've ever opened that collapsible box down below, but, uh, well... whoops! Just don't worry about it, okay? What's important is that after all these years, this volunteer project is still kicking and dare I say more robust than ever. Thank you for being here, whether you've contributed directly or just been a casual reader! Anywho, here's the stats for Issue 228, and thanks to MightyMario for maintaining our spreadsheets, which are pretty nice when Google Sheets isn't actively trying to unravel itself. Happens more than you'd think.
For new readers or anyone needing a refresher, please open the box below.
Categories that are not applicable this month are crossed out.
