The 'Shroom:Issue 229/Fun Stuff
Director's Notes
Greetings, beautiful 'Shroom readers! Welcome into a blistery April. I don't know about you all, but where I live, every single day of spring has been three separate seasons rolled into one. Do you wear a coat, or a light flannel and hope it doesn't start hailing on you? This exact scenario happened to me two days ago. I highly recommend going with the former.
Thankfully, even if things are tumultuous out there, it's nice and comfy in Fun Stuff, in no small part because of how full our line-up is! Three new full-time sections are in swing this month: Sentient freedom (talk) returns with his Riddle Moves, an opportunity to test your knowledge of various Pokémon moves; Goombuigi (talk) brings back the fan-favorite Picross, with some truly remarkable visual stylings to match; and Superchao (talk) introduces a brand new section, Homicide Activity, where you, the reader, get to stage a discrete assassination a la the Hitman games. I especially recommend you check it out, as it's been a long time since Fun Stuff has had a section with direct user participation.
Alongside our fresh batch, our other beloved standards are here, so I shouldn't keep you any longer. There's so much stuff! It's all so fun! Enjoy, and we'll see you back here in May for a very special issue.
Section of the Month
Congratulations to Waluigi Time (talk) and Ninja Squid (talk) for a joint first place result! Extra kudos, of course, to Sparks (talk) and FunkyK38 (talk) for their own secured spots on the leaderboard. Have any special favorites this month? Be sure to vote, or give them a shout in Poochy's Picks!

Homicide Activity
Hello, 'Shroom readers! Haven't said that in a while, huh? Well, it's ya boy Superchao, back at it again at the 'Shroom. I'm debuting my new section Homicide Activity.
Homicide Activity is best thought of as a cross between a single-player version of the forum game known as Killing Game and a forum game version of the Hitman series of games. Each month, your fabulous host (that's me!) presents a framework where you send in a single attempt to kill a designated target without getting caught in the middle of it. One week before the next issue, I lock attempts; then, next issue contains the attempts and a new scenario. You, the readers, can vote on which one is the best, and we'll present the winner in the issue after that!
Ground rules are as follows:
- You can't kill anyone except the target. NPCs can be removed in nonlethal ways if you can set it up, which leads into point 2...
- Illegal activity getting spotted, such as attacking people in plain view or stealing things it's suspicious to pick up, causes the attempt to fail!
- Clarifying questions are welcome and encouraged, and should be asked in the relevant forum thread. Attempts should be PMed directly to me on the forum.
An example scenario would look like this:
Host: You are in a kitchen, here to kill the head chef. He's currently making the centerpiece for the upcoming brunch, while a sous-chef runs around moving food from place to place and a waiter enters on a regular basis. How do you kill the head chef?
Player 1: Do I have a knife? How often does the waiter show up?
Player 2: What's in the centerpiece? Is the head chef allergic to anything?
Host: You have a knife, the waiter shows up every five minutes or so, the centerpiece is a huge pork roast, and the head chef is allergic to peanuts.
Player 1: I tell the sous-chef the waiter insulted him, wait for the waiter to show up, and then tell him that the sous-chef said some unflattering things about him. When the waiter goes to challenge the chef, I make sure to back them both up and convince them to settle it outside. When they're gone, I take my knife and stab the head chef, before cleaning up the mess and propping him at the counter so people think he's alive for a while, then I leave.
Player 2: I grab some peanuts and crush them. When the waiter is gone, I tell the sous-chef to ask the head chef something for me, and when they're both busy I press the crushed peanuts into the pork, and use gravy to hide the nuts. Then I take the chance to pickpocket the head chef's epipen, and leave, waiting for him to eat the nuts when he samples the pork and have his fatal allergic reaction.
And that's about the size of it!
Here's our scenario for the first month:
You are in the second car of a train, with your target the businessman in the fifth and last car. It's late at night, so there's not that many people, but there are still several on board who are awake. The awake passengers are spread through the second, third, and fifth cars, and the fourth car is a dining car with a few staff members cleaning up. How do you commit your Homicide here?
Feel free to ask whatever questions you might have. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Anagrams
Written by: BBQ Turtle (talk)
Hi everyone, welcome to the April edition of Anagrams! As I'm sure you're aware, if you're here, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie came out earlier this month- but don't worry, I won't spoil it for you- but I am going to use it as inspiration for the month's anagrams theme. You don't need to have seen it though- it's all about other place from space from throughout the series (plus a couple that are particularly space-themed to cover all of my bases). If you want to keep the spoilers away for even longer though, you could suggest a theme for next month on my talk page or in a PM to me on the forums- or any Mario-related anagrams you can see no way of me working into that theme. (Seriously though, I will give it a fair bit of time before I make any anagrams set based on the film). OK, time to let the anagrams be the star of the show, I'll be over the moon if you can solve these!
How it works...
Basically, this puzzle consists of solving the anagrams. Each month has a specific theme, which will give you a clue about what sort of words or phrases the anagrams will be. I've also included the boxes that the anagrams will fit into, so you'll be able to tell how many words it will solve to be and how many letters will be in each word, which should give you a hand too. You'll also notice that within each set of boxes, one of the squares is a ? Block. As you solve each anagram, note down the letter which appear on the ? Blocks, and if you can solve all of the anagrams, you'll also get a bonus anagram to solve from completing all of the others. I've included the letter configuration for this one at the bottom too, just to give you an extra helping hand. Best of luck!
1. A BROWN RADIO
2. BOW POD STRAWBERRIES
3. DART COOKER
4. TOMB RECOVERY OATS

8. IRIS ROD ALLOWANCES
9. RETRANSLATE

Welcome to another peaceful day of life here in the Fun Stuff section of The 'Shroom island. Nothing to worry about, just living the dream... But what's this? Why, it's another edition of Crosswords, presented by Mii, MarioMorty! That's right, we've got a puzzle about Miis and their use in the Mario franchise, as well as some general Mii trivia, something Wii can all enjoy. Well, that's about all the puns I can muster up, and all of them that U can handle (now that's really it). Until next time, and keep living your dream!
Hello, ‘Shroom readers, and welcome to Picross! Those of you who have been around long enough may remember when I used to do this section back from 2020 to 2022 (gosh, that feels like so long ago…), and I figured I’d return to my roots. It’s also been six years since I first started that section, so now feels like as good of a time as any for it to return. The last time I wrote Picross was in Issue 185, and so I’ve updated a few things since then.
Firstly, in 2022, I started making picrosses in the style of the Mario's Picross series, specifically Mario's Picross, Mario's Super Picross, and Picross 2. I'll continue doing them in this style, however I’ve redone the templates, as it’s been a few years. I’ll only be using the style of the first Mario's Picross to start with, and I plan on doing picrosses in the style of Mario's Super Picross and Picross 2 later down the road.
In other news, I also made a new “how to play” section. My old one from Issue 157 is pretty dated, so a new collapsible one will be included in every edition I write going forward, for any new readers. The best practice, though, is to try some yourself! Mario's Picross and Mario's Super Picross are available to play on Nintendo Switch Online via Nintendo Classics, so if you’ve never played picross before, I’d recommend giving these games a go. If you have - great! Then you can jump right in.
Since The Super Mario Galaxy Movie came out recently, these picrosses will be themed around that. As of writing, I saw the movie about a week ago, and I quite enjoyed it despite its critical reception.
For anyone who isn’t already familiar with picross, here’s a tutorial on how to play:
Let’s use this 5x5 picross as an example, and I’ll show my process of solving it step by step, explaining my rationale for every step as I go along.
The obvious first move here is to fill the middle row, denoted with the number “5”. Since this is a 5x5 grid, filling five squares of any row or column would fill every square in the row. (As a general tip, the first move you’ll want to do when solving any picross is to look for rows and columns with the number of columns or rows of the grid, or any rows / columns with a “0” (as that means no squares are filled in).
There are several moves that we can do next, but the one I chose to do next is as pictured above. The second-to-left column has the numbers “1 3”. Each number denoted the number of consecutive squares filled, with there being at least 1 blank square between them. So, using quick math, we can deduce that 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 3 filled squares = 5 squares. Thus, we can confidently fill in the full column.
We can repeat the same for the second-to-right column.
We can apply the same logic to the middle column, i.e. 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square = 5 squares.
Alternatively, since the bottom row has two filled squares with a blank square between them, and is denoted with the number “3”, then that means that there must be three consecutive squares. Thus, the square in between must be filled. The same logic can be applied to the top row.
Next, let’s take a look at the rows. Both the top and bottom rows are now complete, so the rest of the squares in each row can be marked as blank. The same goes for the second-to-bottom row.
We’re almost done now! Let’s take a look at the second-to-top row, which has two unmarked squares. Since the row is denoted as “1 1”, that means there are two single squares with one or more blank squares between them. There are only two unmarked squares here, so these must be filled.
And voilà! We’ve solved the picross and have been rewarded with a mushroom!
Hopefully, this tutorial was helpful. If you’re still a bit confused, the best practice is to actually solve picrosses on your own! A lot of the tips and tricks I showed here come down to intuition and practice. There are more advanced ones, but I’ll leave you to discover those on your own. Here’s just a few strategies you’ll want to keep in mind when solving picrosses:
- Start by filling in numbers corresponding to the amount of rows or columns (or zeroes). For example, for a 10x10 picross, this would not only count rows / columns marked with “10”, but also ones marked with, say, “4 5” or “2 3 3”. This is because you have to account for the blank space of at least one square, and with quick math (4 filled squares + 1 blank + 5 filled = 10; 2 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled = 10), you can deduce the specific square that you should and shouldn’t fill in.
- Always stick to steps that you are 100% certain of. Every strategy I’ve shown in my example is based on elimination and finding squares which I could fill in for certain. Although it may be tempting to take a chance, it could end up being a mistake, and without a mistake-checker of some sort, it can be difficult to figure out where it is, and you might even have to restart.
- Use process of elimination to determine squares which can 100% be filled in. If there’s a certain row whose numbers don’t quite add up to the number of rows or columns, but are pretty close; or you have a lot of crossed out spaces in that row or column, identify every possible solution to that row or column, and determine if there are any filled / unfilled squares in common between all of them. If so, you can 100% fill those in.
- Lastly, while there can be multiple ways to solve a picross, each picross has only one solution. Each of the ways you can solve a picross leads to the same solution. You can try the example picross on your own and experiment with different steps, but you’ll find that the end result is the same.
I hope those tips proved helpful! As I mentioned before, though, the best way to improve is to play some picrosses on your own. Mario's Picross and Mario's Super Picross are a great place to start, and there are numerous other picross games and websites that you can find with a quick Google search.
Lastly, if you want to solve the picrosses from this section, all you need to do is download the images. You can either open them in your image editing program of choice, or you can print them out and solve them with pen and paper. Happy solving!

I sincerely hope you enjoyed this edition of Picross! I’m happy to be back writing the section, and I’ll be back next month for more picrosses. See you then!
Hiding Koopa
Written by: Waluigi Time (talk)
You guys... It's here... Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream real... I'm guessing if you're reading this right now, you're not playing it, so might as well play the latest edition of Hiding Koopa as long as you're here! As usual, five Koopas are hidden in this artwork from the game. Good luck!
Thanks for playing! Did you find them all?
Pixel Personas
Happy late Easter! For any kids reading this, I hope you had fun finding Easter Eggs and eating candy! Pixel Personas will hopefully bring you more exciting Easter joy.
New to Pixel Personas? Here's what it's about: Pixel Personas is a game played in three rounds. In each round, I'll show an image of a Super Mario character (this includes enemies), but they're all pixelated! You (the readers) must analyze and identify who these characters are. Each round is tougher than the last, with more lesser-known characters and larger pixels, making it more difficult to tell who it is. After you make your guess, click/tap onhover over the card the image is on to flip it over and reveal the character!
The theme for April is eggs! These characters that relate to eggs in some way are scrambled in pixels. Ready to find out who they truly are? You may begin!
Round 1
Round 2
Round 3
Aha! You've figured out who these egg-cellent individuals are. Thanks for playing, and see you in May!
Riddle Moves
Written by: Sentient freedom (talk)
Hello 'Shroom readers, yes that's right, I have returned after an unexpected absence and it seems like a lot happened when I was gone. Including the announcement of Gen 10, with three all new starters! People all seem to be going crazy for Pombon but, I think if given the choice, I'm choosing Gecqua because it just looks amazing. But anyway, let's actually focus on what you wanted, and that is riddles, so let's do it.
How it works:
Below will be a riddle relating to a random Pokémon move; the chosen move will not be a Z-Move, a Max move, any of the moves that are exclusive to the Starmobiles, or any of the two Tera moves. What you have to do is use the information provided by the riddle to piece together what the move may be. I will tell you the move's type, so you can think about it a bit more. Anyway, enough talking! Here's the riddle, let's see how sharp your knowledge is!
Type: Fighting
"I face and pummel the target head-on with no letup. Doing this makes me frail, but the great power makes me strong, what am I?
I mean come on, you have seen at least one person use this move in VGC.
It has a less popular cousin, with the same type and base power.
It has this neat little term called "Infight"
Close Combat
So, how did you do? Did you manage to get it right? Well, regardless, thanks for playing, and I will see you next month to test your move knowledge again.
Hello and welcome to the April issue of Hex Puzzle! Let's get started!
4D 61 72 69 6F 20 61 6E 64 20 4C 75 69 67 69 is "Mario and Luigi" or 53 6F 6E 69 63 20 61 6E 64 20 54 61 69 6C 73 is "Sonic and Tails". With these together, you can guess that 4D is a capital M.

Hiiii!!!!!!!, and my Name is Hatsune Miku, all you know me 100% already!, And i Thinking We Needing an Article About Me in This Wiki About Mario Himself?!, (From My April Fool's Proposal)
Did you decode the texts for April? As always, thanks for playing!! And maybe see you all for the next Fun Stuff issue!
Where in the Marioverse is Carmen Sandiego?
Each issue, you will be given a case to solve and clues to use to help you find the solution! Use your Mario knowledge to crack the case!
You will begin each case at the scene of the crime, and you will be given three clues from passerby as to where the next hot spot is and what game it’s from. Using your knowledge of Mario games and the Super Mario Wiki, figure out where the crook is and go track them down! There are four locations each round: the crime scene (1) at the start, two locations (2 and 3) with clues, and the hideout for the crook of the month (4). Answers for locations will be given with the corresponding round, for example, the clues from the crime scene will lead you to location 2, and once you open the spoiler bubbles for location 2, you will be given the correct answer. You can open the clues for each location in any order you’d like, but be careful! You may encounter an incorrect clue that could throw you off the case!
Clues offered will give you a hint either about the next location or the game it’s in. Unlike a regular Carmen Sandiego game, you do not have to collect information about the crook you are tracking down.
Challenge round (optional):
-Find all locations and games correctly in two minutes or less
-Find all locations and games correctly without using the rest of the Wiki for help
"A new case has landed on your desk, gumshoe, and we've got Power-Up problems once again! I'm sure you know that Super Mario Bros. Wonder- Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup at Bellabel Park recently arrived. The updated version of the game featured new playable characters such as Rosalina and Captain Toad, and a new Power-Up- the Super Flower Pot. Drawing on the powers of the Flower Kingdom, Mario and co. can summon flowers for attacks, use leaves to get a little extra distance on jumps, and carry water in their flower petals. It seems like the denizens of the Flower Kingdom are not the only ones who love flowers, however, as one of Carmen's agents has swiped a massive supply of the Super Flower Pots. Whether Carmen wants to sell them on the black market or if she really wants to get her garden up and running quickly, we can't let her get away with this brazen theft! Mario has requested your help with this job so the crew can get back to stopping the Koopalings and meeting up in Bellabel Park. Let's get to work, gumshoe!"

HIDEOUT ANSWER:
Cheese Land from Mario Kart: Super Circuit
"Superb work, gumshoe! We followed your notes to Cheese Land, where we found Carmen's operative arguing with the Mousers in the area over the Super Flower Pots. Seems like they'd taken a fancy to them. Unfortunately, the operative saw us coming and ran for the fromage hills, leaving the pots behind and getting away from the agents. We gave chase, but we weren't able to apprehend them. Don't let that disappointment ruin a job well-done, though, because you did retrieve the Super Flower Pots before they could be passed on to Carmen! Mario was on the scene with us, and a little persuasion form him was enough to convince the Mousers to hand them over. He sure knows what he's doing! He's sent your retainer fee in, and we've deposited it already for you. He also sent ahead a lovely plant that the other members of the group cultivated for you from the Flower Kingdom. We've placed it on your desk- be sure to review the care instructions to keep it happy and healthy! One more case wrapped up, gumshoe, and it's time to return to HQ to write up your report. Keep your eyes and ears open for your next case!"
