Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land (Japanese: スーパーマリオワールド マリオとヨッシーの冒険ランド Sūpā Mario Wārudo Mario to Yosshī no Bōken Rando), or Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi's Adventure Land, is a 28-minute interactive anime video based on the game Super Mario World published by Bandai in 1991. It is designed for use with Bandai's Terebikko system, which utilizes a telephone-shaped microphone to "interact" with the video. It asks the viewer multiple choice questions, and prompts the user to answer by pressing one of four numbered buttons. Although made for use with the Terebikko system, the video can also be played on an ordinary VHS player.

Mario Luigi and Yoshi soon come across a Ghost House, and Luigi and Yoshi are paralyzed with fear when an unseen voice speaks to them. The fearless Mario urges them to push on, however, and they all enter the house. Once inside, they are stalked by Boo Buddy Blocks. Upon arriving in Vanilla Dome the group finds themselves stuck, with a lava river blocking their way. They soon spot three switches, yellow, green and red, however, it's revealed a Magikoopa created two fake switches in an attempt to stop the trio from continuing. The Magikoopa, alongside Lemmy, watches from the other side as Mario calls the viewer and shows them a diagram of colored blocks forming a bridge across the lava, corresponding to the colors of the switches. He asks which switch, based on the order of the blocks, would make blocks appear in such a way as to allow them to cross the lava. After hitting the correct switch, the blocks appear and Mario runs across lava. The Magikoopa flies away, but Mario beats Lemmy up and sends him flying, dropping another egg. The group takes the egg to Twin Bridges, where it hatches into a red Baby Yoshi.

The Baby Yoshi, eager to join the trio, runs ahead and eats some Koopa Paratroopas, growing into a full grown Red Yoshi immediately after. Now joined by Red Yoshi, the group moves onward. After overhearing some Galoombas talk about a secret block, Luigi finds it and hits it, causing a Beanstalk to grow. Climbing up, they discover a Coin Heaven. Yoshi then calls the viewer and shows Mario and Luigi on different paths, with different coin amounts and groups. He asks the viewer who will collect more coins: Mario or Luigi.

After collecting all the coins, the brothers count the ones they grabbed, with Luigi grabbing ten coins and Mario grabbing eight, much to his disappointment. Mario and Luigi then mount Yoshi and Red Yoshi, and the two Yoshis leap down from the Coin Haven, falling directly into the Forest of Illusion.

Forest of Illusion
The group crashes in the Forest of Illusion surrounded by trees with sinister faces, who laugh and give them contradictory directions. Not knowing where the exit is, the group resorts to finding the exit themselves. Before continuing, a Wiggler suddenly pops out of a flower patch and offers Luigi help. The Wiggler then holds up half a fruit and promises to help Luigi if he could give them another fruit like the one they were holding. Luigi calls the viewer to ask what the fruit is, showing them some strawberries, a melon, an apple and two tomatoes. The answer is revealed to be the apple, which Luigi then gives to the Wiggler. Wiggler then tells him that the forest is full of trees who always lie, except for a single tree with red flowers and yellow fruit, that always tells the truth. Mario then proceeds to call the viewer and ask them to identify which of the three trees is the one they're looking for. The friendly tree then tells them that, in order to exit the forest, they need to jump into the nearby lake. The group proceeds to dive underwater and continue their journey towards Chocolate Island.

Mario then calls the viewer and asks them to identify the real Wendy. After having her plan thwarted, Wendy angrily charges forward and Mario dodges, leaving her clinging to the edge of the platform, above lava. The other Koopalings then attack, but Mario is unable to defeat them. Red Yoshi hits a block and finds a Cape Feather, which Mario uses to knock the Koopalings away. The heroes then discover a hoard of Yoshi eggs in the fortress.

The rescued eggs are then taken outside the fortress, where the Yoshis trapped inside them are freed. At first the explosives don't detonate, and Mario asks Luigi to take a closer look. But soon after, the explosives detonate, catching Luigi in the blast zone, which amuses Mario and the Yoshis. Angry at this, Luigi runs away crying.

Yoshi, however, sneezes, catching the guard's attention. Meanwhile, Red Yoshi convinces Luigi to join them. Back on the ship, two Dry Bones toss the captured Mario and Yoshi down a hole, who then fall unconscious. Upon regaining his consciousness, Mario finds himself inside Bowser's Castle, which has been redecorated by Bowser for Princess Peach, who is being held in a cage hanging from the ceiling. From his Koopa Clown Car, Bowser sends forward an army of Mechakoopas but suddenly, Luigi and Red Yoshi burst through the door. Luigi then throws Mario a mushroom, which Mario uses to power himself up, and the two brothers start fighting Bowser. They stomp Mechakoopas and kick them at him, but Bowser always manages to dodge them. Mario asks the viewer where they should aim at, as Bowser rapidly moves up and down the screen. Like the keyholes question asked inside the Ghost House, there is no way to tell which option is correct. Regardless, Mario and Luigi manage to hit Bowser in the face, sending him spinning out of control, defeated.

Story

Introduction

Postcard featuring a photo of Princess Peach and Yoshi in Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land.

In the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and Luigi receive a postcard from Princess Peach, inviting them to join her in Dinosaur Land. The brothers then board an airplane to visit them. While on the plane, Mario tests out the Terebikko phone Luigi brought to call the viewer watching. When the plane lands on Yoshi's Island, however, they find an empty airport and are suddenly interrupted by King Koopa appearing through stormy clouds in the sky. He announces he has taken Princess Peach captive and challenges the brothers to go to his castle, before disappearing. Mario and Luigi then set out, determined to rescue her.

Iggy and his minions block the way.

On Yoshi's Island, Mario and Luigi quickly run out of breath as they hurry towards King Koopa's castle. While looking for a Super Mushroom, Luigi hits a block, and an egg comes out, much to the brothers' surprise. Luigi calls the viewer, and a green tail cracks out of the egg. Luigi then asks the viewer what will hatch from the egg: A Yoshi, a Koopa Troopa, a Cheep Cheep or a Rex. Yoshi then hatches from the egg and reveals he was sealed inside it after attempting to rescue his friends from King Koopa. The three of them then team up and continue onward. Upon reaching the bridge to Donut Plains, a horde of Koopa Troopas, Rexes, and Chargin' Chucks suddenly appears to block their way, led by Iggy. Mario then asks the viewer which group contains the most enemies: Four Chargin' Chucks, Six Koopa Troopas or Five Rexes.

Afterwards, Mario, Luigi and Yoshi each beat up the groups of Chargin' Chucks, Koopa Troopas and Rexes, respectively. Iggy summons some Koopa Paratroopas and Monty Moles, but Yoshi quickly takes care of them by eating a Green Shell and breathing fire on them. Iggy flees, leaving behind another egg, which hatches into an injured Yellow Yoshi. After getting information from the Yoshi regarding the Boos' weakness, the heroes cross the bridge into Donut Plains.

Donut Plains

Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and many Boos inside a Ghost House in Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land.
Mario, Luigi and Yoshi are swarmed by Boos

Mario Luigi and Yoshi soon come across a Ghost House, and Luigi and Yoshi are paralyzed with fear when an unseen voice speaks to them. The fearless Mario urges them to push on, however, and they all enter the house. Once inside, they are stalked by Boo Buddy Blocks. Eventually, he turns fast enough to see them and screams, and the Boos start swarming the group. Mario asks the viewer what item they should use to repel the Boos: A candle, a mushroom, a flower or a Coin.

Mario then uses the candle and scares away the Boos. One of them drops a key, which Luigi retrieves. Mario finds many keyholes on the wall, however, so Luigi calls the viewer to ask which keyhole to use, then explains the correct answer might not be the same each time. Mario then inserts the key into the correct keyhole, causing it to expand into a large exit for Mario, Luigi and Yoshi, who move onward to Vanilla Dome.

Which switch will allow the trio to cross the lava river?
Mario asks the viewer which switch should be pressed in order to cross the river.

Vanilla Dome

Upon arriving in Vanilla Dome the group finds themselves stuck, with a lava river blocking their way. They soon spot three switches, yellow, green and red, however, it is revealed a Magikoopa created two fake switches in an attempt to stop the trio from continuing. The group takes the egg to Twin Bridges, where it hatches into a red Mini-Yoshi.

Who will grab more coins: Mario or Luigi?
Mario takes the upper path while Luigi takes the lower path

The Mini-Yoshi, eager to join the trio, runs ahead and eats some Koopa Paratroopas, growing into a full grown Red Yoshi immediately after. Now joined by Red Yoshi, the group moves onward. After overhearing some Goombas talk about a secret block, Luigi finds it and hits it, causing a Beanstalk to grow.

Mario and Luigi then mount Yoshi and Red Yoshi, and the two Yoshis leap down from the Coin Heaven, falling directly into the Forest of Illusion.

Mario then proceeds to call the viewer and ask them to identify which of the three trees is the one they are looking for. The friendly tree then tells them that, in order to exit the forest, they need to jump into the nearby lake. The group proceeds to dive underwater and continue their journey towards Chocolate Island.

The remaining Koopalings charge towards the heroes.

Upon reaching Chocolate Island, the heroes reach Wendy's castle. Once inside, they find themselves surrounded by many traps such as spikes, skewers and grinders. After the spiked ceiling starts moving downwards, the viewer is asked which gap in the floor the group will be safe in. After this close call, the group makes it to the end of the castle, where they find Larry, Ludwig, Wendy, Roy, and Morton waiting for them. Larry, Ludwig, Roy, and Morton step aside as Wendy steps forward and creates three fake copies of herself.

Yoshi then sets up explosives to the castle, but accidentally mixes up the wires with three other plungers and does not know which one to press. Mario calls the viewer to ask which plunger to activate. At first, the explosives do not detonate, and Mario asks Luigi to take a closer look. Soon after, however, the explosives detonate, catching Luigi in the blast zone, which amuses Mario and the Yoshis. Angry at this, Luigi runs away crying.

Without Luigi, Mario and Yoshi continue onward, towards the Sunken Ghost Ship, while Red Yoshi stays behind. On the Sunken Ghost Ship, Mario and Yoshi attempt to sneak past a Dry Bones. Yoshi, however, sneezes, catching the guard's attention. Meanwhile, Red Yoshi convinces Luigi to help them. Back on the ship, two Dry Bones toss the captured Mario and Yoshi down a hole, where they fall unconscious. Upon regaining his consciousness, Mario finds himself inside King Koopa's castle, which has been redecorated by King Koopa for Princess Peach, who is being held in a cage hanging from the ceiling. From his Koopa Clown Car, King Koopa sends forward an army of Mechakoopas but suddenly, Luigi and Red Yoshi burst through the door. Luigi then throws Mario a mushroom, which Mario uses to power himself up, and the two brothers start fighting King Koopa. They stomp Mechakoopas and kick them at him, but King Koopa always manages to dodge them. Mario asks the viewer where they should aim at, as King Koopa rapidly moves up and down the screen. Like the keyholes question asked inside the Ghost House, there is no way to tell which option is correct. Regardless, Mario and Luigi manage to hit King Koopa in the face, sending him spinning out of control, defeated.

Answer to File:SMWMAYAL Question 2.png, incorrectly displaying Monty Moles instead of Chargin' Chucks.
Monty Moles are erroneously shown instead of Chargin' Chucks

Notable errors

 • At one point during the film, Yoshi eats a Green Shell, causing him to spit out fire. In Super Mario World, Green Shells do not give Yoshi any abilities. Instead, Red Shells make him spit fire.
 • After asking the viewer to identify which group contains more enemies, Mario is shown jumping on Monty Moles instead of the Chargin' Chucks shown in the scenes prior.
 • During the Koopaling fight inside Wendy's castle, Lemmy is shown instead of Larry for one scene.
