The Tail Flick is a move that made its debut in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. The move is performed by pressing , which causes Yoshi to spin around and interact with creatures or other interactable objects nearby.

If this move is performed next to a creature, such as a Crazee Dayzee, then the creature will be picked up and carried by Yoshi on its back. Not every creature can be picked up however, and not every creature will sit on Yoshi's back, some creatures will be held instead. Larger creatures won't be picked up, such as the Hauger, and creatures such as the Mawstalk will be held instead.

Generally speaking, using the Tail Flick move on a creature will unlock a discovery for it. The move can also be used with objects, such as picking up apples, as well as knocking them down from trees. If Yoshi uses the Tail Flick move next to a creature or object whilst already having one on his back, the two will swap, and the one on Yoshi's back will be flung off – this also occurs if the move is just used when Yoshi is carrying something with nothing nearby. If is held up and the move is used, the creature or object on Yoshi's back will be thrown up vertically instead, and if is held down instead, the creature or object will be placed down instead.
