"1-Up"[1] is a brief six-note musical fanfare composed for Super Mario Bros. by Koji Kondo. It consists of the notes e g E C D G, which play whenever the player collects a 1-Up Mushroom or receives an extra life another way.

Super Mario Bros. marks the first appearance of "1-Up". It is also featured in the Super Mario World album.
Super Mario World / Super Mario All-Stars / Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World[edit]
Super Mario World, alongside Super Mario All-Stars and its rerelease Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World, has an arrangement of "1-Up". It is also featured in the game's official soundtrack.

New Super Mario Bros. series[edit]
In New Super Mario Bros., a repeating arrangement of "1-Up" is incorporated into "Minigames: Vs. Battle - Final Results", the theme that plays on the results and total points screen after completing a Vs. Battle minigame. An arrangement of "1-Up" is also incorporated into "Minigames: Game Explanation".

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
In Super Mario 3D Land, a unique arrangement of "1-Up" with orchestra hits plays when Mario or Luigi gains their 1,000th or 1,110th extra life.[4]

Unique arrangements of "1-Up" play whenever the player gains a 1-Up that is not applied to their life counter instantly. These sound effects are named "NoUp" internally and are used in the 10 Mario Challenge and 100 Mario Challenge game modes in Super Mario Maker, and in the Endless Challenge game mode in Super Mario Maker 2.
In Super Mario Maker, an arrangement plays upon booting up the game. This arrangement is reused when clearing a level with the Builder Mario amiibo costume.
In Super Mario Maker 2, an arrangement plays whenever a player receives a notification pop-up in Course World. Additionally, the "NoUp" sound effect in the New Super Mario Bros. U theme was removed and replaced with a generic item collection sound effect.

Super Mario Run[edit]
In Super Mario Run, performing various actions such as obtaining a Bubble or revealing a hidden color coin will cause an arrangement of the last four notes of "1-Up" to be played.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
In Super Mario Odyssey, as an Easter egg, the pause and unpause sound effects form an arrangement of "1-Up" when played in sequence.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Each game in the Mario & Luigi series plays an arrangement of "1-Up" in battles when a downed character is revived. Reviving a character is usually done through the use of a 1-Up Mushroom or 1-Up DX item.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga features multiple arrangements of "1-Up".
- Reviving a downed character in battle will play an arrangement of "1-Up".
- Obtaining a key item, a gear item from a character, or Hee Beans after playing a minigame will play a fanfare that is an additional arrangement of "1-Up".
- Getting a 'GREAT' rating when executing an attack will play a sped-up version of "1-Up" in C# major.
- In the remake, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, a different sound that does not feature "1-Up" plays when getting Great and Excellent ratings.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]
In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, an arrangement of "1-Up" plays when a downed character is revived in battle. This arrangement of "1-Up" also plays when a 1-Up Mushroom or 1-Up Super is obtained from a block in the field; this is the only game in the Mario & Luigi series to play "1-Up" alongside obtaining a 1-Up Mushroom from a block. Like in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, getting a 'GREAT' rating when executing an attack will play a sped-up additional arrangement of "1-Up".

Animal Crossing series[edit]
In Animal Crossing: City Folk and Animal Crossing: New Leaf, "1-Up" plays when interacting with the 1-Up Mushroom furniture item.[5][6] In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it returns for this purpose, but also plays as an Easter egg if the player's villager strikes a rock a few times.[7]
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
An dramatic, orchestral arrangement of "1-Up" scored by Brian Tyler plays in The Super Mario Bros. Movie as Donkey Kong saves Luigi's life by stopping the winch from lowering Luigi's cage into lava. In the soundtrack, this arrangement plays 2 minutes and 52 seconds into "Fighting Tooth and Veil".
