Title[edit]
Is the title of this article conjectural? Or is it actually called this somewhere in-game or in a manual. Garlic Man (talk)
- It's not even mentioned in both the game and the manual. It's conjectural.
Supermariofan14
- Does this even deserve an article? Hello, I'm Time Turner.
- You could call it Tephra, which means volcanic rock...
- good then put on a conjectural template. A Link to the Present 15:46, 17 February 2011 (EST)
- How about "Meteors". The name was featured in the first level in Peach's Castle and it definately sounds better than Raining Debris. Zuper Zaloster (talk)
- Except "meteors" apply to space rocks that have entered a planet, not pyroclastic matter. The name we have at this moment is clunky, however. Unless this "meteor" name has made more appearances than just this level, we don't use it.
It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 22:40, 17 December 2013 (EST)
- Another alternative is "Firefall" (the name is mentioned in both New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U). I (of course) ain't sure if it's official, but that's all I got. Zuper Zaloster (talk)

Hey[edit]
I know that this is a random Question but, Debris is always pronounced with a silent "S", right?
— The preceding unsigned comment was added by IGGY7735 (talk).
- I think so, but you should look it up if you really want to know. Don't put the pronunciation on the article (if that's why you're asking): we don't do that on this wiki. - Walkazo 20:15, 11 February 2011 (EST)

- The New Super Mario Bros. U Prima guide uses the name "Bowser's Flames", though there's a clear distinction between the New Super Mario Bros. U ones that are fireballs and the falling rocks seen in every other game, even if they have the same general purpose.:-Toa 95 (talk)

Meteor, the official name?[edit]
In the article, it say - In Paper Mario: Sticker Star they are known as meteors. I put template for reference. It make me remember also that the first level of Peach's Castle in New Super Mario Bros. U was name Meteor Moat. Maybe meteor is the official name?--
(TALK) 06:52, 15 May 2015 (EDT)
- Meteor Moat certainly adds credence to the idea that Meteor is the official name. Even if we don't have a quote handy at the moment (I'm sure Kersti or another NPC mentions it), I'd almost suggest simply renaming this to Meteor with the {{Bettersource}} tag since it's there's at least a bit more evidence than the current name. LinkTheLefty (talk) 23:06, 18 May 2015 (EDT)
- The only problem is there's already exist a article name Meteor. What I think is that Meteor and Raining Debris are the same . I will make a Proposal to merge Raining Debris with Meteor and we will see if it Passed. What you think about it?--

- The meteors of the Super Mario Galaxy games look and act the same as the ones from Paper Mario: Sticker Star and the New Super Mario Bros. series, and also seem to be named from an in-game level source (Through the Meteor Storm), so I'd say go for it. LinkTheLefty (talk) 14:55, 19 May 2015 (EDT)

Merge Raining Debris with Meteor[edit]
| This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit this section or its subsections. If you wish to discuss the article, please do so in a new section below the proposal. |
do not merge 5-10
They are mostly name meteor in some recent games. In New Super Mario Bros. U, there is a level name Meteor Moat, despite the fact, that in New Super Mario Bros. U this is mostly Bowser's fireball. As the article say, in Paper Mario: Sticker Star they are known as meteors despite a reference would be necessary. In general, the meteors of the Super Mario Galaxy games look and act the same as the ones from Paper Mario: Sticker Star and the New Super Mario Bros. series, and also seem to be named from an in-game level from Super Mario Galaxy, Through the Meteor Storm. It make evidences they are the same.

Oppose[edit]
- 1337star (talk) They may be meteors in NSMBU, sure. But what about the other games mentioned here, where the "raining debris" is clearly volcanic in origin? Calling them all "meteors" grossly misrepresents most of the instances on this page.
- Time Turner (talk) Per 1337.
- Pseudo-dino (talk) Per 1337star.
- Mario (talk) As I said, "'meteors' apply to space rocks that have entered a planet, not pyroclastic matter. The name we have at this moment is clunky, however. Unless this 'meteor' name has made more appearances than just this level, we don't use it." Finally, the Paper Mario: Sticker Star argument is a weak one because there is a citation needed tag attached to it. This is an issue of nomenclature for the most part, and I prefer "raining debris". It's fine the way it is now.
- Baby Luigi (talk) I don't like the "Raining Debris" name, it sounds too...layman and lack of vocabulary, how I say it. Possibly a better name is "Volcanic Rocks" or "Pyroclastic Rocks" (though the latter sounds too...ugh for the lack of a better word also, "professional" imo). But I don't like merging all of what the page has to offer into "Meteor". Maybe we could merge the New Super Mario Bros. U content into the Meteor article considering that it's sorta named that there. But I disagree with moving the entire page. As a very casual and very amateur astronomer, it just irks me to see the term "Meteor" also being used to describe volcanic matter which could perpetrate misconceptions. So definitely per 1337star and Mario on that regard. By the way, your Through the Meteor Storm example is weak, it clearly doesn't show that they're originated from the volcano from the planet, it shows that they're extraterrestrial in origin. I haven't played the game in a while though so I may be wrong.
- Lumastar (talk) Per all.
- Marshal Dan Troop (talk) Per all.
- Burningdragon25 (talk) Per all!
- TheHelper100 (talk) I'm not sure if somebody already said this but I'll say it anyway, Raining Debris are fired from volcanoes and although meteors are fired from space volcanoes some just randomly appear and there's no volcano in the area so I think it's safe to say that meteors are different from Raining Debris.
- Walkazo (talk) - Per all. The current name's terrible, but at least it's not misinformation, as would be the case if the content is merged, because things blown out of volcanoes are not meteors, they're Tephra, or Pyroclastic Debris, but like Baby Luigi pointed out about "Pyroclastic Rocks", those are probably too technical as replacement names. But "Volcanic Debris" seems like a good option: "volcano" isn't dense jargon at all, and overall, it's more descriptive than "Raining Debris" (which makes me think of the falling garbage in DK94 more than anything) or mere "Volcanic Rocks" (which could just be about the landscape / rocks on the ground).
Comments[edit]
By the way, in reality, volcanic rocks and meteors "look" about the same too and they pretty much "act" the same if you look at it casually: they're both really hot, giant boulders that fall from the sky (one of them came from a volcano shooting its stuff off while the other comes from outer space). Just something I'd throw out there.

That's exactly what meteors are. They are burning meteorites from outer space entering the planet.

Official Name[edit]
Today I got the Prima game guide of New Super Mario Bros. U. At the very end of the book, on page 253 , instead of calling Bowser 's Flame , they are called meteor. It say This Boost Mode chanllenge is similar to Coins in the Forecast - only this time, Mario must dodge falling meteors while he jumps around and collects Coins. Place plenty of Boost Blocks to give Mario options on where he can leap, and try to keep the Boost Blocks low so that Mario has enough time to avoid the meteors as he collects the falling Coins. One of this section also have a tip and it say: Tap Meteors to destroy them before they hit Mario. You can also tap the Coins to pop their parachutes and cause them to drop toward Mario more quickly Also one of the level of this game is name Meteor Moat. What about it?--

Helio and pyroclast[edit]
Both Helio and pyroclast are the same generic subject of "powerful lava rock" as this, and the former has the same lang-of-origin name. These should all be merged to pyroclast, as it is the recent in-game name. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:28, March 2, 2023 (EST)
- Pyroclast is a Mario + Rabbids stage hazard with a name that hasn't been used in any other game so I don't think we should jump the gun with that (not sure if Japanese is the lang of origin for the M+R games). Not sure what to say with Helio just yet, though at the very least it seems to be more sentient.

- That wasn't what I was talking about (didn't even think about Psychopath thoughts when typing my comment), I meant that Helio's rise out of the lava at the Czar Dragon's command and then eventually attack on their own; volcanic debris in other games is literally real life volcanic debris. Technically Pyroclasts might be too, but like I said because it's a Mario + Rabbids subject we're talking about that situation is a bit more complicated.

- The monster list bio in the remake: "It looks like a rock, so you might wonder if it can even be considered a monster. But since you can get a peek at its thoughts, it must be one, right?" I'd say this pretty much confirms Helios are a different thing from volcanic debris.

Hi uh, it turns out that the full name for "pyroclast" is actually "volcanic pyroclast" as seen here (the full term is displayed in bold); not only that, turns out its Japanese name may be "magma" as seen here, which is not the same as "Kazandan" (which is used for "volcanic debris" and "Helio").
Regardless, while I can see volcanic pyroclast being merged with volcanic debris, I don't really agree that "volcanic pyroclast" should be the resulting article's title, as it's not even the most recent title anymore; that honor might instead go to "Lava Ball", when GBA Lakeside Park has been introduce to Mario Kart Tour only a couple months after this discussion started.

Rename the article and absorb Volcanic pyroclast[edit]
| This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit this section or its subsections. If you wish to discuss the article, please do so in a new section below the proposal. |
Per our article naming guidelines, an article's name should be "the more commonly used modern name". I believe this kind of guideline doesn't adequately help cover this case, and potentially others like it. To explain that, I'll have to go over this subject's names across the franchise. Volcanic debris is an article about a recurring subject with many appearances throughout unrelated games, simply due to the fact that it is a generic real life thing. As a really unremarkable object, it is rarely ever even acknowledged in-game. When it is, it isn't with a unique name. The following table lists the names used to refer to this subject (mostly via official guides), including games where I believe the subject isn't ever acknowledged at all:
| Game | Name | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mario Party | N/A | The object is not mentioned in-game, seemingly no official guides exist for the game either, and the Nintendo Power issue on the game (#117) does not talk about the board at all. |
| Mario Kart: Super Circuit | Lava Boulder | Prima Guide, p. 49 |
| volcanic rock | Prima Guide, p. 87 | |
| New Super Mario Bros. | Volcanic debris | Player's Guide, p. 114 |
| Mario Kart Wii | lava fireball | Prima Guide, p. 80 |
| New Super Mario Bros. Wii | lava rock | Prima Guide, p. 152 |
| New Super Mario Bros. 2 | volcanic debris | Prima Guide, p. 152 (the page number is a coincidence) |
| Paper Mario: Sticker Star | molten rock | Prima eGuide, in the Rugged Road section |
| Mario & Luigi: Dream Team | fireball | Prima eGuide, in the Mount Pajamaja section |
| Mario Kart 8 | N/A | The object is not mentioned in-game, and the Prima Guide only generically refers to it as "lava" or "flame", if that counts for you. |
| Mario Kart Tour | Lava Ball | In-game action name. The first time I've been able to track an in-game source for this object. |
| Mario Kart World | lava bomb | In-game road sign, potentially unreliable (See: Robo DK) |
| Mario Tennis Fever | volcanic bomb | In-game Volcano Racket description |
While this obstacle appears in other games, I didn't look through them yet and it seems unlikely I'll find anything. But if anyone brings up more sources I'll add them to the list.
As you can see, this object is so generic it has almost zero consistency, and it is hardly ever even acknowledged in-game at all. I find it unlikely that any of those names carry any intention behind them like one would see with "? Block" or "Bill Blaster" (and were likely named by the guide writers out of necessity, but that's just my assumption). So rather than argue over what is the most common generic name or constantly rename the page every time someone calls these things a variation of lava/volcanic/fire/molten ball/boulder/bomb/rock/debris, I propose we use this case to create an exception to our guidelines:
If a subject has no recurring name, a generic name between the ones available may be chosen via proposal, regardless of how recent it is.
The goal is to pick a name based on utility rather than recency. In this case, I propose we use volcanic bomb as the article's name going forward. It is the name of the Wikipedia article on the same subject, meaning it is likely to be the most common name in the public consciousness. It is also the most accurate translation of the Japanese name for this subject, which is a lot more recurring than its English counterpart. You can see this in online dictionaries such as Jisho and WWWJDIC, reinforcing my first point. Lastly, it is also probably the current latest name (I haven't checked Meet up in Bellabel Park), if you still think that's important (I don't). I also offer lava bomb as another option. It's also used on Wikipedia and might be easier to understand.
This generic naming history has also led to the creation of a separate article, volcanic pyroclast, covering the same subject. I strongly believe that, had it not been named in-game, this brand of "volcanic rock that falls from the sky in a targeted area" would be covered under the "volcanic rock that falls from the sky in a targeted area" article. I am including a proposal to merge the article in here as the reasoning for its different name is pretty much the same.
Helio isn't being included here because I feel it existence as an enemy rather than an obstacle raises more questions that demand more discussion and I don't want to spread this proposal too thin.

Rename to "Volcanic bomb"[edit]
- LadySophie17 (talk) Per proposal.
- I... am R.O.B. (talk) Per Mario Tennis Fever.
- Arend (talk) Most recent title as of Fever + most literal translation (even if the Japanese version of Fever kind of strays away from this by calling it a regular rock, but it's the same concept still).
- Wandering Poplin (talk) Sounds like the most reasonable option to me! Per all.
- SolemnStormcloud (talk) Per all.
- Mr. Sorbetti (talk) Yeah, i agree.
- The Real Kiwano Temple Fan (talk) Primary choice. Per all.
- Camwoodstock (talk) Seems only fair, it's the most recent name.
- Mario4Ever (talk) Per proposal.
- Yoshi18 (talk) Per all.
Rename to "Lava bomb"[edit]
- The Real Redpepper Volcano Fan (talk) Second choice. It seems "lava" is used more often than "volcanic" when referring to these rocks.

- I... am R.O.B. (talk) Second choice. I think that a new policy should be created to use the most common name if a subject gets new names all the time, and only move the page to the new name once it settles (as in, appears in multiple games in a row).

@I... am R.O.B. Per your oppose vote, do you think "Volcanic debris", a name that has last appeared fourteen years ago (in a grand total of 15% of all my documented appearances) should have priority simply because it is by all technicality, the most used name (it appeared twice)? — Lady Sophie_17
(T|C) 16:38, August 24, 2026 (UTC)
- My point is that a new name shouldn't be automatically become the name of the page once it appears, especially if the page had a long history with a previous, more commonly-used name. I feel that this would avoid constant renaming back-and-forth (or move a page only for the move to be undone once a new game reveals the "new" name as temporary) until a string of games after the rename confirm the rename as the permanent name going forward. Like if "Bomber Bill" was only mentioned in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and one game, I wouldn't consider that the "new" name at that point (the Mario Portal entry for Super Mario World did establish it as the long-time new name) because there is always a chance that it was just a translation error or a temporary name, and only if Bomber Bill was used in another entry immediately following that one should the new name be set. I'm fine either way; the fact that this subject gets new names all the time makes me think of not renaming this page as a safeguard against constant, updating, and all-over-the-place subject renaming, making the most frequently used name (even if it's not the most recent) a good choice to leave this page as until "volcanic bomb" appears in another game; however, given the situation with all of these names, I'm also in support of just renaming this page to the current name, given that none of the names have appeared in more than two games. Let's just hope that this page doesn't become the subject of frequent renames. I... am R.O.B.
Don't judge me. 17:25, August 24, 2026 (UTC)
