“I can't see a thing!”
Left Eye, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Welcome to my user page! I have Äs to offer, as well as Ös and Üs, and – currently very hot, and only from Germany – ß!

Facts about me

What is there to say? When you've read the top of the page, you might have come to the conclusion that my name is Cobold. This isn't Mario-related in any way. Also don't try to look that word up in a dictionary.

I joined the Super Mario Wiki on January 22nd, 2007, and became a Patroller on June 12th, 2007. On September 3rd, 2007, I was promoted Sysop. On January 26th, 2008, I became one of the wiki's three Bureaucrats. For less important info, please see the Userbox Midi Tower.

Smash Bros.

The character I played most in Melee (as of current stats) is Young Link, 2nd most played is Zelda. The character I can play best with is Yoshi, for reasons I don't know.

Template:Spoiler A very well-written and in-depth review of Brawl ~ nuff said.

This image was created out of laziness in the long wait for Brawl. The scale for the characters includes Sheik, Zero Suit Samus and counts the Pokémon Trainer as three characters - what he effectively is.

Stages - generally, the stages follow a basic layout, and the historical Melee stages follow it. For example, the Melee Corneria stage got scaled down to be roughly the size of Norfair - for good or bad. The game features historical sites such as World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros., and adds latest areas from Nintendo's recent games, such as the Bridge of Eldin from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, released December '06, and also features non-Nintendo stages like Shadow Moses Island from Metal Gear Solid. But there are also obscure stages and gimmicks as seen in the Flat Zone stage of Melee, like the PictoChat stage or a stage in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker graphical style. But that's all nothing compared to the possibilities that the stage editor and the daily downloadable stage will give the creative Smash Brother.

There are many modes and collectibles in Brawl, which guarantee for endless fun - and use endless memory, 128 blocks excluding custom stages, screenshots and replays of fights. Brawl, Special Brawl with more functions than ever, Wi-Fi connection, Classic Mode, All-Star, Tourney, Rotation, Stadium with Target Smash, Home-Run Contest, Multi-Man Brawl, the Coin Launcher mini-game, and, and, and... This all is topped by the Subspace Emissary adventure mode, which, at second look, wouldn't even be needed to make the game fantastic.

Characters

God this section is outdated. I put this text here to annoy me long enough to take some time and update it.

Characters who I think will be good:

entry31.jpg In my opinion, Zelda has the best character design in this game and also a quite unique moveset. She's hard to master, which is even better considering that not anyone can play her easily. entry136.jpg A giant hammer-wielding, Waddle-Dee-throwing penguin? What's more awesome? In fact, King Dedede is great for being a strong and heavy character with an awesome recovery.
entry54.jpg Yoshi has great Smash Attacks which make him very powerful. My best character in Melee by far, and considering that he now has a recovery move, he can only get better. entry267.jpg Toon Link has a great design despite sadly copying from Link. He looks even better than Young Link was - my most played character in Melee. Yay for the Wind Waker style.
entry05.jpg Link's main weakness compared to his younger self was always his speed, which I personally rely more on. Considering that he didn't have much changes, he's still going to be good. entry237.jpg "Falcon Punch!" basically says it all. Captain Falcon is a very fun character to play with.
entry60.jpg I don't know much about him, but from what I've seen, he seems to take sword fight to a new level. His attacks are a bit unconventional. He's said to be good. entry25.jpg Some filler text in here, I have no idea why I put Samus there.

Characters who I think will be average:

entry04.jpg It's-a him, Mario! Indeed, Mario isn't anything special as a character, but he definitely has got the Mario style. It's always nice to play as him. entry230.jpg Luigi's rocket makes him a quite different character from Mario, and he definitely has a different style. I prefer Luigi over Mario. His character is more defined, Mario is just ... Mario.
entry38.jpg Bowser's design has greatly improved from Melee, this is the actual Bowser! His smash attacks are smashing, I played him third most previously and he's still going to be one of my favourites. entry73.jpg I didn't play Peach much myself, but I can't argue that she's pretty decent. Vegetables can be annoying. Her Smash Attacks are a bit crazy as well.
entry250.jpg He's the ultimate Retro character and simply a must in an All-Star game. Old school in all ways. He's a crazy character and will remain fun to play as. entry18.jpg Kirby has style, period.
entry222.jpg entry21.jpg
entry234.jpg entry268.jpg

Characters I don't know how they will be:

entry197.jpg I didn't play Pikmin much but I still know that they are awesome. Olimar's character looks interesting, he has a very unconventional moveset and looks like not many people are going to play as him. entry68.jpg I don't like this guy's voice, but his Pokémon definitely represent the first generation of Pokémon, and thus the only one I'm familiar with. All Pokémon (Schiggy, Bisaknosp, Glurak) look great so far.
entry88.jpg Some Kirby guy I didn't really know before. entry248.jpg R.O.B. is everywhere! Well, some comeback for this guy.
lucariojd2.jpg Aww, this is how Lucario looks at his best.
Okay, he's not that bad, I just think that Mewtwo was better.
entry121.jpg I think he's a pretty solid character, more than Solid Snake.
entry07.jpg entry111.jpg
entry28.jpg He's worth it for the humour. Eating his own bike...

Characters which won't be that good:

entry19.jpg entry263.jpg
entry46.jpg entry98.jpg

Characters which could have been left out:

entry103.jpg I don't think his style matches well with the Nintendo characters (unlike Sonic), he's definitely a different sort. Well, more diversity in the Brawl... entry257.jpg When looking at it, Ganondorf is the only true Bösewicht in this game aside from maybe Wolf. Thus, he's best as a target for some special brawl sessions.
entry218.jpg I'm bad at playing Ness and Ness is bad at recovering. entry76.jpg His recovery is like this: the longer you charge it, the higher you fly. But while you are charging, you fall down exactly the way you can fly higher because you charged. How is that supposed to work?

Stages

Mario Series

Delfino Plaza
There had to be a Sunshine stage, and this looks like one of the best solutions. Great design for a great game, what do I want more? Music. And the Ricco Harbour music is there, so all expectations fulfilled for this one.

Luigi's Mansion
The mansion is a must as a stage for Luigi, though the breakable tiles rather are rather strange and unneeded. Not every stage has to be entirely true to the game either, and this stage still has much Luigi's Mansion flair. It makes the stage less boring.

Mario Circuit
Here we go! Mario Sports games are great, so a stage for them is good to see. It's good that it didn't turn out into a Mute City or Big Blue remake, Mario Kart games are definitely different. This stage is a bit unusual, I've got the feeling that it could have been better, but that doesn't mean it's not good nontheless.

Rainbow Cruise

Rainbow Ride
Super Mario 64 was a great game, Rainbow Ride was the best course in it. It's pretty cool that there's still a stage for it in the Brawl, they really cover almost all of the Mario series in this game, new, old and spin-off. The stage itself is of course not new, but that shouldn't hurt the feel, in fact add to it as it is closer to the original.

Donkey Kong Series Yoshi Series

Rumble Falls
Icicle Mountain in a new, better look. Slower scrolling than the Melee version, nice gimmicks on your way to the top and generally a unique feel makes this a good stage.

Jungle Japes
A good stage in Melee. Subject to the same size problems as all other historical stages, but still a classic.

Yoshi's Island
Comes in a Yoshi feeling and has a Yoshi feeling. Nothing spectacular after Yoshi's Story from Melee and Yoshi's Island from the original Smash Bros.

Yoshi's Island
The stage with the hidden trap for those who concentrate on their opponents too much and disregard the stage. Super Mario World was another great Mario game, and it's quite surprising that it still has a Smash Bros. stage.

Retro

Mushroomy Kingdom
Old games turned old - interesting concept. This brings back good memories from the original Super Mario Bros. It fits much better than previous Mushroom Kingdom stages from Smash Bros., and considering that it's 2-in-1, it's bound not to get boring soon.

Mushroomy Kingdom
Actually too good not to mention it a second time. Underground areas like this are also a classic in Super Mario Bros. This is the best solution, include both overworld and underground to be true to the game. The top line of blocks get into the way of KOs though

75m
I never played the original game, so I don't know what to think about this stage. For being the first successful Nintendo game ever, the first ever Mario game etc., this deserves a stop, though I'm not sure whether a stage would have been needed.

Mario Bros.
A classical game, even more than Super Mario Bros. 2. If you are playing a stock match, it's going to be finished soon. This is more a contest of picking up turtles and throwing them than really fighting. Not really intriguing.

Zelda Series Wario Series

Bridge of Eldin
Nice choice for a Zelda stage, had epic moments in Zelda TP. Completely flat and still not boring. The bombing of the bridge is a bit annoying sometimes.

Pirate Ship
Awesome design for a Windwaker stage, truly represents the game. This will be a very interesting stage to play on.

Temple
Good Melee stage, definitely worth being in Brawl. Being the third Zelda stage in the Brawl, this is actually based on more classical Zelda games I'm not quite fond of. One for everyone.

WarioWare
WarioWare games are fast and crazy, and this stage seems to fit them best. A very funny stage to play on, you just don't have to expect anything fair.

Metroid Series Animal Crossing Series

Frigate Orpheon
Metroid stages where definitely needing something different from the Brinstar layout, which didn't get better through Brinstar Depths in Melee and Norfair in Brawl. The only Metroid game I've seriously played was Metroid Fusion, so this fits better for me.

Norfair
A bad copy of Brinstar and Flat Zone from Melee - nothing really interesting on the stage, but features annoying harrasses which come out of everywhere. A "hot" stage.

Brinstar
Blah, same as Melee. This should turn out better than the Norfair stage as it has destructible parts and generally looks less artificial.

Smashville
The stage itself is pretty simple. There's a need for those stages after all those with special effects and this and that. A different stage at different day times, but not much. An alternate Battlefield.

Pokémon Series Fire Emblem Series

Spear Pillar
Strange place, definitely something new for a Pokémon stage. The tunnel is a good addition, and the harrasses are a bit fairer that that of Norfair and WarioWare, though they can still be quite annoying.

Pokémon Stadium 2
Basically the same stage as to the right, but with different, more annoying environments. Also, you now can see Pokémons in the background - Pokémon Stadium will stay the easy stage for Training Mode, forget Battlefield.

Pokémon Stadium
The same thing with different changes. Not exactly spectacular, Poké Floats was an interesting concept and this is simply a copy. But I didn't expect anything else from the creators, it's just a matter of taste on which to play on.

Castle Siege
The concept is interesting, but the changes between the areas are really bad. I don't know Fire Emblem games, but this looks very good and has some catchy music.

Kirby Series Star Fox Series

Halberd
This has a nice setting and some environmental changes. The weapons in the background are a bit annoying at times.

Green Greens
I liked Fountain of Dreams better, but a second Kirby stage is better than nothing.

Lylat Cruise

Lylat Cruise
A quite general stage which takes its gameplay elements straight from Battlefield. But the background is nice, there definitely is more action ongoing than on the various backgrounds of Final Destination in Melee.

Corneria
This was great in Melee, but as it got scaled down it lost some of its feel. Might still serve for good battles.

F-Zero Series EarthBound/Mother Series

Port Town Aero Dive
Basically Mute City in a new look, nothing surprising. The track has a nice design, but you don't really get to see anything because it's so fast.

Big Blue
Was great in Melee, though it is bound to suffer from its smaller size in Brawl. But I guess it's still worth some fights.

New Pork City
Big. I mean, really big. So big that I've got trouble making out the characters on the screen. The platforms are arranged totally randomly, there is no overview and the Chimera eats you for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not really funny.

Onett
Was good in Melee and is still good in Brawl.

Pikmin Series Kid Icarus Series Game & Watch Ice Climber

Distant Planet
Pikmin feeling fits well into this stage. The Onions should appear longer before leaving again, it makes the pellets rather useless.

Skyworld
There is really a problem with platforms which you can't go through from below. Most KOs in this stage are a result of that.

Flat Zone 2
Appears to be Flat Zone with different games featured on it. The border is more tolerant that in Melee, but still you can get thrown off easily. Classical.

The Summit

The Summit
This stage is changing itself completely, but does better than Castle Siege. Most of the gameplay here is directed to not falling into the water or slipping from the iceberg.

Electroplankton Metal Gear Solid Series Sonic the Hedgehog Series Nintendo DS

Hanenbow
Weird. I'd like to shake hands with the guy who thought I'd be cool to make the water not real water at all.

Shadow Moses Island
Playing this stage with Sonic is a pain. There is no real way to KO when all your knockout moves throw the enemies to the side, and that results into nothing.

Green Hill Zone
I don't know Sonic games, but this stage seems to fit him best. It looks nice to play on. Sonic music on it is definitely to anything from Nintendo.

PictoChat
Awesome stage, definitely worth to play. PictoChat rules, and I don't even own a DS to know that!

Super Smash Bros. Series Stage Builder

Battlefield
Basic stage, basic layout, known one. It got better with the background and the day-time change, so this is a solid stage to play on.

Final Destination
The German translation of this made me laugh (this was untranslated last time): "Letzte Station". That, quite litterally, means "final station" of a train.

Custom Stage
Yes! This is what I've always been looking for. Beware of my craziest stages ever!

Games I have (played)

The second most anticipated game for me is StarCraft II.

Other Nintendo games I own:

And here comes the infamous table of Games I've Played. Scroll down for more vital stuff.

Games I've Played
Name Comments Beaten
Donkey Kong '94
File:MKwii Itembox.jpg
Good addition to the original arcade game, of which I played the Brawl demo which I found very boring. It's fun to play. What else is there to ask for? Ah, revisiting previous levels if you already have a world map. File:X mark.png
Super Mario World
File:Fireflower.jpgFile:Fireflower.jpg
Aah, the good old days. Great game, but it should allow you to save every time you want to. It is supreme to the Bros. games with its world map with alternate paths and secrets. File:X mark.png
North American box art of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
File:MKwii Itembox.jpg
Nice colours and overall presentation, the gameplay mechanics work great and the saving system is better than in previous side-scrolling games by Nintendo. File:X mark.png
North American box art for Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario All-Stars
File:Fireflower.jpgFile:Fireflower.jpg
The best graphical improvements that could have happened to the original games. File:X mark.png
Super Mario 64
File:Fireflower.jpg
This is surely a good Mario game, but I don't get all the excitement about it. It's just another, rather hard one, on the list. File:Check small.png
Super Mario Sunshine
File:Star.PNG
I like the setting of it, the graphics, the ... Almost everything. Well, the secret levels are a bit too hard. File:Check small.png
Super Mario Galaxy
File:Star.PNGFile:Star.PNGFile:Star.PNG
It takes the bad things of Sunshine out (and I loved Sunshine already), and with its own features creates one of the most awesome games I've played in a long time. Cooperative play looks like a cheap throw-in, but we've been using it often enough and it is fairly good. File:Check small.png
New Super Mario Bros.
File:Fireflower.jpg
It has a great design but is really hard, at some levels harder than the original SMB. File:X mark.png
Sm64ds.jpg
Super Mario 64 DS
File:Fireflower.jpg
It's a great remake and much more fun to play than the original Super Mario 64. File:X mark.png
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
File:Star.PNGFile:Star.PNG
This game manages to mix the general RPG game genre with numerous mini-games, a fair battle system and a great world to explore. When compared to the Paper Mario games, it also has a less predictable story. File:Check small.png
Paper Mario
File:Star.PNG
It has a great world and makes the best out of the fairly unoriginal story. The characters look fine in paper form, but the paper element itself is not used as an element. The battle system itself is fair, but it has not enough stats you can give to your partner, and Star Powers are rather cheap to execute. File:Check small.png
North American box art for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Paper Mario: Die Legende vom Äonentor
File:Star.PNGFile:Star.PNG
Overall impression: totally awesome! The paper element gets its right here, the battle system is new and improved, the story is more original. There are nice twists in the game such as Bowser platformer levels and walking in the background. Your party has more personality overall. The Trouble Center adds nice sidequests, but the Pit of 100 Trials is a bit too hard. File:Check small.png
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
File:Star.PNGFile:Star.PNG
The story finally is more spontaneous, not evolving about seven somethings. This offers you a free-roaming world to explore, and quests which can be done in a different order. Earlier places may be revisited during the storyline as well. The battle and level-up system is greatly designed, but Bros. Attacks can be a spoiler when you are overusing them. Even without partners, you meet many colourful characters. The mini-games are better integrated than in Super Mario RPG. File:Check small.png
Luigi's Mansion
File:Mushroom2.PNGFile:Mushroom2.PNG
It's a bit monotonous, but quite ok. I still have to play the secret mansion (of PAL-land). File:Check small.png
Mario Party
File:Mushroom2.PNG
A headstart for the series, but it is lacking in serious parts. File:X mark.png
Mario Party 2
File:Fireflower.jpgFile:Fireflower.jpg
Best Mario Party game so far. The costumes do it, though Toad's sometimes looks silly. File:Check small.png
Mario Party 3
File:Mushroom2.PNGFile:Mushroom2.PNG
Not what you'd expect. The duel boards are pointless. File:X mark.png
Mario Party 4
File:Fireflower.jpg
Very restrictive in its board design. And I didn't need a story around the parties. Still, the Bowser board and the extra room are funny. File:X mark.png
Mario Party 5
File:Mushroom2.PNGFile:Mushroom2.PNG
No one needed the capsule system, I still don't get it. Nice new characters. The boards are finally really 3D! File:X mark.png
Mario Party 7
File:Fireflower.jpgFile:Fireflower.jpg
Best Mario Party since Mario Party 2. (though I still haven't played Party 6.) File:X mark.png
Mario Kart 64
File:Mushroom2.PNG
It's nice. The driving system (especially drifting) has some flaws, the character selection is really limited and most courses lack innovation, but it's passable overall. File:Check small.png
European Game Cover
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
File:Fireflower.jpg
While the two-racer system looks like a good idea, it is not a revolution and could easily have done without, creating not much difference in gameplay. Most of the tracks are nice, but some lack an original design. There are not enough courses all in all, and other sections lack variety as well. The characters being paired in teams prevents the game from having surprise additions to the driving roster. It is only a decent Mario Kart game overall, though the best choice for Battle Mode. File:Check small.png
Mario Kart Wii

Featuring both revolutionary (Wii Wheel) and classical (Nunchuck) control schemes, and bikes, it creates much more variety. The new courses are designed well and the Retro tracks have been polished up to meet Wii graphics standards. The cup, drivers and kart system are improved and Wi-Fi is bound to ensure replay value. A major upgrade to Double Dash!!, when ignoring Mario Kart DS it is a reinvention of Mario Kart driving. I'm enjoying it very much. File:Check small.png

Nice even for a football game. A problem is the game's limited choice of characters. Other sports games have a quite a lot bigger choice. File:Check small.png

It's great but fails to surprise, partly because there isn't anything surprising, partly because I have consumed too much information before it even came out. It has not much to offer if you already played the GameCube game to death. Online is a nice addition, though it could have had more options. The single-player mode has little innovations. In no relation to anything, just too funny to forget them.

“I don't give a flying shnitzel about what you and other users may think about me.”

“I call it killing two Condors with one mushroom block.”

Mario (species)

Marios are identical mustachioed human race who love to play with each other, or any Nintendo characters including the real Mario. They first appear in the upcoming game called, Mario's Mirror Mania where he is divided into eight of them with many colors.

Biology

A Mario's best feature is his moustache, which keeps him cute and playful. While playing with him, you'll pull his moustache, stretch it back and let it go to drive him nuts. Just like Mario, his species use to jump, run, slide and kick their way. They probably hug and take care of each other while they have white gloves, along with their color. Marios also have eyes, these are related to Mario's. He himself has blue, and the others' have different colored, except for the others in Super Smash Bros Brawl.

Outfit Pigment

The color of their hat and shirt can be anything, even black and white. They can change their color by grabbing a fireflower, and yet their colors are related to Yoshis or the Neopets from the Neopets website. In the Super Smash Bros series, a player changes one of a Mario's five or six colors when they chose him. In the upcoming game Mario's Mirror Mania, Marios had abilities depending on their color and Mirror Mushrooms. If a Pink Mario gets a Mirror Mushroom, it could hurl love-hearts at foes. If a Green Mario gets a Mirror Mushroom, it could use earthquake. Their overalls' color is in conjuction with their clothes, except their pair of brown shoes; a red Mario has blue overalls, a blue Mario has pink overalls, ect.
