Italics

Hello, Rykitu! Thanks for your contributions. When writing titles for media like games, films, TV shows, and publications, please remember to italicize them. This is done by placing two straight apostrophes (not quotation marks or curly apostrophes) on both sides of the title, or clicking on the I icon above the text box and typing out the title. For example, typing out ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' generates Super Mario Bros. If you are using a device that uses curly ("smart") punctuation, you may need to disable this function in your device's settings to be able to type out the correct apostrophes.

Also, you can add images to the wiki through Special:Upload. Help:Image and Help:Gallery explain how to then add them to pages. Mario JC 22:33, September 28, 2024 (EDT)

Sorry for not responding in a long time (like you would even care), I now know how to italicize titles and such, I have improved. The only issue is that I can’t figure out how to remove italics from parentheses. I want to un-italicize those because it isn’t apart of the actual title. So if you, or any other admin see my editions to the List of locations by media page and find out I forgot to un-italicize "(coloring/activity books)" from Donkey Kong, that is why.

Uploading images

Don't know how it looks on mobile, but on desktop view at least, the "tools" column on the left has an "upload file" option; the rest of the directions are explained there. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:14, February 23, 2025 (EST)

I know where the option to upload images is. The problem is that the process is so confusing. For example, I tried getting an image for Public Service Announcement (my first ever page) from this Twitter post and I inserted a description, where I got it from, etc. but it would end up as a .jpeg when .png and .jpg were the preferred style. And I was worried that the image was going to show up in low quality or the image showing up very tiny or very large. And since I was still new, I was way too worried about me not doing something right and end up getting a warning by an admin for something I didn't think was wrong. The image for the article has since been added by another user. Rykitu

The game list on your user page

Hi, I like the quips you've made about those Mario games.

But, with them pictures in actual size instead of, say, x200px or so, it makes it difficult to scroll comfortably, seeing only one image per screen scroll.

Sorry about that! I'm a mobile user, so that problem didn't affect my experience, but I changed the size to 64px. Hopefully that makes things better. Rykitu

Question about list of characters

Hello. I noticed that you added red-link "Hercules" and "Kuro-Cula" to the list of characters. Are these Battle Beetle and Kurokyura? Blinker (talk) 16:00, May 1, 2025 (EDT)

I added them after watching GTV Japan's videos on the Super Mario Kodansha manga. However, I can understand if GTV misunderstood them for characters due to translation errors. For example, in the Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 volume, GTV said a bull character was named "Beef-un" which I added to the list because I thought it was different from an actual character from the game. But since there is a boss in the game with a very similar appearance, I thought it could possibly be the same character. After going to the Names in other languages section for Minotaur, the Japanese name was "beef" so I removed the duplicate. This same issue might've applied to some enemies from the Mario land games. So they might not actually be characters. Thanks for pointing that out! I am a bit skeptical on removing Hercules because in the volumes he appeared in, he had a huge role and might have his own name, but Kuro-Cula definitely is just the enemy. Rykitu

Watch Game release year

Yeah, I didn't get the year from the most trustworthy source. The eBay listing I found this thing on lists it as being from 1991 in the description ("Up for sale is an exceedingly rare 1991 super Mario land 2 watch game!"), though I don't have any alternate sources for this. Yeah, not very trustworthy. If Wario made an appearance in the background and his first appearance was labeled "(Watch Game) (1991)" because of that source, people would be confused. Rykitu

Lost media definition

I understand what you are saying (I also apologize if it is unorthodox to respond to something sent to another user, I just noticed your comment in the "Recent Changes" thread), and I agree with that definition when it comes to games that had a commercial release, but I think that - for arcade games or titles that cannot easily be dumped as ROM files - that something like this should be counted as lost media specifically if it doesn't fit any of the following criteria:

• The media is available online
• The media is available at one or more physical locations (Būbū Mario, for instance, is also playable at one arcade in Madrid and the Canary Islands, of which I cannot find the link to the Reddit thread again for the life of me)
• The media is still available through some methods via official channels
• The media is available through auction sites or purchasable through other methods

Maybe a separate template should be proposed at some point for media that is not feasibly accessible? Nelsonic (talk edits) 15:43, June 10, 2025 (EDT)

@Nelsonic I have had a lot of arguments with people on this wiki on what the definition of lost media is. I argued that the Super Mario Bros. Watches and some books were lost media because of their absence on emulators like MAME and no scans online, to which the response was identical to what Maw-Ray Master said. I can understand that definition, and yes, I do think a proposal for what classifies as lost media should be made. There is also another proposal going on about whether or not the lost template should be deleted, so we might want that to settle first before we do anything here. Rykitu

Awesome work! Commercials may have a relatively utilitarian, mercantile purpose, but I'd say it's still warranted to have more detailed coverage of them, especially as they may feature some kind of narrative. Thank you! This was a project that I had in mind ever since I joined the wiki, seeing as how the page was basically useless after gamepressure (which was the website hosting 99% of the links on the page) shut down their advertisement section. So I decided to restore the page by not only finding the links on YouTube corresponding to the dead gamepressure links, but in the future, make pages for the characters seen in the commercials. RE: It's Me, Mario! deletion

The page basically copies what's already present in the section and making it its own page (and that's not all I said; the sentence after that is important too, which would've made the table redundant). What is lost media? proposal

Now that the proposal is (or will be) implemented, the pieces of media in the categories that have been opposed shouldn't have the template. And I guess adding clarification on the template's page would be useful. Rykitu

About List of Advertisements...

Hmmmmm... I've heard about this one thanks to the Super Mario Wiki's Twitter account. It is already mentioned on the game's article, and sense it is an advertisement, its gotta be on the list too. I think I'll label this as the one and only US commercial as I don't think the international uploads (if there were any) had this feature. But if I do find an archived upload of one of those, I'll mark that as a dub. This situation also makes me wonder what other forms of advertising should be on the list. I did take screenshots of an interactable Donkey Kong Bananza advertisement I came across on FlipaClip, or what about banner advertisements that would cover your screen on sites like Fandom? Rykitu

That works for us! We don't know if there's any elegant way to cover advertisements that aren't videos in the current setup, but, the YouTube ad is literally just a video in a fancy player. I'm not the kind of person to answer a question like that, but from one Google search, three popular recommendations are Proton Mail, Mailfence, and Hushmail. I didn't validate the legitimacy of such services, so I think it's best to look into those first and see if those are good options before you potentially get a virus. Rykitu
