User:Rykitu/List of pre-release and unused characters
Due to various reasons, a project can end up being canceled, cease production, or heavily reworked to create something different. In the process of development, characters can get scrapped or replaced for one reason or another.
This is a list of characters in the Super Mario that have been scrapped or did not make it into the final product.
Saturday Supercade
Señor Alfredo
Señor Alfredo is a green-clothed matador seen in reference sheets for the Saturday Supercade episode "El Donkey Kong", though he never appeared in the episode. If he did appear, it is likely he would have taken the role of Don Diego or Cabeza.
The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3
Frankie Pavlone and Annette Fetticini
Frankie Pavlone and Annette Fetticini are respectively the king and queen of Beach Land who would have appeared in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "Kowabunga Koopa!". In the episode, King Koopa and Bully go to Beach Land to meet the king and queen: their rivals in the land's annual surfing competition. To eliminate them, Koopa orders Bully to kidnap them in a gigantic sandcastle. Mario and his friends would eventually defeat Koopa's minions and save them.
Frankie and Annette's names are references to Italian-American singer Frank Sinatra and teen actress Annette Funicello, respectively.
Mario Tennis
Walpeach
Alongside Goomba, Bullet Bill, and Whomp, Camelot suggested a potential bad counterpart to Princess Peach to Nintendo. This idea was turned down by Shigeru Miyamoto and other staff members to avoid similarities to Doronjo from Yatterman. This idea was pitched to Nintendo again by Fumihide Aoki for Mario Power Tennis. Some concept art and a model was made depicting her wearing a purple outfit (that would have been colored if the character was accepted) and a pointy crown. This time she was rejected because Nintendo had no one else to pair her with. Aoki described her as "defying everyone's expectations in a good way", mentioning she would have a cute but scary personality when angry, see Peach as her rival, and be the descendant of a fallen royal family. Walpeach would have treated Wario and Waluigi as her boss, once again paralleling the Dorombo gang from Yatterman. Aoki also stated that if she was accepted, she might have replaced Bowser's role in the game's animated intro, along with being associated with cherry tomatoes similar to Wario being associated with garlic. Aoki planned for her to have Yoshi-based sidekick resembling a dragon with horns and wings, but this idea never came through.
Diddy Kong Pilot (2001)
Redneck Kong
A tentatively named character named Redneck Kong or Crappy Kong was going to be playable in the canceled Diddy Kong Pilot. He was "killed off" early into the game's development and was replaced with Candy Kong.
Mario Power Tennis
Potato
Potato is a young girl in a green dress with glasses created by Fumihide Aoki for Mario Power Tennis. Fumihide created concept art for the character, but never proposed it to Nintendo. When Aoki posted about the character on Instagram, he stated she was designed with a "rich country girl" in mind and she would have had a laid-back and clumsy personality with Power as her skill type.
Diddy Kong Racing Adventure
Baron von Snort
Baron von Snort was going to be the main antagonist of the canceled Diddy Kong Racing Adventure before the role was replaced by Wizpig early into development. After Wizpig's defeat, Baron von Snort and the Kremlings plot their revenge by kidnapping the Kongs and bulldozing over Kongo Island to form a giant raceway, all while Diddy Kong was on Timber Island. Once Diddy returns, he gathers all the playable characters from Diddy Kong Racing to challenge Baron von Snort and stop the destruction on Kongo Island.
