A proposed change to the Mario Wiki rules navbox. The "General" section has been split into "Formatting and style" and "Content" while the old "Content" section has been renamed "Coverage". All names are subject to change. My logic is as follows:

  • The Formatting and style section governs guidelines around how content should be displayed, rules grammar, organization, navigation and notice templates, etc. Aspects that are ultimately unrelated to Super Mario and that focus generally on wiki upkeep.
  • The Content section then contains guidelines about specific areas of the wiki, which can either appear as sections of an article or articles themselves. They generally cover the rules on what is allowed on each section and how they should be formatted. This has some overlap with the previous section (especially regarding the Manual of Style), which could be worked out later. Basically if it is a page about a type of section, split section, or list article, it goes here.
  • The Coverage section is named after our coverage page, and contains guidelines about what is allowed here or not, and the broad strokes of how our approach to covering our content. Our policy on chronology and canonicty, what we do with generic subjects or minor NPCs, broad content-focused guidelines that are not strictly about organization.

Keep in mind that naturally there is a lot of overlap between these sections. Many content guidelines also include rules on formatting and coverage, and vice versa, but I separated according to what I felt was the most fitting to each. Red links are proposed new articles to be made to properly codify our guidelines.

List of interactive elements in Super Nintendo World

Super Mario Land
Donkey Kong Country
  • Four KONG Letters can be found spread throughout the Donkey Kong Country area. Interacting with one using the Power-Up Band awards the guest with a stamp of its respective letter.
    • Find locations
  • Like KONG Letters, two sets of four Puzzle Pieces can be found in the Donkey Kong Country area, specifically around its entrance. Unlike KONG Letters, however, Puzzle Pieces are not depicted in the park itself, instead only appearing as hidden interactive spots on various props. Interacting with each spot grants the guest one of the four pieces of the first puzzle. After all four pieces are collected, interacting with the same spots again grants the guest with pieces for the second puzzle.
    • Alternate locations??
  • An interactive Slot Machine Barrel can be found near the Mine-Cart Madness ride entrance. The barrel consists of an interactive screen depicting various items shifting in order. Touching the a specific item with a Power-Up Band grants the guest a stamp of that item.

Redesign our button icons

This proposal aims to address the wild west that is {{button}}. While a decent template that allows us to customize pages with icons that are pleasant to look at and help conveying information, it currently suffers from two major issues which we aim to fix: Legibility and consistency.

1. Legibility

Many of our current icons suffer from poor legibility. Either from a bad implementation or from sacrificing it in name of visual accuracy. Icons like Start Button and A Button are using a stacked design with the button and name above each other. This effectively means both elements are half as large as the text surrounding them, making them harder to understand. Try and read what is written here: START/PAUSE Button Other buttons like Control Stick and GamePad are too bright and become hard to read on light mode (even with outlines), and buttons like +Control Pad and A Button are too dark to read on dark mode. While the latter issue can be remedied by inverting their colors (which we already do), this is not idea as it also inverts aspects like shading, making the icons less appealing to look at.

2. Consistency

While not the most important reason, lack of consistency is certainly the most visually apparent one. Our icons are stylistically all over the place. The general direction is towards depicting the physical appearance of the button, but besides that, there is no unifying visual direction. Some icons are SVGs (A Button, B Button), some icons are pixel art pngs (A Button, R Button), and some are even just tiny images (Control Stick up, Wii Remote, shoutout to Stylus for being a 1,304×1,463 pixels image compressed down to around 18×18). A Button is an SVG mixing a smooth shaded circle with pixel art, while the NES controller doesn't even use pixel art letters. Some icons have shading and depth (A Button,ZR Button), while others have flat colors (R Button, Control Stick). Outlines are a coin toss. Sometimes icons look drastically different within the same controller (A Button and Select Button are both Game Boy Advance buttons, B Button and R Button are both Nintendo 64 buttons).

Our solution to this is a complete redesign of every single button in the template, with a focus on legibility and consistency. This means an SVG format, with flat colors, no outlines, no pixel art, etc. To keep the visual identity of each system represented, color, shape and font can altered to match when possible, without sacrificing legibility and consistency. The overalll direction is inspired by the Nintendo Classics line of apps on the Nintendo Switch systems, which have follow a similar direction. As such, the designs of most buttons are based on our current SVGs of Nintendo Switch buttons.

Here are a few examples of the types of changes made:

  • Text inside buttons is prioritized over stacking elements vertically.
  • Systems with similar enough button symbols can use the same file but retain separate template fields for clarity of use and easy updating (e.g.: {{button|nes|Pad}} and {{button|gb|Pad}}). In this case, the file used is named after the earliest appearance of the button.
  • Black and white buttons are made shades of gray for easier reading in both light and dark modes. This avoids having to invert colors between modes, keeping the same icon across both.

List of books found in Bowser's library in Bowser's Challenge

The following is a list of books found in the queue for the Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge attraction in the Universal Studios Japan version of Super Nintendo World. A few titles are in Japanese, and have been translated. Some of those books also appear in English with slightly different titles. Several titles reference the Mario Kart series, or aspects of Bowser's personality, such as his love for Princess Peach, his disdain of Mario and Luigi, and his various minions.
