Genshi Yoshi is Yoshi's ancestor from the Jurassic Era, who appears in the "Time Traveler" storyline of the Super Mario Kodansha manga. He was the one to discovere that the Yoshi-kind is able to swallow prey bigger than himself. He looks just like Yoshi, with his only (occasional) distinctive traits being a Hachimaki with「ジャストミート」(jasuto mīto, "meat only") written on it and a construction mallet.

Stuck in the Jurassic Era, Mario and Princess Peach are attacked by a T-Rex. While escaping, they come across Yoshi's ancestor, who is busy meditating. They hop on his back, pleading him to eat the T-Rex. Confused, Genshi Yoshi turns around and screams upon seeing the dinosaur, which falls straight into his mouth and is swallowed whole. Surprised, Genshi Yoshi celebrates, having found the skill he was looking for through meditation: the ability to swallow a bigger prey. He invites the two to his village, only to find it deserted. His sister Yoppī appears, explaining that some days ago, a giant spiky turtle came and enslaved their kind to build him a palace. Using Mario's Mogura Bakudan, Bowser's palace is destroyed, and the two Yoshi siblings free their people. Bowser then sics an army of T-Rexes against them, but Genshi Yoshi effortlessly swallows them all, forcing Bowser to escape to another time period, chased by the heroes, who are rewarded by the Yoshis with a bunch of stone-made Dragon Coins.

Centuries later, after being captured by Geronimo Yoshi's tribe, Peach is recognized by the Native American Yoshis through a statue left by Genshi Yoshi of him and the time traveling heroes, and she is set free for helping their ancestor's tribe.
