Starting blocks are a set of three pink blocks that debuted in New Super Mario Bros. U, and made further appearances in Super Mario Maker, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and Super Mario Maker 2. They are similar in function to the respawn platforms in Mario Bros. and the Super Smash Bros. series.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Starting blocks first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. U, they appear underneath the player during challenges in which the player cannot touch the ground, disappearing after they jump or fall off. Starting blocks reappear in the game's Nintendo Switch port, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, serving the same function as previously described.

Super Mario Maker series[edit]

In all three of the Super Mario Maker games, starting blocks only appear when testing a level in Course Maker and there are no platforms below the player, spawning underneath the player and disappearing when the player jumps or walks off.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In both Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, starting blocks appear in the beginning of a battle in the stage Super Mario Maker, where they spawn underneath every player and fade out when the match begins.
