Variant of Yoshi

Red Yoshies are a variety of Yoshi that first appeared in Super Mario World. Red Yoshi makes consistent appearances across the Yoshi series, often as a playable variant. It also appears in many Mario series games, either as a pallet swap for Yoshi or as an independent playable character.

Super Mario series

Super Mario World

Red Yoshi makes its debut in Super Mario World, where it first appears in Star World 1. Red Yoshies can spit fire, regardless of which color Koopa Shell they eat. This trait can be combined with the natural abilities granted by eating Blue Shells and Yellow Shells as well; granting flight with the Blue Shell and shock wave stomps with the Yellow Shell. Once Red Yoshi spits the shells out, they will always become fireballs, much like standard Red Shells. Red Yoshies can be found as Baby Yoshies in both Star Road 1 and Star World 4. Once they are fed enough, they will grow into full sized Red Yoshies.

In the Gameboy Advance port of the game, Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World, Red Yoshies can appear in place of Yoshi in other levels once it has been rescued in the Star World; should Mario be Fire Mario, a Red Yoshi will appear from ? Blocks instead.

Super Mario 64 DS

Red Yoshi appear in Super Mario 64 DS in the game's multiplayer VS. Battle mode. The second player of a VS. Battle will control a Red Yoshi.

New Super Mario Bros.

Red Yoshi appears in several minigames in New Super Mario Bros.. Much like Super Mario 64 DS, Red Yoshi appears in multiplayer, though this time, Red Yoshi represents player 1 instead. Red Yoshi appears in Balloon Racing and Snowball Slam. In Balloon Racing, Red Yoshi's saddle and back spines are also colored blue.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

While Red Yoshies are not present in the final version of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, they were planned to be in the game. In the final version, they were replaced by Pink Yoshies. There is early artwork of Blue Toad riding a Red Yoshi.

Super Mario Run

Red Yoshi was released in Super Mario Run in the version 2.0.0 update on March 22, 2017 as an unlockable character. Red Yoshi can be unlocked by purchasing Red Yoshi's House, which itself is unlocked by gathering a total of 9999 Toads, 1000 of which must be Yellow Toads. Red Yoshi is capable of obtaining more Red Toads.

Super Mario Maker 2

Red Yoshi appears as a course element in Super Mario Maker 2. Red Yoshi can be used by placing a Super Mushroom on a Yoshi Egg or by tapping and holding a Yoshi Egg and selecting a Red Yoshi Egg from the mini menu. Red Yoshi is only available in the Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U themes and spits fireballs instead of extending its tongue. If the rider is in their fire form, Red Yoshi will spit out three fireballs instead of one.

Yoshi series

Yoshi's Island series

Red Yoshies have appeared in every Yoshi's Island series game since Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's island, where they are always playable in a world's seventh level, this being true for the GameBoy Advance port, Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island. Red Yoshi originally had red shoes in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, which changed to a more teal color in the GBA port before becoming the usual blue color seen in most modern appearances.

Yoshi Touch & Go

Red Yoshi appears as a playable character in Yoshi Touch & Go, appearing in Marathon Mode once the player has reached 6000 yards. It can hold up to 45 eggs and is succeeded by Black Yoshi once the player reaches 7000 yards.

Yoshi Story

Red Yoshi appears as a playable color option in Yoshi Story. In this game, Red Yoshi favors Apples as its favorite fruit, always restoring 3 health points upon eating one. It also gains more health points upon eating Red Shy Guys. Red Yoshi shares the same voice pitch as Pink Yoshi, being slightly higher than Green and Yellow Yoshi, but not as high as White Yoshi.

Yoshi's Woolly World/Pooch & Yoshi's Woolly World

Red Yoshi appears in Yoshi's Woolly World and its 3DS port as a playable Yoshi color. Unlike the other Yoshi colors, Red Yoshi evades capture at the beginning of the game, alongside Green, Pink or Light Blue Yoshi (depending on the save file chosen). It is the only Yoshi color unlocked at the start regardless of which save file is being played.

Yoshi's Crafted World

Red Yoshi appears in Yoshi's Crafted World, once again as a playable color option.

Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land

Red Yoshi appears in Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land, where it assists Mario, Luigi and Yoshi in rescuing Princess Peach and saving Dinosaur Land. Once Mario, Luigi and Yoshi defeat Lemmy Koopa in Vanilla Dome, they rescue a Yoshi Egg, which hatches into a red Baby Yoshi when the trio are on the Twin Bridges. The Baby Yoshi proceeds to swallow several Paratroopas before growing into a full sized Red Yoshi. Red Yoshi later assists Mario in defeating Larry, Ludwig, Roy and Morton by finding a Cape Feather for Mario to use. After the heroes destroy the fortress and save the Yoshi Eggs, Luigi runs off, prompting Red Yoshi to go and find him. Red Yoshi and Luigi later return to help Mario in his battle against King Koopa. Once King Koopa is defeated and Princess Peach is rescued, Red Yoshi joins them for a picnic.

Mario Kart series

Red Yoshi appears in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as an alternate palette swap for Yoshi. In the former, Red Yoshi is a downloadable skin for Yoshi while in Mario Kart 8, Red Yoshi is made available through purchasing both The Legend of Zelda x Mario Kart 8 and Animal Crossing x Mario Kart 8 DLC packs. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Red Yoshi remains as a palette swap of Yoshi, however it is available from the start of the game. Red Yoshi was used for the staff ghost in GCN Yoshi Circuit.

Red Yoshi also appears as a separate driver in Mario Kart Tour, where it debuted in the New Year's Tour. Red Yoshi is classified as a Super ranked driver and has the Yoshi Egg as its special item, much like Yoshi. The Red Turbo Yoshi, a variant of the Turbo Yoshi, also debuts in the same tour, which is based on Red Yoshi.

Paper Mario series

In Paper Mario, a Red Yoshi appears at the entrance to Yoshi's Village. When the Fearsome 5 go missing in Jade Jungle, the Red Yoshi starts to panic along with the other Yoshies.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, one of the possible colors the Mini-Yoshi can be is red, should the player wait 6-9 minutes after receiving the egg. In this game, the Mini-Yoshi has red skin, a green mohawk and shoes and dark grey colored pants with white polka-dots on them.

In Paper Mario: Color Splash, a Red Yoshi may appear and attack Mario during his fight against the Unicycle Shy Guys in The Emerald Circus.

Mario Super Sluggers

Red Yoshi appears as an unlockable playable character in Mario Super Sluggers as an alternate skin to Yoshi. Unlike Yoshi, however, Red Yoshi is not able to be selected as a team captain and is unable to use Yoshi's star swing or star pitch. Compared to Yoshi, Red Yoshi has lower pitching, fielding and running.

In the game's Challenge Mode, Red Yoshi appears in Yoshi Park and runs the shop in the park. Red Yoshi will only join the player after retrieving his paint brush from a treasure chest within the park, to which the player must then return to the Green Paratroopa in Wario City. After finding the paint brush, Red Yoshi will join the team.

Mario Tennis Open

Red Yoshi appears as an unlockable QR code character in Mario Tennis Open. In this game, it is classified as a Technique type character, alongwith Peach, Daisy, Luma and Pink Yoshi.

Mario Sports Mix

Red Yoshi appears in Mario Sports Mix as a non-playable character in the Dodgeball game. Here, Red Yoshi plays for the opposing team and appears in the box at the player's side of the court. Red Yoshi can also target players, but cannot exit the box if they land a hit against any of the players.
