The Mystery Mushroom is a power-up that appears in Super Mario Maker. It resembles the sprite of a Super Mushroom from Super Mario Bros. with a question mark printed on its cap. If Mario touches one, he will turn into one of various objects in the game, such as a ? Block or a Springboard, while granting himself an extra hit point.[1] Mystery Mushrooms can only be used in the Super Mario Bros. style of the game.

Additionally, if the player scans certain amiibo, an 8-bit sprite of the amiibo's character, known as a Mystery Suit[2], will appear on-screen, which can then be placed inside a block, turning it into a Mystery Mushroom. Upon touching one while playing, Mario will transform into Costume Mario, taking the appearance of the 8-bit sprite himself. It has the same effect as an ordinary Super Mushroom, except it maintains or shrinks Mario down to (depending on Mario's current state) Small Mario's size.

Trivia

  • If Mario takes the ? Block's form, he wears the block over his head as opposed to turning into one completely, similar to a Coin Box (albeit without the coins).
