Behedgers are deadly creatures that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. They are large mantis-like creatures resembling bushes. They also have glowing yellow eyes and huge scythe-like appendages. Behedgers are first encountered in Chapter 5: Bug Country in the Behedger Habitat. One later appears in A Perilous Passage.

At first, the Behedger in the Behedger Habitat does not appear until the door of the ruins is sealed off and prevents Yoshi from leaving. With Yoshi obligated to search for four Keys to escape, the Behedger can be found patrolling the ruins. While patrolling, its eyes are yellow but turn red when it spots Yoshi or any other creature. Once it has a target on sight, the Behedger accelerates to hunt down its prey with its scythe-like appendages. If a Behedger strikes Yoshi, he will be immediately sent back to the beginning of the stage and will lose all of the Keys he has collected so far, forcing him to find them all again (this will not happen if the door was already open before the strike). It is possible for Yoshi to avoid the Behedger's strike the moment its scythe glows.

Because of its huge size, a Behedger can be avoided by hiding in select locations in the ruins like inside jars and logs (which can still be cut by the Behedger). Yoshi can also sneak pass a Behedger by walking low in tall grass or a pool of mud. Yoshi can also distract the Behedger by using another creature as bait or stun it with an Egg or a Ground Pound. These tricks are very useful if the player tries to escape the ruins without being spotted once by the Behedger. If the Behedger loses track of Yoshi, it will either go back to patrol or hide nearby by posing as a bush.

Behedgers are shown to dislike light as the one in the Behedger Habitat will stop pursuing Yoshi once he gets into the sunlight outside the ruins. If it touches sunlight, the Behedger's eyes turn blue and it will retreat back into the ruins. One of the discoveries states the Behedger was meant to defend the ruins it lives in.

Despite their bush-like appearance, Behedgers do not taste like plants and are stated to taste like metal instead. This implies that they are somewhat robot-like which is supported by the fact an adult Behedger makes a small clockwork-like sound while pursuing its prey. However, they still have animal-like features as Behedger hatchlings can be hatched from green eggs (which can be used like normal Eggs). Unlike an adult Behedger, Behedger children are small and yellow with black eyes while their appendages are short and green. If an adult Behedger sees one of its young on Yoshi, the adult will refrain from attacking.

Naming[edit]

"Behedger" is a play on "beheader" (a person who beheads someone else during an execution) and "hedge" in reference to its bush-like appearance. It may also incorporate "beholder" (an observer who looks or pays attention at something) in reference to its execution-like cutting and its patrolling behavior.

When the name is suggested by Mr. E, he says the following:

“It hides among hedges, then suddenly slashes with a sharp blade...so how about Behedger?”
Mr. E
