Major Editing

The recent Merchanidse articles by 3dejong need some major work. One sentence descriptions just don't cut it. We need to know the name of the companies producing these products, when they were released, where they were released and other notes. A lot of the merchandise seems like something a normal person could make out of clay. We need to know the official manufacturers. Without them, the merchandise has the same valididty here as fan games (i.e. none). -- Son of Suns

If we can't find enough information for each toy to constitute a page, maybe we should create only a few pages for each category of merchandise (ex: a Mario Toys page, a Mario Plushies page, a Mario Figurines page, etc) and add some info about the category of merchandise on the top, and have the rest be a gallery of all the images we have. --Steve (talk) 15:26, 14 October 2006 (EDT) EDIT: Oh my, I just noticed Wayoshi sorta did that with the Yoshi plushies. That's a good idea. We should try to combine similar merchandise. We also need to figure out if the merchandise is legitimate or not. Anything fan-made needs to be deleted. -- Son of Suns

I don't think anything is fan-made, it's all official. But I agree, consolidating the acticles is a good idea, and I do need to work on fleshing them out. In the meantime, I'll keep uploading, but once all the articles are finished, I will work on consolidation. Also, I do have all the dates for the items, if we need to add them. OK, on the Toad plush I just added, I put the date in. However, there just isn't much you can say about a Toad doll, so I'm thinking that, like Steve said, we should just have one article, like Plushies, and have a large gallery of all the items, like with the Yoshi plushes. Should I go ahead and upload all the rest of the artices, or should we make a gallery? 3dejong

Dead-End Pages

It has come to my attention that many of the 63 "dead-end" articles (articles that have no internal links besides categories to another page on the wiki, creating a 'dead-end') are merchandise pages. This is another issue that needs to be resolved. Wayoshi _TC@ 13:10, 15 October 2006 (EDT)

Final Resolution

We have to compress the very short (less than three sentences) merchandise articles into one gallery, such as Luigi Bobblehead or Blargg Stamp. Although it would be cluttered and messy, we can separate it into sections, and that would be much better than so many short illegimate articles. As stated before, our goal is not to have many short articles but to have expansive articles. We already have a few gallery articles but this is what we'll have to create. It will be set up like this:

GBA cards

Major Merge?

Nearly all of these articles are stubs, so would it be a good idea to merge these into gallery articles? Maybe classify them by clothing, food, toys, collectibles, and miscellaneous items? However, the books should still keep their articles since there's a lot more content to be covered. I found some sort of arcade style game called the Super Mario World Lucky Coin Arcade Token Toy Catcher (it's a mouthful, I know), and I think it might be worth adding somewhere. Merchandise game categories

Yes. As a general rule we have always seemed to categorize scans or covers of game guides as a "game" image. It is fair to extend to other merchandise media too, where that merchandise has been made to promote a particular game.

Create new articles for Super Mario Bros. Monopoly, and Super Mario UNO

There are now more board/card games that is Mario-related in recent years: Monopoly and UNO. Not to be confused with Nintendo Monopoly and Nintendo UNO, that were released years ago. Can someone create these new articles? Here are the images of these from their official sites, for references:

I cannot help with the Monopoly, while I have the Japanese Super Mario UNO set because at the time Mattel din't confirm that it was coming in the West. I already scanned them, but never extracted the single cards from the scans. Collector's Pins?

Alright, so there are these Mario collector's pins that are sold in stores, and I think they should definitely be added to the list. But which category should be added to?? I was thinking probably either clothing or accessories, but I honestly don't know which one to go with. Heck, they could even arguably go in keychains. Which one should I put them in?? Board/Card game release dates?

I'm currently working on the split List of physical games and I noticed that many of the board and card games do not have release dates given, and I cannot find anything about some of them online... does anyone know when some of these (i.e. Donkey Kong Taru Taru Adventure) released? I have been researching a lot about these games for my own personal list of Mario media. And unfortunately, a lot of the board games released before the 2010s don't really have release dates. And I couldn't find some of the board games anywhere online that were listed. Examples include the Donkey Kong Jr. board game which the user who added it to the list had to show the source. Apparently Donkey Kong Taru Taru Adventure has something to do with the Donkey Kong Country TV show according to the shows navigation template. And I couldn't find anything about Mario Kart Racing Deluxe until I randomly found an expansion pack for the board game at a book store that my dad had a gig at. So when it comes to board games, finding info about them at all is difficult. Rykitu

SO. This page has been needing an overhaul for quite some time, as the current to-do tag indicates. As we already split select types of merchandise (for instance, Super Mario 32 Valentines and Super Mario Galaxy 2 Enemy Danglers), this proposal will decide what is allowed to be split and what isn't. I should clarify that I don't intend for this proposal to require everything gets split off immediately (just that it allows them to be in the future), otherwise we'd have this sitting as an unimplemented proposal for the next decade because my god there is a lot of Mario merch. As an additional note, this proposal will likely be split into a group of three because there is a fair bit that needs to be done to this page.

I apologize for any messiness that this proposal may contain; I am writing it at thirty minutes to one in the morning and have not checked to see if we already do some of these things.

Anyway.

• The first things I'd like to discuss are collectible lines, such as Super Mario World Collectible Slamcaps, Super Mario Magic Doodles, maybe theseMedia:SM3DW cat clings.jpg, and these thingsMedia:Colorplush.jpg. Some things like this already have (or have in construction) articles of their own, but I felt that it should be formally stated. As the currently-existing pages show, these can definitely fill out their own articles. Giving these things their own article and covering them as a series/toy line/product line could definitely help rescue them from Gallery Purgatory (which will probably be the subject of proposal II).
• The second thing I'd like to discuss are highly-involved toys or merch, such as theseMedia:Super Mario Fun Fact Coasters.jpg or potentially this depending on what it doesMedia:SMWMusicCan.jpg. As Super Mario World: Mario no Pukapuka Ofuro Land illustrates, sometimes toys, activities, or playsets can have quite the amount of moving parts. These could easily fill their own articles, and, heck, again, splitting these could help everyone understand what they even do. In its current location, I have zero clue what the Music Can even DOES in terms of audio. Stuff like the cards (which I happen to own, making my job slightly easier) could also fill out their own articles, as there's plenty to write about. I feel the same way about playsets, but I know that's a controversial topic [and thus won't include them here].
• Third, I'd like to talk about companies themselves. I've already started doing this with one-off promos for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but I feel that if a company makes enough merch, it should be covered extensively on an article about the company itself as opposed to being crammed into a merch gallery. It would be one thing if the merch galleries were organized by company, but they aren't outside of large-scale lines. For instance, the stuff Epoch has made is spread out across multiple galleries, such as their physical games (which will be split regardless, though are still worthy to use as an example) being shoved in with the toys. As we've decided by this point, physical games are a variety of merch, but they sure aren't toys. I feel that doing this / formally instating this (since many companies have made a crapload of Mario merch) would be very beneficial. This would potentially go for things like Peninsula Vending, Inc. and their tattoos, assuming that they've made a fair bit of merch outside of that. The Mattel article is a pretty good example of how this may look.
  • As a side-note - a half-option, if you will - I feel that merchandise should receive its own infobox akin to that of a video game when it does receive its own article, and the appropriate categories (i.e. Japan-only merchandise). We are a video game wiki, after all; I don't feel this would harm anything, so long as we give merch infoboxes a distinct color to distinguish them from the infoboxes of things we do consider games in one way or another.

#Arend (talk) Toys aren't necessarily games; same goes for collectibles. Unless you view the concept of collecting a game in and of itself, I don't think we really should consider any merch line where you can make a collection out of it as a game. We wouldn't consider commonly collected objects that typically aren't toys at all (e.g. bottle caps, postcard stamps, sea shells, etc.) as games, either, do we?

A toy being more involved or interactive doesn't necessarily make it a game, either, I think (hence I'd be unsure to call LEGO Super Mario a "game"). You can certainly play with it of course, but there aren't any rules or objectives here. I know that may sound hypocritical given games such as Mario Paint, but I feel like it's just a tad different with physical toys.

Or you could just name the options after the things they're about? they did not mean the Support and Oppose sub-options, they meant the headers literally called "Option 1", "Option 2", "Option 3", and "Option 3.5". I feel like calling them just "Option 1", "Option 2", "Option 3", and "Option 3.5" makes it incredibly difficult to identify what they're about, especially when the list detailing said options never even calls them "Option 1", "Option 2", "Option 3", and "Option 3.5" at all. Heck, my mind didn't even register this was a poll proposal at first, since I'm used to think "options" tend to be choices where only one of them can be the outcome, instead of them being little sub-proposals.
When your list of topics to be discussed don't even call them "Option 1", "Option 2", "Option 3", and "Option 3.5", it's best to not leave the poll titles unchanged from "Option 1", "Option 2", "Option 3", and "Option 3.5". Just call them the topic they're about ("Are collectibles games?", "Are interactive toys games?", "Should we make articles on merchandise companies?", "Should we make an infobox for merchandise (lines)?")
