To do this, players must take turns. While a player uses the lever (and makes the submarine move), the other rests. Once the one using the lever gets tired, evidenced by that player slowing down the rate at which he or she can pump the lever, he or she changes positions with the other player. This way, none of the players gets extremely tired and can cooperatively work to get to the goal.

The screen is divided in two. In the upper half, the red team pilots a red-colored Cheep Cheep submarine. The blue team controls a blue Cheep Cheep submarine in the lower half. In the middle of the screen is a small, straight line which shows how far each team is from the goal.

Submarathon is a 2-vs.-2 minigame found in Mario Party 5. The name is a portmanteau of the words "submarine" and "marathon." This is the only minigame in Mario Party 5 in which the song "In Calm Water" plays; said song is a cover version of the Underwater Theme from Super Mario Bros.

Introduction[edit]

The minigame starts with a clam onscreen. It then spits out the red team members in their Cheep Cheep submarine. The screen then splits, showing both teams.

Gameplay[edit]

The minigame consists of two teams of two players, who must race to the finish by riding Cheep Cheep-shaped submarines, one red and the other blue. The upper half of the screen shows the red team, while the lower half shows the blue team, and the divider contains a small straight line that shows how far each team is from the goal. The players must reach the goal by taking turns pumping the lever to accelerate their submarine; if a player gets tired, their movement rate visibly slows down. Players should switch places at appropriate times in order to maintain their submarine's pace and prevent either one from becoming extremely tired, though it is possible to reach the goal quickly without switching at all. The first team across the goal wins. If neither team reaches the goal within five minutes, the minigame ends in a draw.
