Plucking is a move used by Captain Toad and Toadette in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS ports. Performed by pressing
,
,
, or
, it allows either character to activate objects, release items, and defeat enemies. Some objects that can be plucked resist it, requiring the player to pull on them multiple times before the object has a significant reaction. In such cases, the object becomes progressively redder with each pull, then returns to normal as the final pull is performed.
The ability to pluck was born out of a need for a move that Captain Toad could perform on the ground due to his inability to jump.[1] Super Mario Bros. 2 features a similar pulling move, which can be used with grass to likewise obtain vegetables.
Parts of the course that can be plucked are indicated by the presence of a stem or handle. The following elements can be plucked:
| Element | Behavior |
|---|---|
Pluck Patch |
Releases items such as coins, Turnips, Super Mushrooms, Super Pickaxes, and keys. The latter three require the patch to be pulled on three times before the item is released. |
Assist Pluck Patch |
Releases an Invincibility Mushroom |
Piranha Sprout |
Is picked up by Captain Toad or Toadette, enabling it to be tossed like a Turnip |
Mole |
Rewards Captain Toad or Toadette with coins, Super Mushrooms, and Super Pickaxes |
Pull Switch |
Raises one or more portions of the surrounding terrain |
Turnip Cannon |
Rises and enables Captain Toad or Toadette to man the cannon |
Giant Vegetable |
Lifts the vegetable out of the ground, enabling it to be thrown at Wingo. These must be pulled on five times to pick them up. |
Toadette |
Frees Toadette from being stuck headfirst in coins along with the Power Star she holds. She has to be pulled on five times, but does not change color as other objects do. |
The plucking of Turnips can also be seen in LEGO Super Mario, where scanning a Turnip's Action Tag will cause it to be plucked by Mario or Peach.

And that was how we got the idea of him pulling things out of the ground!
