The 'Shroom:Issue 234/Fun Stuff
Director's Notes
Greetings, beautiful 'Shroom readers! Welcome into the September Fun Stuff offices! I was going to have more to say here, and then I got struck with a head cold six hours before upload. And so it goes.
We do have an unfortunate announcement to make, which is that Superchao (talk) is retiring Homicide Activity due to a continued lack of engagement. Always sad to see a section go, but Perch is permitted to come back to the Fun Stuff team whenever he wants to give the premise another shot. It was definitely a neat one, right?
The rest of our Fun Stuff staples are here, including a surprise appearance from Waluigi Time (talk) in someone else's section! And also there's pirates everywhere. Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day, everyone. Fire on the poopdeck and all that
Have an excellent start to your fall, and enjoy the puzzles that await!
Section of the Month
It was a tight race last month, but Ninja Squid (talk) came out on top with his Musical Quiz! Congratulations also go to Waluigi Time (talk) and Sparks (talk) for tying for second place. Be sure to vote for your favorite sections this month!

Anagrams
Written by: BBQ Turtle (talk)
Hiya everyone, welcome to September's edition of Anagrams! This month, I thought it would be fun to sail into some anagrams based on the ships of the Mario franchise. If you want to float any other ideas past me, please feel free to do so on my talk page or in a PM to me on the forums- it would really float my boat! Well, now that we've got everything shipshape, I'll bow out and let you figure out what the hull these anagrams are!
How it works...
Basically, this puzzle consists of solving the anagrams. Each month has a specific theme, which will give you a clue about what sort of words or phrases the anagrams will be. I've also included the boxes that the anagrams will fit into, so you'll be able to tell how many words it will solve to be and how many letters will be in each word, which should give you a hand too. You'll also notice that within each set of boxes, one of the squares is a ? Block. As you solve each anagram, note down the letter which appear on the ? Blocks, and if you can solve all of the anagrams, you'll also get a bonus anagram to solve from completing all of the others. I've included the letter configuration for this one at the bottom too, just to give you an extra helping hand. Best of luck!

Welcome back to Crosswords, everyone! For the first puzzle of the fall season, we'll be falling back to 1996, because this month's puzzle is about Super Mario RPG! You'll need to know the names of key locations, characters and bosses for this month's puzzle. As a note, the names will be for the most part based of what they were in the original SNES release. With that, I bid adieu and will see you next time!
Welcome back to another edition of Picross! This set of picrosses is themed around Mario Kart Tour, one of the more divisive games in the Mario Kart series. As of writing, this game is just a few weeks away from its end of service, and I am sad to see it go. I've been playing it pretty consistently for the past year or so, after not having touched the game for years. I do think there are some merits to it (it's the only Mario Kart game where you can play as Poochy, after all). So, to celebrate the 7th anniversary of Mario Kart Tour, and since the game is shutting down soon, these picrosses are based on various elements from the game. Please enjoy!
For anyone who isn’t already familiar with picross, here’s a tutorial on how to play:
Let’s use this 5x5 picross as an example, and I’ll show my process of solving it step by step, explaining my rationale for every step as I go along.
The obvious first move here is to fill the middle row, denoted with the number “5”. Since this is a 5x5 grid, filling five squares of any row or column would fill every square in the row. (As a general tip, the first move you’ll want to do when solving any picross is to look for rows and columns with the number of columns or rows of the grid, or any rows / columns with a “0” (as that means no squares are filled in).
There are several moves that we can do next, but the one I chose to do next is as pictured above. The second-to-left column has the numbers “1 3”. Each number denoted the number of consecutive squares filled, with there being at least 1 blank square between them. So, using quick math, we can deduce that 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 3 filled squares = 5 squares. Thus, we can confidently fill in the full column.
We can repeat the same for the second-to-right column.
We can apply the same logic to the middle column, i.e. 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square = 5 squares.
Alternatively, since the bottom row has two filled squares with a blank square between them, and is denoted with the number “3”, then that means that there must be three consecutive squares. Thus, the square in between must be filled. The same logic can be applied to the top row.
Next, let’s take a look at the rows. Both the top and bottom rows are now complete, so the rest of the squares in each row can be marked as blank. The same goes for the second-to-bottom row.
We’re almost done now! Let’s take a look at the second-to-top row, which has two unmarked squares. Since the row is denoted as “1 1”, that means there are two single squares with one or more blank squares between them. There are only two unmarked squares here, so these must be filled.
And voilà! We’ve solved the picross and have been rewarded with a mushroom!
Hopefully, this tutorial was helpful. If you’re still a bit confused, the best practice is to actually solve picrosses on your own! A lot of the tips and tricks I showed here come down to intuition and practice. There are more advanced ones, but I’ll leave you to discover those on your own. Here’s just a few strategies you’ll want to keep in mind when solving picrosses:
- Start by filling in numbers corresponding to the amount of rows or columns (or zeroes). For example, for a 10x10 picross, this would not only count rows / columns marked with “10”, but also ones marked with, say, “4 5” or “2 3 3”. This is because you have to account for the blank space of at least one square, and with quick math (4 filled squares + 1 blank + 5 filled = 10; 2 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled = 10), you can deduce the specific square that you should and shouldn’t fill in.
- Always stick to steps that you are 100% certain of. Every strategy I’ve shown in my example is based on elimination and finding squares which I could fill in for certain. Although it may be tempting to take a chance, it could end up being a mistake, and without a mistake-checker of some sort, it can be difficult to figure out where it is, and you might even have to restart.
- Use process of elimination to determine squares which can 100% be filled in. If there’s a certain row whose numbers don’t quite add up to the number of rows or columns, but are pretty close; or you have a lot of crossed out spaces in that row or column, identify every possible solution to that row or column, and determine if there are any filled / unfilled squares in common between all of them. If so, you can 100% fill those in.
- Lastly, while there can be multiple ways to solve a picross, each picross has only one solution. Each of the ways you can solve a picross leads to the same solution. You can try the example picross on your own and experiment with different steps, but you’ll find that the end result is the same.
I hope those tips proved helpful! As I mentioned before, though, the best way to improve is to play some picrosses on your own. Mario's Picross and Mario's Super Picross are a great place to start, and there are numerous other picross games and websites that you can find with a quick Google search.
Lastly, if you want to solve the picrosses from this section, all you need to do is download the images. You can either open them in your image editing program of choice, or you can print them out and solve them with pen and paper. Happy solving!

Ahoy there, 'Shroom readers! In case ye be wonderin' why I be talkin' like this, it ain't because I been spendin' too much time 'round me matey ClawgripFan, it be because this month's issue be settin' sail on Talk Like A Pirate Day! So what better way to get in on the spirit o' things in this month's Hidin' Koopa than to be visitin' Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, a game with lots o' piracy! Five o' these landlubbin' Koopas be tryin' to stowaway on that fine ship, the Gangplank Galleon. Can ye find 'em all and make 'em walk the plank?
Arr, thanks fer playin', matey! Did ye find 'em all?
Pixel Personas
Ahoy mateys! Today be National Talk Like a Pirate Day, and I'm really into the holiday spirit! Are ye prepared to discover these three pirates before they steal yer booty? That be treasure, you know.
New to Pixel Personas? Here's what it's about: Pixel Personas is a game played in three rounds. In each round, I'll show an image of a Super Mario character (this includes enemies), but they're all pixelated! You (the readers) must analyze and identify who these characters are. Each round is tougher than the last, with more lesser-known characters and larger pixels, making it more difficult to tell who it is. After you make your guess, click/tap onhover over the card the image is on to flip it over and reveal the character!
Aye, this be easier without an eyepatch. Prepare to set sail!

Round 3
YAHARR! That be the spirit! Ye have a fine eye there. Thanks for playing, and be sure to return in October! Arrrr!
Riddle Moves
Written by: Sentient freedom (talk)
Hi, everyone! The school days are back and most people are going back to studying. However, that won't stop me from dishing out new riddles to all of you, so here's another.
How it works:
Below will be a riddle relating to a random Pokémon move; the chosen move will not be a Z-Move, a Max move, any of the moves that are exclusive to the Starmobiles, or any of the two Tera moves. What you have to do is use the information provided by the riddle to piece together what the move may be. I will tell you the move's type, so you can think about it a bit more. Anyway, enough talking! Here's the riddle, let's see how sharp your knowledge is!
Type: Grass
"I drop an object on the target that breaks its defenses. If an odd force takes effect, I will get stronger. What am I?"
It replicates how Isaac Newton discovered a force.
Dropping something on one someone's head is really painful, it could be anything.
It's a Grass-type move, so what could the object in particular be?
Grav Apple
So, how did you do? Did you manage to get it right? Well, regardless, thanks for playing, and I will see you next month to test your move knowledge again.
Welcome to the September 2026 issue of Hex Puzzle! It's now one year since the first Hex Puzzle section (awesome!, with seven more sections since. Now, like usual, let's get started!
4D 61 72 69 6F 20 61 6E 64 20 4C 75 69 67 69 is "Mario and Luigi" or 53 6F 6E 69 63 20 61 6E 64 20 54 61 69 6C 73 is "Sonic and Tails". With these together, you can guess that 4D is a capital M.

You will begin each case at the scene of the crime, and you will be given three clues from passerby as to where the next hot spot is and what game it’s from. Using your knowledge of Mario games and the Super Mario Wiki, figure out where the crook is and go track them down! There are four locations each round: the crime scene (1) at the start, two locations (2 and 3) with clues, and the hideout for the crook of the month (4). Answers for locations will be given with the corresponding round, for example, the clues from the crime scene will lead you to location 2, and once you open the spoiler bubbles for location 2, you will be given the correct answer. You can open the clues for each location in any order you’d like, but be careful! You may encounter an incorrect clue that could throw you off the case!
Clues offered will give you a hint either about the next location or the game it’s in. Unlike a regular Carmen Sandiego game, you do not have to collect information about the crook you are tracking down.
Challenge round (optional):
-Find all locations and games correctly in two minutes or less
-Find all locations and games correctly without using the rest of the Wiki for help
"Gumshoe, we've got a power-up problem! Mario has just called- someone broke into his special Power-Up Stash and made off with his best Cape Feather! The Cape Feather was introduced in Super Mario World. It gave Mario the ability to fly through the air and perform ground pound-like maneuvers to attack enemies with. It made for some fast-paced, high-flying gameplay, and players loved it. It has seen only a few appearances since then, but this little feather means a lot to Mario, and he asked for you by name to head up this investigation. Now, we have reason to believe our crook isn't going to be using the power-up to get away- mostly that it would be a waste of a power-up! If our thief is working with Carmen, she wouldn't be pleased if they left empty-handed, so they will probably be moving around on foot. In fact, Mario has a trail of footprints leading away from his house that he can't identify as his own! Put your nose to the ground and get going, gumshoe!"

HIDEOUT ANSWER:
The Classroom from Mario Strikers Charged
"You did it, gumshoe! Our team followed your instructions, and we found our crook trapped in the tutorial, learning how to participate in Strikers Charged football. Now, learning is an admirable goal, but not when your slate isn't clean! When we explained our circumstances, the instructors were more than happy to put him in our permanent detention so he could truly learn his lesson. He's already spilling his secrets, so we'll be listening carefully to everything he has to say to see if any of it will be of use to us. Mario is very impressed with your quick work as well! He's sent over a Super Leaf for you to try out on top of your regular retainer fee, and if you'd like to stay behind and practice in the safety of The Classroom here, we'll leave a driver here for you to bring you back to HQ when you're ready. Just don't slack on your write-up of this case! We'll be in touch for your next mission assignment."

Hello there, 'Shroom readers! Expecting Ninja Squid? TOO BAD. WALUIGI TIME! That's right, I've taken over Musical Quiz! Well, actually, I'm just filling in while NS is out of the office... But it's more fun to pretend there was a mutiny or something. I'll be leaving a bunch of Super Arrow merch on his desk though!
Speaking of mutiny, it's Talk Like A Pirate Day! I'm not actually going to do it again because I already did that back in Hiding Koopa, which you totally read already (right??), but I will be giving you some pirate-themed tunes this month! Can you guess which games they originated from?
