The 'Shroom:Issue 233/Fun Stuff
Director's Notes
Greetings, beautiful 'Shroom readers! Welcome into our August edition of Fun Stuff, where we're winding down on summer festivities and looking ahead towards the end of the year. To recycle the same bit of advertising as everyone else: the Awards Ceremony has come and pass, and if you haven't already, you can give it a read right now on the forums! Make sure to check out the presentations and the winners of our annual awards polls. Our community puts its collective heart and sweat into making the ceremony happen, and the result this year is just as remarkable as ever.
I'll keep things briefer because the Ceremony worded me out for the month! Plenty of Fun Stuff staples await you for reading, so continue on, and we'll see you come September.
Section of the Month
Congratulations to Ninja Squid (talk) for another first-place win with his Musical Quiz! Extra kudos also go to Waluigi Time (talk) and Shoey (talk) for respective second and third place wins. Be sure to vote for your favorite sections this month!

Homicide Activity
Hello, 'Shroom readers! Welcome to another edition of Homicide Activity, and I hope you know that you must kill! To quote myself, Homicide Activity is best thought of as a cross between a single-player version of the forum game known as Killing Game and a forum game version of the Hitman series of games. Each month, your fabulous host (that's me!) presents a framework where you send in a single attempt to kill a designated target without getting caught in the middle of it. Next issue contains the attempts and a new scenario. You, the readers, can vote on which one is the best, and we'll present the winner in the issue after that!
Ground rules are as follows:
- You can't kill anyone except the target. NPCs can be removed in nonlethal ways if you can set it up, which leads into point 2...
- Illegal activity getting spotted, such as attacking people in plain view or stealing things it's suspicious to pick up, causes the attempt to fail!
- Clarifying questions are welcome and encouraged, and should be asked in the relevant forum thread. Attempts should be PMed directly to me on the forum.
Let's kick it off with have our results for the scenario from three months ago! By popular consensus, the preferred murderous scheme was Submission #2 - Employees Only, by Salmancer. Congratulations on your successfully murderous intentions! I'd also like to give shoutouts to Roserade for Submission #1 - Check Your Baggage, and Waluigi Time for Submission #3 - Spaghetti Flambe. Thank you both for playing!
Onto two months ago! I challenged you to clean out a warehouse of its supervisor. Now, I only got one submission across the two months, so I'd like to apologize for not picking something that clicked with people. If I'm making these too difficult, or if people would just prefer two months to plan with, go ahead and tell me. I'd rather we all have fun than I just force through what I have. Anyway, here's the one I did have! Shoutouts to Sparks for his devious work!
Submission #1
My first task will be to pick up a few small nuts and bolts on the ground and put them in a pocket. I will then make my way to the employee break room to make myself a cup of coffee. Afterwards, I'll return to the warehouse and find a corner where nobody is. I will then sneakily put in the coffee the bolts I picked up earlier. I'll then head into the center of the warehouse and purposely pick up some tools and throw them to the floor. The impact sounds they make will be so loud that the other workers will stop to look at me, giving their attention to me. This will hopefully also alert the supervisor, who'll question me and bring me to his small office. Once I'm there, I will apologize and give him the cup of coffee I made. When he drinks it, he won't be able to feel the bolts due to their small size. He will hopefully get life-threatening pain hours later, after he goes off shift. This way, he'll still be alive at the warehouse and die when he's elsewhere. Once he leaves the warehouse, I'll head home as well.
For obvious reasons, no poll this month.
Now, for this month: You are on a golf course, here to kill a member of a golf team. He's slowly playing through the course in a group of four, and they're the last team for the day on the course. A few other people are cleaning up on the golf course a few holes behind them, moving at about the same pace. The golf course itself is at the edge of town, bordering a river on one side. How do you commit your Homicide here?
Let's give it a shot and make this one a success!
Anagrams
Written by: BBQ Turtle (talk)
OK, so unlike the subjects of what I'm about to say, no prizes for you for guessing what I'm about to say next- have you checked out the Awards? Because, as much as we always say it, we hit some new highs this year, and it would be a real shame for you to miss out on all that wonderfulness! And while you're over on the Boards, feel free to send me a theme suggestion or an anagram I could use- and sending it over here on my talk page works too! Now, as for this month's theme, I think we've all waited long enough for the Mario Kart World edition, so here it is! I'll let you race into the Anagrams after you've done a lap of the awards board- it's the best course of action!
How it works...
Basically, this puzzle consists of solving the anagrams. Each month has a specific theme, which will give you a clue about what sort of words or phrases the anagrams will be. I've also included the boxes that the anagrams will fit into, so you'll be able to tell how many words it will solve to be and how many letters will be in each word, which should give you a hand too. You'll also notice that within each set of boxes, one of the squares is a ? Block. As you solve each anagram, note down the letter which appear on the ? Blocks, and if you can solve all of the anagrams, you'll also get a bonus anagram to solve from completing all of the others. I've included the letter configuration for this one at the bottom too, just to give you an extra helping hand. Best of luck!
1. SPROCKET PAD
2. TRUNK COOK OUT
3. DISPUTE A MACH
4. BITTER VERB SIR
5. ATROCIOUS CRIB RIM

7. CHICK RUNG ART
8. LIMP SOUTHWEST MIST
9. UPTURN THEME

Happy August everyone, and welcome to another edition of Crosswords! This month's issue will be focusing on all the unique and wonderful parts from Super Mario Bros. Wonder, ranging from enemies to locations and much more! With that, let the wonder of your mind take you away and enjoy all the twists and turns this puzzle has to offer!
Welcome back to Picross! It's just a week or so after the Mario Awards as of writing (go check out the Awards presentations if you haven't already), so this issue of Picross is pretty last-minute. This time around, I've themed the picrosses after Panel de Pon, a game which I quite enjoy picking up from time to time. Fittingly enough, I actually got into Panel de Pon thanks to the Mario Awards a few years ago. Anyway, enjoy the picrosses!
For anyone who isn’t already familiar with picross, here’s a tutorial on how to play:
Let’s use this 5x5 picross as an example, and I’ll show my process of solving it step by step, explaining my rationale for every step as I go along.
The obvious first move here is to fill the middle row, denoted with the number “5”. Since this is a 5x5 grid, filling five squares of any row or column would fill every square in the row. (As a general tip, the first move you’ll want to do when solving any picross is to look for rows and columns with the number of columns or rows of the grid, or any rows / columns with a “0” (as that means no squares are filled in).
There are several moves that we can do next, but the one I chose to do next is as pictured above. The second-to-left column has the numbers “1 3”. Each number denoted the number of consecutive squares filled, with there being at least 1 blank square between them. So, using quick math, we can deduce that 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 3 filled squares = 5 squares. Thus, we can confidently fill in the full column.
We can repeat the same for the second-to-right column.
We can apply the same logic to the middle column, i.e. 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square = 5 squares.
Alternatively, since the bottom row has two filled squares with a blank square between them, and is denoted with the number “3”, then that means that there must be three consecutive squares. Thus, the square in between must be filled. The same logic can be applied to the top row.
Next, let’s take a look at the rows. Both the top and bottom rows are now complete, so the rest of the squares in each row can be marked as blank. The same goes for the second-to-bottom row.
We’re almost done now! Let’s take a look at the second-to-top row, which has two unmarked squares. Since the row is denoted as “1 1”, that means there are two single squares with one or more blank squares between them. There are only two unmarked squares here, so these must be filled.
And voilà! We’ve solved the picross and have been rewarded with a mushroom!
Hopefully, this tutorial was helpful. If you’re still a bit confused, the best practice is to actually solve picrosses on your own! A lot of the tips and tricks I showed here come down to intuition and practice. There are more advanced ones, but I’ll leave you to discover those on your own. Here’s just a few strategies you’ll want to keep in mind when solving picrosses:
- Start by filling in numbers corresponding to the amount of rows or columns (or zeroes). For example, for a 10x10 picross, this would not only count rows / columns marked with “10”, but also ones marked with, say, “4 5” or “2 3 3”. This is because you have to account for the blank space of at least one square, and with quick math (4 filled squares + 1 blank + 5 filled = 10; 2 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled = 10), you can deduce the specific square that you should and shouldn’t fill in.
- Always stick to steps that you are 100% certain of. Every strategy I’ve shown in my example is based on elimination and finding squares which I could fill in for certain. Although it may be tempting to take a chance, it could end up being a mistake, and without a mistake-checker of some sort, it can be difficult to figure out where it is, and you might even have to restart.
- Use process of elimination to determine squares which can 100% be filled in. If there’s a certain row whose numbers don’t quite add up to the number of rows or columns, but are pretty close; or you have a lot of crossed out spaces in that row or column, identify every possible solution to that row or column, and determine if there are any filled / unfilled squares in common between all of them. If so, you can 100% fill those in.
- Lastly, while there can be multiple ways to solve a picross, each picross has only one solution. Each of the ways you can solve a picross leads to the same solution. You can try the example picross on your own and experiment with different steps, but you’ll find that the end result is the same.
I hope those tips proved helpful! As I mentioned before, though, the best way to improve is to play some picrosses on your own. Mario's Picross and Mario's Super Picross are a great place to start, and there are numerous other picross games and websites that you can find with a quick Google search.
Lastly, if you want to solve the picrosses from this section, all you need to do is download the images. You can either open them in your image editing program of choice, or you can print them out and solve them with pen and paper. Happy solving!

Hiding Koopa
Written by: Waluigi Time (talk)
Hello there, 'Shroom readers! Welcome back to Hiding Koopa. A new game with the funny squids came out recently, and to be honest I don't really know much about it, but Ninja Squid loves this series so shoutout to him and also GoldGal. You probably know how this goes, there's five Koopas hidden in this piece of artwork from Splatoon Raiders. Good luck!
Booyah! Thanks for playing! Did you find them all?
Pixel Personas
Hi! That Awards show was quite a spectacle wasn't it? Shame it concluded, but there'll be another one next August! In the meantime, treat yourself to another issue of Pixel Personas.
New to Pixel Personas? Here's what it's about: Pixel Personas is a game played in three rounds. In each round, I'll show an image of a Super Mario character (this includes enemies), but they're all pixelated! You (the readers) must analyze and identify who these characters are. Each round is tougher than the last, with more lesser-known characters and larger pixels, making it more difficult to tell who it is. After you make your guess, click/tap onhover over the card the image is on to flip it over and reveal the character!
No particular theme this month. You may have at it!
Round 1
Round 2
Round 3
Congratulations! Thanks for playing, and see you in September!
Connections
Greetings, beautiful 'Shroom readers! Welcome back to another edition of Connections! Some of you might be back to school shortly, so consider this a warm-up for your brain! That is, if you don't get schooled yourself!
How it works:
Below is a table of sixteen different words, all of them with some sort of connection to the Mario series. These words correlate in sets of four, and it's up to you to figure out which words belong to a set! Work through the grid and decide which words are connected. Once you think you have the answer, check against the provided answers. If you get stuck along the way, feel free to utilize the clues. There's only one correct answer, so be on the lookout for words that feel like they might fit in more than one category. Good luck!
| Peel | Shadow | Wario | Cow |
| Snow | Goomba | Corn | Bean |
| Oil | Hell | Cheese | Dark |
| Honey | Lower | Tar | Banana |
Start with "Wario"
Hope this puzzle isn't a royal pain!
How's your mind? Not spinning yet, is it?
- Wario, Snow, Cheese, Dark: ___ Land
- Shadow, Bean, Honey, Banana: names of queens in the broader Mario franchise
- Peel, Cow, Goomba, Oil: obstacles that make you spin out in Mario Kart
- Corn, Hell, Lower, Tar: power-up items missing their first letter (Acorn, Shell, Flower, Star)
How did you do? Did you figure out the connections? Thanks for playing!
Riddle Moves
Written by: Sentient freedom (talk)
Hi everyone! I am in a different country but it actually won't be that long until I'm back, so until then, more riddles!
How it works:
Below will be a riddle relating to a random Pokémon move; the chosen move will not be a Z-Move, a Max move, any of the moves that are exclusive to the Starmobiles, or any of the two Tera moves. What you have to do is use the information provided by the riddle to piece together what the move may be. I will tell you the move's type, so you can think about it a bit more. Anyway, enough talking! Here's the riddle, let's see how sharp your knowledge is!
Type: Steel
"I launch theoretical blades of energy at my foes, striking them twice. Since they are almost unseeable, they are impossible to dodge. What am I?"
These blades are based on a theoretical particle that is said to move faster than light.
Very few Steel-type moves hit multiple times with only three, and all of them are signature moves.
I'm just saying, an unmissable, multi-strike move? That's a very rare thing to see, unless you know who wears the crown.
Tachyon Cutter
So, how did you do? Did you manage to get it right? Well, regardless, thanks for playing, and I will see you next month to test your move knowledge again.
Hello to the August issue of Hex Puzzle (it's back again)! Let's get started!
4D 61 72 69 6F 20 61 6E 64 20 4C 75 69 67 69 is "Mario and Luigi" or 53 6F 6E 69 63 20 61 6E 64 20 54 61 69 6C 73 is "Sonic and Tails". With these together, you can guess that 4D is a capital M.

To answer that, I suppose we ought to start with a different question! Where have we been?
Since we last gathered here, we've taken our hard-edged brushes in hand and used them to scale to new heights. We've taken on unique and sometimes chaotic challenges, and we've weathered sabotages in teams of two. We've looked at art made by another, trying to decipher its meaning in teams as we raced to unlock the secrets of Forgotten Isle. We've gone on a ghost hunt, and we've been hunted by haunts in a sprawling complex built from scattered pieces of the past. (From Community Awards XIX opening)

"Fail Awards? You want to talk about the real Fail Awards? It's the sad things you whippersnappers think pass for an award these days! Favorite Extra Mode? Back in my day, there was no such thing as extra modes! We just had the main game, and that's all we needed! Have you seen how long it takes these young'uns to make one game these days? It's a very special occasion when a project hits two decades old. When that project is powered by a hodgepodge assortment of fans creating out of pure passion and sense of community, it becomes even more special. Yes, long gone are those humble days of 2007, where polls hardly capped 50 votes and bloom filters were abundant... yet here we remain, working together, celebrating together. (From Fail Mario Awards XX opening)
Did you decode the texts for August? As always, thanks for playing!! And (MAYBE) see you all for the next Fun Stuff issue!
Where in the Marioverse is Carmen Sandiego?
Each issue, you will be given a case to solve and clues to use to help you find the solution! Use your Mario knowledge to crack the case!
You will begin each case at the scene of the crime, and you will be given three clues from passerby as to where the next hot spot is and what game it’s from. Using your knowledge of Mario games and the Super Mario Wiki, figure out where the crook is and go track them down! There are four locations each round: the crime scene (1) at the start, two locations (2 and 3) with clues, and the hideout for the crook of the month (4). Answers for locations will be given with the corresponding round, for example, the clues from the crime scene will lead you to location 2, and once you open the spoiler bubbles for location 2, you will be given the correct answer. You can open the clues for each location in any order you’d like, but be careful! You may encounter an incorrect clue that could throw you off the case!
Clues offered will give you a hint either about the next location or the game it’s in. Unlike a regular Carmen Sandiego game, you do not have to collect information about the crook you are tracking down.
Challenge round (optional):
-Find all locations and games correctly in two minutes or less
-Find all locations and games correctly without using the rest of the Wiki for help
"We've got another case of stolen sports equipment for you, gumshoe! This time, it's Pauline, reporting that her Fever locker was broken into- and we mean, the door was ripped right off the locker in order to get at the Fever Rackets inside! We've already seen Carmen try to steal Fever Rackets in the past, so it's odd that she is sending someone to try their hand at it again. Why Pauline, you ask? Her locker is closest to the door- an easy escape route for a thief that had just made a real racket ripping a locker door off its hinges! Our suspect might not be the sharpest tool in the shed this time. It looks like he left a set of extra-large footprints for you to follow, so get on that trail and track down those rackets!"

"An ace performance from you, gumshoe! Just what I like to see! It was not the brightest idea to run away from the law down a cave, but our crook did it- and when he hit a dead end, we were right behind him to nab him, thanks to your guidance. We brought in extra staff to subdue him, and he's safely contained in a cell, ready for questioning. I'm interested to hear what he decides to tell us. Surely Carmen wouldn't place too much stock in a goon that makes blunders like this, no? Well, in any case, Pauline has been reunited with her rackets and is ready to get back out on the court! She's sent ahead your fee and a small reward for speedy service. Another case closed, gumshoe! Time to return to HQ and rest up for your next case!"
