The 'Shroom:Issue 230/Fun Stuff
Director's Notes
Greetings, beautiful 'Shroom readers! Welcome into the Fun Stuff office, though uh, do mind your step... Yes, a layer of fog has descended over the place. Makes it hard for our writers to see what they're writing, I'll admit, but the atmosphere it generates is quite sublime. The kind of air you wander through while dodging monsters and contemplating your divorce...
What, you want me to clear it out? Ask someone else, I can't learn Defog!
Of course, this special weather comes courtesy of our Lakituthequick (talk) celebration, without whom this page, and countless other pages and projects, could not exist. I could gush about LTQ's presence in this community at length, as many others have in this issue. To lighten the upload size of this 'Shroom, though, I'll keep it brief: LTQ is an unbelievably valuable light in this community, and his contributions are what allow to do, frankly, anything. He is a truly inventive wizard, and I'm proud to work alongside him in our myriad of projects. Thank you for all that you do, LTQ, and happy 100. Must make you feel so old, huh *ignoring my 100th issue shortly around the corner*
To celebrate his work, most of our Fun Stuff sections this month relate to Lakitus, clouds, or the greater skies. 13 sections for you to enjoy, all written by a different contributor! That's truly something special. This includes Shoey (talk), who's back from hiatus! He's opted to retire his Word Search section, but thankfully, he's happy to give you all the Trivia you could desire.
Read on, everyone, and enjoy everything that our May Fun Stuff has in store for you.
Section of the Month
Congratulations to Ninja Squid (talk) for a dominant first place finish! Additional kudos go to Waluigi Time (talk) and Sparks (talk) for their joint second place. See a section you especially like this month? Make sure to give it a vote!

Homicide Activity
Hello, 'Shroom readers! Welcome to another edition of Homicide Activity, that section all about homicidal activities! To quote myself from last month, Homicide Activity is best thought of as a cross between a single-player version of the forum game known as Killing Game and a forum game version of the Hitman series of games. Each month, your fabulous host (that's me!) presents a framework where you send in a single attempt to kill a designated target without getting caught in the middle of it. Four days before the next issue, I lock attempts; then, next issue contains the attempts and a new scenario. You, the readers, can vote on which one is the best, and we'll present the winner in the issue after that!
Ground rules are as follows:
- You can't kill anyone except the target. NPCs can be removed in nonlethal ways if you can set it up, which leads into point 2...
- Illegal activity getting spotted, such as attacking people in plain view or stealing things it's suspicious to pick up, causes the attempt to fail!
- Clarifying questions are welcome and encouraged, and should be asked in the relevant forum thread. Attempts should be PMed directly to me on the forum.
First off, let's look at last month's scenario and the submissions for it!
Submission #1
Prerequisite: wear an unusually high number of layers. Like, maybe a big coat and three shirts.
Walk to train car 4, sneak one of the plates from a table under my shirt. The layers I am wearing will keep the staff from noticing the plate while it is on my person. This requires some sleight of hand, but since it's only one plate it's probably possible with the right opportunity rather than needing a full on distraction.
Walk to train car 5, spread a rumor that an event will occur in train car 4 momentarily. Explain that waitstaff are cleaning car 4 in preparation for this event. This will get the passengers in train car 5 to go to train car 4, but hopefully the businessman doesn't leave because they have important work to do.
Once all non-businessman passengers are off train car 5, walk outside and disconnect train car 4 from train car 5. Then flee back inside train car 5.
Attack the business man with the smuggled plate. Hopefully it, plus the shards it shatters into when first swung, is enough to overpower him.
(Optional) Swap clothes with the now dead businessman. Skip doing this if there's heat on me at the exact moment, but in the long run this could benefit us by tricking initial investigations of the crime onto the businessman
This is going to hurt, but jump out of the back of train car 5, tuck and roll, get back up, and escape into the countryside. There's no way the train could possibly stop anywhere near the current location of train car 5 after it was disconnected, so this should be a fairly clean escape minus the immense pain. Alternatively, I could instead escape through the door that formerly connected. train car 4 to train car 5, as the door in the back of train car 5 might be locked from public use.
Submission #2
Starting in the second car, I'll head to the Dining Car to grab an amount of napkins or a roll of paper towel, as well as a glass of water. If anyone asks what I'm doing, I'll explain that I spilled something. Then, I'll head to the fifth car bathroom and stuff as many of the napkins and paper towels down the toilet as possible to flood it. As the toilet floods, I will also dump soap on the floor, making it slippery. I'll feign panic at the flooding and run out to hit the emergency button to call staff to clean it up.
When staff arrive with presumably a cleaning cart, I'll explain that I tried to flush but it just flooded on me. Presumably only one guy will stay to clean up, and when he does, I will enter the bathroom behind him and shove him towards the toilet, hopefully making him slip on the soapy floor and hit his head, knocking him out. I'll change into his outfit and put on gloves and a protective face mask from the cleaning cart, exiting and dropping a wet floor sign and out of order sign by the door so no one goes inside and finds him KO'd. Before I leave, I will fill the bottom of the glass with dangerous bleach and hide it in the cart. I'll take the guy's keys and lock the door behind me from the outside so no one finds him.
With my new disguise hiding my face somewhat and making me appear as a staff member, I will enter the fourth car and prepare some alcoholic drinks in the Kitchen - preferably drinks with vodka, which is clear like the bleach. While doing so, I will use the bleach glass from the cleaning cart to prepare one of the drinks. When they are finished, I will bring the drinks on a dining cart to the fifth car, where I will apologize to all passengers for the bathroom disturbance and offer them the free cocktails on behalf of the train company as an apology for the incident with the bathroom disturbing them.
I will give normal drinks to everyone else, but the victim gets the bleach drink. This should kill them.
Once I am done handing out the drinks, I will enter the out-of-order bathroom and dress the nude and KO'd staff member back in his own clothes, making it appear as though he simply slipped and knocked himself out. I'll return to my seat afterwards and ride out the rest of the train.
Submission #3
Through some distant means, I'm going to put in a request for a meal to be brought up to business car five in particular that isn't on the menu. This should cause one of the dining car employees to go up front and check in with the supposed order-ee. Because the staffing in the fourth car is sparse, with the rest of them cleaning and the coast much more clear, I'll slip into an employee side room and tuck on an apron and other attire that the chefs are wearing. When I step back out, I'll keep my head down to avoid detection, and brew up a quick coffee for our unfortunate businessman. When it's done, I'll take some of the leftover scalding oil from their cleaning efforts and slip it into the coffee. Moving up to train car five, I'll offer the coffee to the businessman as a complimentary service, and hurry along before he inevitably takes his gulp - and experiences several internal burns that lead to his demise.
Three excellent murderous schemes. But only one of them can be the winner in the court of popular opinion! Here's the poll in question - go ahead and vote. Next month, we'll reveal who submitted which kill, and which one received the most votes.
Now, for this month: You are in a large commercial airport. Your target is a woman in a huge fur coat, who will be leaving on a flight in thirty minutes. She is currently eating at a restaurant in the same terminal, and will then move to the gate ten minutes from now. You do not have a ticket for the flight she is leaving on, but you do have a ticket to another flight heading to a different destination. How do you commit your Homicide here?
Have fun crafting your attempts, I'm eager to receive them!
Anagrams
Written by: BBQ Turtle (talk)
Hello everyone, welcome to this month's very special edition of the 'Shroom! As you should already know by now, we are celebrating our very talented web manager, Lakituthequick! He does an amazing job around here, helping create and manage all sorts of technical features, many of which keep the 'Shroom itself running- even our updated look for the anagrams section is masterminded by him! So what better way to celebrate than with something he works with- both figuratively and literally- clouds! Or rather cloudy places, because it lent itself slightly better to an Anagram theme. I'm always open to hearing other suggestions for themes for upcoming issues, so feel free to send them to me on my talk page or in a PM to me on the forums, and any other Mario-related anagrams that I could potentially work into a future theme. So thanks again LTQ, your work puts us on cloud nine, and it's time for the rest of you to uncover the answers to these anagrams!
How it works...
Basically, this puzzle consists of solving the anagrams. Each month has a specific theme, which will give you a clue about what sort of words or phrases the anagrams will be. I've also included the boxes that the anagrams will fit into, so you'll be able to tell how many words it will solve to be and how many letters will be in each word, which should give you a hand too. You'll also notice that within each set of boxes, one of the squares is a ? Block. As you solve each anagram, note down the letter which appear on the ? Blocks, and if you can solve all of the anagrams, you'll also get a bonus anagram to solve from completing all of the others. I've included the letter configuration for this one at the bottom too, just to give you an extra helping hand. Best of luck!

Hello again, everyone, and welcome to Crosswords. In this issue, to celebrate Lakituthequick's 100th anniversary, we'll be taking to the skies and getting our head in the clouds as that'll be the theme of this puzzle! All your answers today will be about clouds! Make sure to give your well wishes to Lakituthequick, and until next time, I'm MarioMorty, peace out!
Welcome back to Picross! This issue of The 'Shroom is a special one, as it is Lakituthequick (talk)'s 100th issue as Website Manager! That's, like, 8 years! Congrats! To commemorate this auspicious occasion, this issue is sky-themed, and so these picrosses are as well. So without further ado, let's dive right into them!
...
Or, in this case, I should say - let's soar into them. Eh, that doesn't work as well. Anyway...
For anyone who isn’t already familiar with picross, here’s a tutorial on how to play:
Let’s use this 5x5 picross as an example, and I’ll show my process of solving it step by step, explaining my rationale for every step as I go along.
The obvious first move here is to fill the middle row, denoted with the number “5”. Since this is a 5x5 grid, filling five squares of any row or column would fill every square in the row. (As a general tip, the first move you’ll want to do when solving any picross is to look for rows and columns with the number of columns or rows of the grid, or any rows / columns with a “0” (as that means no squares are filled in).
There are several moves that we can do next, but the one I chose to do next is as pictured above. The second-to-left column has the numbers “1 3”. Each number denoted the number of consecutive squares filled, with there being at least 1 blank square between them. So, using quick math, we can deduce that 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 3 filled squares = 5 squares. Thus, we can confidently fill in the full column.
We can repeat the same for the second-to-right column.
We can apply the same logic to the middle column, i.e. 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square = 5 squares.
Alternatively, since the bottom row has two filled squares with a blank square between them, and is denoted with the number “3”, then that means that there must be three consecutive squares. Thus, the square in between must be filled. The same logic can be applied to the top row.
Next, let’s take a look at the rows. Both the top and bottom rows are now complete, so the rest of the squares in each row can be marked as blank. The same goes for the second-to-bottom row.
We’re almost done now! Let’s take a look at the second-to-top row, which has two unmarked squares. Since the row is denoted as “1 1”, that means there are two single squares with one or more blank squares between them. There are only two unmarked squares here, so these must be filled.
And voilà! We’ve solved the picross and have been rewarded with a mushroom!
Hopefully, this tutorial was helpful. If you’re still a bit confused, the best practice is to actually solve picrosses on your own! A lot of the tips and tricks I showed here come down to intuition and practice. There are more advanced ones, but I’ll leave you to discover those on your own. Here’s just a few strategies you’ll want to keep in mind when solving picrosses:
- Start by filling in numbers corresponding to the amount of rows or columns (or zeroes). For example, for a 10x10 picross, this would not only count rows / columns marked with “10”, but also ones marked with, say, “4 5” or “2 3 3”. This is because you have to account for the blank space of at least one square, and with quick math (4 filled squares + 1 blank + 5 filled = 10; 2 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled = 10), you can deduce the specific square that you should and shouldn’t fill in.
- Always stick to steps that you are 100% certain of. Every strategy I’ve shown in my example is based on elimination and finding squares which I could fill in for certain. Although it may be tempting to take a chance, it could end up being a mistake, and without a mistake-checker of some sort, it can be difficult to figure out where it is, and you might even have to restart.
- Use process of elimination to determine squares which can 100% be filled in. If there’s a certain row whose numbers don’t quite add up to the number of rows or columns, but are pretty close; or you have a lot of crossed out spaces in that row or column, identify every possible solution to that row or column, and determine if there are any filled / unfilled squares in common between all of them. If so, you can 100% fill those in.
- Lastly, while there can be multiple ways to solve a picross, each picross has only one solution. Each of the ways you can solve a picross leads to the same solution. You can try the example picross on your own and experiment with different steps, but you’ll find that the end result is the same.
I hope those tips proved helpful! As I mentioned before, though, the best way to improve is to play some picrosses on your own. Mario's Picross and Mario's Super Picross are a great place to start, and there are numerous other picross games and websites that you can find with a quick Google search.
Lastly, if you want to solve the picrosses from this section, all you need to do is download the images. You can either open them in your image editing program of choice, or you can print them out and solve them with pen and paper. Happy solving!

Hiding Koopa
Written by: Waluigi Time (talk)
Hello there, 'Shroom readers! Welcome back to Hiding Koopa. For our sky theme, I've decided to touch on a franchise I've somehow skipped in my entire time making this section, and use artwork from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky! It's got the word sky in it! Doesn't really look like they're in the sky, but more of the image is taken up by sky than ground, so we'll call it close enough. The Koopas have become Paratroopas (you can't see their wings so you'll just have to trust me on this) and decided to fly off and hide in this artwork, so you'll have to track down all five of them. Good luck!
Thanks for playing! Did you find them all?
Pixel Personas
Howdy! I'm sure you're ready for May's edition of Pixel Personas, arentcha? This is a special edition of Pixel Personas because it's to celebrate Lakituthequick (talk)'s incredible achievement for sticking with The 'Shroom for so long!
New to Pixel Personas? Here's what it's about: Pixel Personas is a game played in three rounds. In each round, I'll show an image of a Super Mario character (this includes enemies), but they're all pixelated! You (the readers) must analyze and identify who these characters are. Each round is tougher than the last, with more lesser-known characters and larger pixels, making it more difficult to tell who it is. After you make your guess, click/tap onhover over the card the image is on to flip it over and reveal the character!
We'll be looking at the sky this time! These subjects are known for being airborne. Ready to begin? Go for it!
Round 1
Round 2
Round 3
You flew high! Nice going, and I'll see you in June for another round of Pixel Personas.
Connections
Greetings, beautiful 'Shroom readers! Welcome back to another edition of Connections! All of this fog that's rolled into the office has obscured all of my precious connections... Let's dissipate that fog together, shall we?
How it works:
Below is a table of sixteen different words, all of them with some sort of connection to the Mario series. These words correlate in sets of four, and it's up to you to figure out which words belong to a set! Work through the grid and decide which words are connected. Once you think you have the answer, check against the provided answers. If you get stuck along the way, feel free to utilize the clues. There's only one correct answer, so be on the lookout for words that feel like they might fit in more than one category. Good luck!
| Blaster | Hammer | Tree | Mushroom |
| Wand | Palm | Cloud | Shell |
| Scamper | Mega Mushroom | Flowers | Lightning |
| Block | Driftwood | Stormy | Rings |
Start with "Driftwood"
Ah, I won't Bully you about needing a hint... Some might call you Cheatsy though...
You're racing ahead of this puzzle! Weeeeeee!!
- Driftwood, Palm, Scamper, Stormy: ___ Shore(s)
- Blaster, Hammer, Wand, Rings: weapons utilized by Koopalings
- Mushroom, Shell, Mega Mushroom, Lightning: items found in Mario Kart Wii
- Tree, Cloud, Flowers, Block: environmental elements that might be hiding coins
How did you do? Did you figure out the connections? Thanks for playing!
Riddle Moves
Written by: Sentient freedom (talk)
Hello once again 'Shroom readers. Honestly I'm done bottling it all up, as a 17-year old autistic college student, I have dedicated most of my life to work, and while the summer holidays will come soon, before all that, it was torture for me, I was... drained and just felt empty without being here. I was just doing nothing, hoping that one day I would come back. I am back now but all those missed opportunities caused me to get a sense of guilt, so to make it up to all of you I'll do something when summer comes. For now, let's get back into the riddles, shall we?
How it works:
Below will be a riddle relating to a random Pokémon move; the chosen move will not be a Z-Move, a Max move, any of the moves that are exclusive to the Starmobiles, or any of the two Tera moves. What you have to do is use the information provided by the riddle to piece together what the move may be. I will tell you the move's type, so you can think about it a bit more. Anyway, enough talking! Here's the riddle: let's see how sharp your knowledge is!
Type: Water
"I surround my user with a veil of nourishing liquid. For as long as they are in battle, all their injuries will go away. What am I?"
It works the same way as a famously used held item.
This healing moves heals a certain amount, think about that.
It can be Baton Passed
Aqua Ring
So, how did you do? Did you manage to get it right? Well, regardless, thanks for playing, and I will see you next month to test your move knowledge again.
Welcome to the May issue of Hex Puzzle! Let's get started!
4D 61 72 69 6F 20 61 6E 64 20 4C 75 69 67 69 is "Mario and Luigi" or 53 6F 6E 69 63 20 61 6E 64 20 54 61 69 6C 73 is "Sonic and Tails". With these together, you can guess that 4D is a capital M.
Round 1

Did you decode the texts for May? As always, thanks for playing!! And maybe see you all for the next Fun Stuff issue!
Where in the Marioverse is Carmen Sandiego?
Each issue, you will be given a case to solve and clues to use to help you find the solution! Use your Mario knowledge to crack the case!
You will begin each case at the scene of the crime, and you will be given three clues from passerby as to where the next hot spot is and what game it’s from. Using your knowledge of Mario games and the Super Mario Wiki, figure out where the crook is and go track them down! There are four locations each round: the crime scene (1) at the start, two locations (2 and 3) with clues, and the hideout for the crook of the month (4). Answers for locations will be given with the corresponding round, for example, the clues from the crime scene will lead you to location 2, and once you open the spoiler bubbles for location 2, you will be given the correct answer. You can open the clues for each location in any order you’d like, but be careful! You may encounter an incorrect clue that could throw you off the case!
Clues offered will give you a hint either about the next location or the game it’s in. Unlike a regular Carmen Sandiego game, you do not have to collect information about the crook you are tracking down.
Challenge round (optional):
-Find all locations and games correctly in two minutes or less
-Find all locations and games correctly without using the rest of the Wiki for help
"Hold your horses, gumshoe, your new case is here! Lakitu has requested your service this time- his fishing pole and camera equipment have been stolen! Lakitu has worked for MarioKart for years now, both as the official countdown starter and as a referee who fishes unlucky racers back onto the track if they manage to fall of it. He works as a cameraman in many different games, and he's invested a lot of money into his camera equipment- it is part of his job, and he takes pride in his work! Our sources are not sure if Carmen is behind this- is she looking to turn her life of crime into a documentary? Either way, gumshoe, it's time to buckle down and get to the bottom of this caper!"

Cloud Cruising from Yoshi's Story
"The spotlight is on you, gumshoe, another triumph! Excellent work! We followed your instructions, and some of the descriptions we'd been given by helpful bystanders along the way, and tracked down our subject- a Koopa Troopa tht was interested in starting his own blog. Sounds like he didn't have enough money for a proper camera- but stealing one isn't the way to go! Your detective work guided us along each step of the way and Lakitu has his camera and fishing pole back and is ready to get back to work- but he might take a day off to go fishing. You, too, are also eligible for a day off. Lakitu has sent your fee ahead and we've deposited it into your account. Take the weekend off and get some rest yourself. We'll be in touch for your next case!"

Written by: Ninja Squid (talk)
Hello there, and welcome a very... cloudy Musical Quiz!
Indeed! In order to celebrate our friend Lakituthequick (talk) who has been The 'Shroom's Website Manager for 100 issues, all the music tracks for this edition are cloud-themed. Will you manage to discover which game these musical tracks can be heard in?
Have fun!
