LEGO Super Mario is a product partnership between the Danish toy company LEGO and the Super Mario franchise featuring characters, settings, and objects from the Super Mario series made of bricks that can interact, including Mario, Yoshi, Shy Guy, Piranha Plant, and Bowser Jr. Since its introduction in 2020, it has been focused on a unique form of design that revolves around interactive, electronic figures of characters such as Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, who play sound effects and voice lines based on elements they interact with. On January 1, 2027, sets featuring traditional LEGO minifigures of Super Mario characters will debut.[1]
History
The product was first teased on March 10, 2020 (MAR10 Day), on Twitter,[2] and it was officially announced on March 12, 2020.[3] Prior to LEGO's partnership with Nintendo, Super Mario construction toys were created by rival business K'NEX. Several set pictures and names were officially revealed on April 6, 2020, as well as a few new sets. The theme released early at Target in late July[4] and everywhere else on August 1, 2020,[5] with 13 sets revolving around the new interactive Mario figure, which has been shown to react to different things through scanning different stickers on top of 2×2 tiles below it. The stickers with the codes for Mario to scan on top of the 2×2 tiles will be pre-applied when the set is opened, a first in the history of LEGO. According to a designer during an interview, this is because they are very important stickers to the function of the sets, and younger children often have difficulty applying stickers.[6]
Four Power-Up Packs were also announced for the set, and they include suits for the Mario figure based on Fire Mario, Propeller Mario, Cat Mario, and Builder Mario.[7]
Officially announced on July 14, 2020, a LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System was also released as part of the partnership on August 1.[8] The set consists of LEGO versions of the system itself, the controller, a Super Mario Bros. cartridge, and a television with a moving panorama depicting a level from the aforementioned game. The Mario figure is also compatible with the set.[9]
On November 17, 2020, a second wave of sets was officially announced[10] after the set numbers and prices had been released in September. The new wave features a further seven sets, including two new power-up packs, a "Maker Set," a new series of character packs, and three expansion sets.
On April 20, 2021, another Starter Course was officially announced[11] after Mario was updated to mention Luigi when waking up from sleep. This new Starter Course comes with an interactive "LEGO Luigi" with unique sounds and reactions.
On September 9, 2021, Nintendo and LEGO announced the "LEGO Super Mario 64 ? Block", a large ? Block that opens up into dioramas of areas from Super Mario 64: Peach's Castle; Bob-omb Battlefield; Cool, Cool Mountain; and Lethal Lava Land (referred to as Lethal Lava Trouble in the set). The set was released on October 1, 2021.[12] Despite its name, no ? Blocks appear in the original version of Super Mario 64; these were later added in Super Mario 64 DS.
On MAR10 Day 2022,[13] Nintendo announced the "LEGO Peach" figure, which was released in August 2022, alongside additional expansion sets.
On MAR10 Day 2023,[14] the "Dry Bowser Castle Battle" set and LEGO Donkey Kong were announced, with the former releasing on August 1, 2023, and the latter releasing in Summer 2023. On April 26, 2023,[15][16] the LEGO Super Mario Donkey Kong label was teased on social media, featuring figures of Cranky Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and Funky Kong in addition to Donkey Kong.
On March 9, 2024,[17] LEGO hosted a presentation to announce news about LEGO Super Mario in celebration of MAR10 Day 2024. The "Bowser Express Train" set, the "King Boo's Haunted Mansion" set, and the "Battle with Roy at Peach's Castle" set were announced and showcased. The presentation ended with a teaser for Mario Kart to be represented within LEGO Super Mario in some capacity in 2025, showing a silhouette of a LEGO Standard Kart. On August 21, 2024, the set was fully revealed as LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart and announced to release on January 1, 2025.[18]
On MAR10 Day 2025, Nintendo revealed a Mario Kart set that includes a more detailed, larger-scale model of Mario in his Standard Kart, which was released on May 15, 2025.[19]
On January 22, 2026, Nintendo released a teaser for a Luigi model in the LEGO Mario Kart series at the same scale as the Mario model.[20] It was fully revealed on MAR10 Day 2026 as a model of Luigi in the Mach 8, which released on April 1, 2026, the same day as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's release for most of the world.[21] Also on MAR10 Day, Nintendo revealed a Mario minifigure set to be released in 2027.[22]
Interactive line
The interactive line of LEGO Super Mario sets is centered around using electronic figures of Mario, Luigi, and Peach. Each of them features a sensor at the bottom of the figure, and screens on their chest, eyes, and mouth. The scanner can be used to read special codes printed on specific pieces called "Action Tags",[23] which causes the screens to display different things depending on what they interact with. The figures can be paired via Bluetooth to a smartphone with an accompanying LEGO Super Mario app in order to track scores. Unless explicitly specified otherwise, any mentioning of Mario in the article is equally applicable to Luigi and Peach.
Each interactive set consists of various course-like elements such as blocks, platforms and enemies, which can be arranged by the player in any way. Multiple sets can be connected using plates, and only specific sets contain a Mario figure. Mario starts a playthrough by scanning a pipe's Action Tag. Mario's screen then displays a timer showing the amount of time the player has in which to clear the course. Different music is played depending on the set being played, with most of the music coming from Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. The course ends by touching the Goal Pole, with Mario then showing how many coins were collected in the run. The Mario figure can also perform various actions by scanning Action Tags, such as:
- Stomping on enemies, defeating them and earning coins.
- Gaining power-ups or coins by hitting blocks.
- Gaining coins by interacting with elements in the level, including friendly characters such as Yoshi or Toads.
- If Mario approaches a Yoshi (other than the one in "71367: Mario's House & Yoshi,"), they allow the player to swallow one-hit enemies for coins instead of stomping them.[11]
- If Mario touches a POW Block, it also allows them to defeat stronger enemies in one hit.
Additionally, Mario can detect the type of ground he is touching based on its color (even if the ground is not LEGO), reacting accordingly and displaying a different image on his chest screen.
| Color | Ground type | Effect when stepped on |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Grass | A simple jumping sound effect is played. |
| Yellow | Sand | A simple sound effect for walking on sand is played. |
| Blue | Water | A simple splash sound effect is played. |
| Light blue | Snow / ice | A simple sound effect for walking on ice is played. If placed on blue water terrain after, the character's display freezes and the character makes hurt noises. Once they are in that state, if they are placed on lava and the ice breaks, an exclamation mark displays and they immediately start yelling with X eyes. |
| Brown | Wood | A simple wooden footstep is played. |
| Red | Lava | A burning sound effect is played and the character displays a hurt expression. If they stay long enough, they eventually yell and their eyes display as X's. They display a relieved expression once taken out of the lava and earn coins if they are placed on water. |
| Purple | Poison | The character is covered in poison and takes damage after a few seconds. If they stay long enough, they eventually yell and their eyes display as swirls. The figure can be shaken to remove these effects and earn coins. |
When playing together, two interactive figures can connect to each other via Bluetooth. While connected, players can collect bonus coins by defeating enemies together. Once a player reaches the Goal Pole and triggers the end of the level, the remaining player has eight seconds to reach the end themselves. Reaching the Goal Pole in time awards them bonus coins, but not reaching it still triggers the end of the level for both. The total coin total is shared between both players.

The following table consists of enemy figures in LEGO Super Mario interactive sets which act as obstacles and can usually be defeated by interacting with them. While most have Action Tags on their figures, some can only be interacted with by Action Tags placed on the set itself. If multiple figures are included in a set, the number of them is given in parenthesis.
