Directors' Notes

Super Mario Bros. (talk)

Greetings everybody! Welcome to the May 2013 edition of The 'Shroom.

I am going to start by saying that I am very excited about the Special Issue, which is coming out next month. We have a lot of things that we plan to feature, some of which will be exclusive to next month and some of which will be permanent projects for future issues. We also have guest writers, events, the Feedback Survey and plenty more in store that will make this issue outstanding and a fun read. I will have detailed coverage of each feature next month.

Other than that, we have been working a bit on the Archives and restoring archived issues, doing some things with the sign-ups (getting rid of the unnecessary "Leading Staff" and "Late section" designations), securing the ten 'Shroom Awards that will be in the celebration later this year, and various other projects. We will be doing a lot more of these sorts of things throughout the next few months in order to make the paper more streamlined and easier to access.

And that is about all I have to share for this month. Tune in on June 15th, 2013 for our Special Issue! Again, we have a lot in store and I am certain that it will be a blast!

HI! I'm your vacationing Co-director, Tucayo, here with my notes! Last month was a rather quiet one, let's see what went down.

  • We finally got rid of the Leading Staff designation, after it was decided it served no use.
  • Yoshi K (talk) has replaced McZaky29 (talk) as Fake Sports writer.
  • Paper Yoshi (talk) will get his Fake News debut with Ask Paper Yoshi, be sure to give it a read!
  • After some months of being officially listed as its co-writer, YoshiKong (talk) was appointed as the sole writer for Community Report.
  • On a sad note, Rise Up Above It (talk) has left his job as Character Artwork of the Month writer. If you're interested, please give it a try!
  • That reminds me, all applicants and writers should try to follow the Manual of Style. An application that doesn't follow the guidelines established is likely to be rejected.
  • Our ten Awards were approved by the committee, be sure to check out Anniversary Announcements for a complete run-through.
  • Please be sure to contribute with this month's Spotlight, this is a great way to help the Super Mario Wiki.

Critic Corner


Damn that Henry Tucayo Clay (talk), going away on holidays and leaving me with his dirty work! I guess it partially makes up for bailing out of my writing duties for Dippy's Matilda, but still, I have homework to do. Anyway, last month had only three Main Team sections, which suggests we seriously need more people on this team ASAP. Even the voter turnout was significantly lower than it should've been, and that's just no good. Please support your local staff members by giving us your writing!

Oh yeah and the winner for the April Main Section of the Month was Superchao (talk) again for his Interview section, this time roasting one of the site's most beloved user and the unquestioned master of the Wiki forums, MST3K (talk). Congrats on yet another victory, mate, and… yeah, my job here is done. Cheers, mates!



The 'Shroom Spotlight

Hello readers! YoshiKong here with this month's edition of 'Shroom Spotlight. So last month, we had our first 'Shroom Spotlight section in years. The section's focus was to help improve the Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga article, which was nominated to be unfeatured back in March this year, due to the article not reflecting Featured Article standards. Some of the main issues with the article were: the brief opening paragraph, the overly long Story section, and the empty sections, which needed to be filled as per policy. Throughout the month, we were able to take care of two of these three problems with the article, as recorded here. However, we do need more contributors to the project. If you are interested, then please read on!

For this month's issue of The 'Shroom Spotlight, we're going to have one page from each improvement category, so there's more variety with what users can choose to help out with. The articles are as follows:

  • Beanbean Kingdom (needs more images) – For those of you who wish to continue the "saga" from last month, this article requires more images. Specific sections of the article in dire need include "Government", "Areas" and "Species".
  • Goombario (long Trivia section) – The plumber-admiring partner who appears in Paper Mario, Goombario. The article currently has seven points of Trivia, many of which could easily be incorporated into the opening paragraph and the History section.
  • Donuts and Eggs (stub) – This level from the game Yoshi's Island DS is currently tagged as a stub. Although, compared to other articles in this improvement category, the length isn't too bad. But it's missing much-needed info on the level layout. The current content could also use a rewrite.
  • Gearmo (rewrite) – The article about these robots who first appeared in Super Mario Galaxy requires a rewrite, due to the abundance of flowery writing.

If you are interested in helping out with any of these articles, then be sure to contribute however you can! We'll be reviewing our progress next month. Hello, and welcome to the Fake News. I've got exams this month, so I won't really be able to type up a lot here. In terms of staff changes, Marioman1213 (talk) has resigned from the Police Blotter and Yoshi K (talk) has been hired as the writer of the Sport Report. We wish them good luck for the future and in their new postion, respectively.

Tucayo (talk)'s Ask Tucayo won April's Section of the Month with 35 votes, followed by my News Flush with 28 votes.

Hello, everybody, it's Pyro back with another issue of Torture - er, Travel Guide! Last month didn't go so well (I'm sorry - I forgot to get dat dereh Kirbeh), so this month, we'll go somewhere exotic! It's Waluigi's Taco Stand!

No, I kid. We're going to a HOTTER tourist spot than Waluigi's Taco Stand or Melty Molten Galaxy could ever be. What is this fiery, burning place you ask? Lavalava Island!

Lavalava Island is a great getaway for vacation, especially for Australians, as this place is really warm compared to your winter vacation. Aaand here comes some new 6-year old American users, having no idea what the heck I'm talking about. They do know what I'm talking about, though, if I say this island has Yoshis!

That's right, there is a village of dinosaurs on the island. There's some ragtag runaway Yoshis, a fat Yoshi, and ravens. I didn't make friends with any of them, especially the ravens. Tourist tip: don't bug the ravens.

Coconuts free of charge!

The main island consists of lots and lots of grass and a jungle full of deadly, poisonous plants and carnivorous bushes. You can pratically imagine how well that turned out for me. There's also Fuzzies who jump so fast that it would probably be true if I said that they drunk Soda Lake dry. And the most terrifying monsters on the island...Coconuts! They hit you on your head! It hurts. ' There's also a massive tree on the island, totally barren of life. Except ravens. Whoop-dee-doo. I love ravens.

Finally, there's a massive volcano in the middle of the island - Mt. Lavalava. It's scorching hot, wonderful, full of treasure, and scorching hot! I'm absolutely sick of volcanoes, but I had to go into it, because it was the hottest tourist spot on the island.

There's also plentiful zip-lines in Mt. Lavalava, which is quite fun if you don't fall off and land head-on into the Spike Tops and Putrid Piranhas below. I discovered a hammer and a vase as well, but I just left them there.

Finally, I was chased by a Spiny Tromp and crushed by it. After I stumbled out of the volcano, I was exiled to Shy Guy's Toybox by the Yoshis. "For the funniez!"

Then, I ran out of jokes.

Hello! Welcome to the next edition of Gamer Guide. Hosted by yours truly, Yoshi K.

This month we have another new sports game, and it has, you guessed it, ZELDA Mario characters!

General Info:
Name: Super Mario Rugby
Console: Wii U

Super Mario Rugby is a spinoff sports title that features the game American football was heavily based on. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, DK, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, and Bowser Jr. are the captains you can choose from at the start of the game.

The controls are simple, use the Left Stick to run, A to Tackle, B to Pitch, X to Kick, and Y to place the ball down for a try.

In SMR, you can play World Cup, Exhibition or Multiplayer with the various players the game has to offer. In World Cup, you enter your team into a big rugby tournament and try to find out who is the best player of all, in four cups. The first cup is the Mushroom Cup, which is easy, Flower Cup is medium, Star Cup is hard, and Special Cup is expert. You can unlock different players by beating these cups a certain amount of times. In Exhibition, you just play a game for fun, like all the other games that have the mode, but you can still unlock certain things if you win enough exhibition games! Now the final mode, multiplayer, in multiplayer, you can go on the Internet and play someone, or, you can play another person sitting right next to you when they use a Wii Remote, always fun!

The game was pretty good, though it could have been better, I'd say about an 8/10.

Hello, folks. This is your loving Chief Alexneushoorn. I finally managed to make enough money to pay the rent and the penalty of 12 coins, so I'm allowed to use my HQ again. Anyway, time to get to the stories. And oh boy, these stories are certainly interesting. Just sit back and listen.


1. Missing: Oinker

This Friday, Orbulon, employee of the well-known WarioWare Inc. lost his spaceship, the Oinker during a flight over Diamond City. Eyewitnesses Jimmy T. and Jamie T. saw the bowling pin-like alien fly around Club Sugar at 11:21 PM, when the Oinker suddenly went out of control. Orbulon escaped unharmed, but the Oinker flew off, with Orbulon, Jimmy T. and Jamie T. chasing after it. They eventually lost the Oinker at the harbour of Diamond City. The Oinker is a pink pig-like UFO. Please contact Koopatrol Patrol Inc. if you found the Oinker. There is a 100 coins reward.


2. Dribble and Spitz's Taxi Adventure


Dribble and Spitz, cabbies at Diamond Taxi, got a crazy taxi adventure last Wednesday Night. Late at night, the furry cabbies were just doing their work, and drove down Route 99. Dribble almost fell asleep, but Spitz, who was the smartest of the two, gave Dribble a big bowl of sugar. Dribble ate the bowl empty in one go. Suddenly, the burly speed freak went on a sugar rush, kicked the gaspedal and speeded off. Spitz realised he made a big mistake. He tried to calm Dribble down, but failed. Soon they speeded by a Diamond Police Car, who joined forces with a nearby police car of Koopatrol Patrol Inc. in order to catch the speeding cabbies. Spitz saw the cops, and then said: I already got a partner on sugar rush. I don't want the police to get involved with this. Spitz then grabbed a laser gun, opened the top of the taxi and attempted to shoot at the cops. After 2 attempts to hit the police cars, he shot both of them at the same time. Dribble and Spitz escaped from the cops. We from Koopatrol Patrol Inc. are currently looking for them.

Hey readers! I'm sure you all want some sports updates! Well, I want a way to get into sports events for free! So I decided to write Fake Sports! Wait, hold on...

*talking*

Wait a minute...
I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE TICKETS?!?!?!?!?!?!
I thought you did that!

Boss: Hey, you've got to be committed to work for us.

Ok, fine. Where am I going today?

Boss: Tennis!

What?

Boss: Just kidding, you're going here.

Well, it appears I'm going to witness a good old game of American Volleyball! Oh wait, it's the same everywhere in the world? Ok, sorry about that, it's Indoor Volleyball!

The teams that are squaring off today are very interesting, this game is between The Nimbus Land Rainbow Warriors and The Other Team. In case you were wondering,

Who is this mysterious creature?
The Other Team is made up of people such as this fellow to the right. Nobody knows exactly what they are, so they're just called The Other Team.

Anyways, enough with the teams, let's explain the rules for those of you who don't know. (If you do know, you can just skip over this part)
Volleyball teams are made up of 6 players, all on the court. These teams are trying to score more points than their opponent (who knew?). To score a point, a team must either land the ball on their opponents side of the court, or have their opponent fault, which can be done by any of the following scenarios:

  1. A team hits the ball out of bounds.
  2. A team hits the ball 4 times in a row before sending the ball over the net.
  3. One player hits the ball 2 times in a row.
  4. Catching and/or throwing the ball.
  5. Touching the net during play.
  6. The server's foot crosses over the boundary line when serving.

Volleyball is played in a best-of-five series of sets, to win a set a team must score 25 points, although in the fifth set, a team only has to score 15 points. To win the match, a team must win 3 sets, anyway, let's get to the actual game.

The game got off to a slow start after the Rainbow Warrior's serve was eaten by a member of the Other Team, who misunderstood the concept of "serving". The officials didn't know what to do, so they awarded the Rainbow Warriors the point. After the clarification of the "serving" part of volleyball, The Other Team began to play extremely well, going up 20-2 in the first set before a timeout was called by the Rainbow Warriors. Me being a news reporter, I just had to get a front row seat, and it happened to be right in front of the Warriors' bench. So naturally, I heard some of the coach's speech, like "You guys are playing horrible!" and "I'm going to quit if we lose to these idiots!" You know, friendly stuff a coach would say. After the timeout, the Warriors played great, scoring 20 consecutive points to make the score 22-20 but the Other Team wasn't giving up, they scored 2 to make it tied at 22. The Warriors scored next, but The Other team eventually wins the set 25-23. That makes the score,
Other Team: 1
Rainbow Warriors: 0

Onto the Second Set, the two teams continually go back and forth and play hard. At this point it's clear the Rainbow Warriors are trying to tire out the Other Team with a slow-paced match, and it's working! After the score was tied at 12, the Warriors go on an 8-point hot streak to make the score of the set 20-12. As expected, the Other Team calls a timeout to regroup. After the timeout (an ads for AMAZING products such as the Poison Mushroom Detector), the set continues, the Rainbow Warriors pick up where they left off, scoring 3 straight, but the Other Team reads them like a book on the next 5 serves, scoring each time to make the score of the set 23-17 Warriors. After 3 more OT points, the Warriors surprise the Other Team by playing up-tempo and get 2 quick points to win the set 25-20. Making the score of the match,
Other Team: 1
Rainbow Warriors: 1

Ah yes, now it is the hard third set, where you are tired from the first two sets and need to somehow save energy for the last two. The Other Team starts off trying to conserve energy, but that doesn't work well as the Rainbow Warriors continue to play up-tempo and score 15 right off the bat, but the Other Team's coach is not concerned as play continues as normal. The Warriors continue to burn their opposition by scoring 9 more, but the serve goes out of bounds on the next play, ruining the Warriors chance at a shutout set. The Warriors do score the final point, making the score of the set 25-1 The score of the match at this point is,
Rainbow Warriors: 2
Other Team: 1

Before the fourth set, I went to ask the coach of the Other Team how he felt about his team getting crushed in Set 3, he simply said, "Right now, the Warriors are playing right into our hands with the super-fast game, that's what we want them to do, and if that includes getting demolished in one set, so be it." I honestly had no idea what he meant when the Rainbow Warriors score 12 consecutive points right at the start of the fourth set, but then after a four-hit fault by the Warriors, I saw what he meant. The Warriors are starting to burn out. The Warriors still do well, scoring 7 more in a row, but after that everything went downhill, like the beginning of the game, the Other Team scores 20 points straight in a row, making the set score 21-19 Other Team. It looks like we still have a game on our hands. The Other team then scores 3 in a row, until a Warriors player taunts a player on the Other Team, that player then throws the ball at him, starting a brawl. The officials then call a timeout to sort things out. After the best sports fight I've seen in years, the Other Team wins the set 25-20. Making the score
Other Team: 2
Rainbow Warriors: 2

At the start of the fifth set everyone knew that the Rainbow Warriors were in no shape to play volleyball after the fight, and it seemed the Other Team found their weakness, scoring 13 points straight in a row, but as we all know, nothing is straight in the world of Mushroom Kingdom Volleyball, especially when lucky numbers come into play.

For whatever reason, the Other Team started chasing after this guy
After the unlucky 13th point was scored, some guy in a yellow shirt and purple overalls taunted the Other Team with some treasure, the Other Team immediately ran after him for whatever reason, and a timeout was called. Unfortunately for them, the Other Team did not come back in time to continue playing, and the Rainbow Warriors had an opportunity to grab victory from the jaws of defeat, after 14 points in a row, the Other Team was spotted outside the stadium, but the Rainbow Warriors got the last point needed before the Other Team got back to the court, winning one of the oddest sporting events I have seen in recent years the final score,

Rainbow Warriors: 23 25 25 20 15 3
Other Team: 25 20 1 25 13 2

  • An Ultra Shroom from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. - Ultra Shroom; I guarantee you this will be the best mushroom you've ever tasted. Warm, shroomy flavor, buttery coating, amazing uses... extremely healthy... -drool- Cost: 200 coins.
  • Jammin Jelly TTYD.png - Jammin' Jelly; Made from the sweetest, ripest, best-tasting fruits, you will never, not once, be disappointed with a peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich if you have this! Cost; 200 coins.
  • Gold Bar SPM.png - Gold Bar; Rumor has it that these came from a haunted mansion, and someone in green used them to build another one... Either way, these babies are worth LOTS. Cost; 110 coins.
  • Gold Bar x3 SPM.png - Gold Bar x3; Three gold bars that are worth even more than just one. How creative, just put three things in one and it's automatically a new item... woo hoo. Cost; 350 coins.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the – well, after the original Ask Tucayo, Ask '3K and the second run of Ask Tucayo, I guess this is Season 4 of the Ask... series, so let's go with that – ANYWAY, welcome to Season 4 of the Ask... series, now with myself, Paper Yoshi (talk), as your host! Before saying anything else, I would like to thank Tucayo for giving me the amazing opportunity of writing this section, one I greatly enjoy reading. I'll be sure to do my best in this new position, and I hope we all have fun with it. However, this section depends on you, the reader, in order to be featured in the paper, so please keep the questions coming!

I've held you long enough, so let's get to what really matters: the questions! As of the time I'm writing this, I have got only two questions. Both come from this section's previous writer, Tucayo (talk), who asks:

Why did you decide to take over Ask Tucayo?
Well, the answer is pretty simple. If you didn't know already, I love writing for the paper, so, naturally, I wanted to write as many sections as I could, which is pretty evident in the Pipe Plaza team (I write three sections there, going over the previous limit of two sections). However, since I'm in college now, I looked for sections that are easy to write, which made me apply for Crossword and Ask Tucayo this year. Additionally, as previously stated, this is one section I have always enjoyed reading, so that's another reason I decided to apply for it.
Since you asked me this some months ago, and I had trouble answering, I want to know your answer to the question. What is your favorite Coldplay song?
Now that's a tricky question! Right now, my favorite Coldplay song would be... Yellow, I guess. It's a beautiful song overall, and I really like it. I also enjoy Hurts Like Heaven, Violet Hill and the live version of God Put a Smile Upon Your Face.

It is I, your glorious leader, here to tell you that not all that much has happened this month except of course for the tragic resignation of I, your handsome and all-knowing leader, from the trivia section due to me having to prepare for the upcoming war against the Pipe Plaza section. In other news: This month’s section of the Month winner is Freakworld with his Guess Who section which got 15 votes. In second place was the brave General Bob-omb with his Hiding Koopa section which got 11 votes. And finally in third place we have the speaker of the Mariowiki house, Henry “Tucayo” Clay, who recived 10 votes for his mystery images section. Japanese box art for Super Mario Bros.

HI, readers! I'm your pine-scented Co-director, Tucayo, bringing you another box art! And yes, it is yet another Japanese box art. This month I decided to review the Japanese cover of Super Mario Bros. Significantly different from the American box art, this one is an artwork that perfectly summarizes the game in one image; whereas the immensely popular American one is basically a sprite of Fire Mario jumping and throwing a fireball. Back to our cover in turn, on the right side of the image we can see a fortress, with a weirdly-colored Bowser holding Princess Toadstool hostage, with a couple of jumping Toads, which are both oddly joyful, despite having balls-and-chains on their legs. A plethora of enemies can be seen surrounding Mario, most of which look rather peculiar. Oh, and is that Lakitu holding the Spiny with a chain? I don't even remember that happening, but maybe it was because of the graphics. Or maybe this one is his pet Spiny? Anyway, I'm senselessly ranting, so I'll just wrap this up. Hello, readers, and welcome to the May Issue of Random Image of the Month!!

This month's Random Image is a simple one. It depicts a Goomba as it appears in New Super Mario Bros. U.

Goombas are one of the main enemies faced by Mario and Co. through their adventures. In the Super Mario Bros. games, they are found in the majority of levels, usually being the first enemy encountered by the player in the first level. They are a fungus-based species, resembling brown mushrooms. Additionally, Goombas are very weak, which allows the player to easily defeat them with a single stomp.

As for the image itself, it is extremely detailed due to its high resolution, showing every single trait from a regular walking Goomba, such as the two pointed teeth or the lack of arms.

Last month, Turboo focused on the award changes that were discussed by the Awards Committee in March. The second-placed section was Projects Seeking Contributors, written by YoshiKong (talk), with 4 votes (25%), while MrConcreteDonkey (talk) got third place with his Forum Update, earning a total of 3 votes (18.75%).

Hey and welcome to the Community Report, here to keep you updated on the latest wiki happenings. So during this month on the wiki, we've had quite a big change in staff. There have been two demotions since the last issue: former Pipe Plaza writer Bop1996 (talk) has demoted from sysop to autopatrolled due to inactivity. And Fun Stuff director Marshal Dan Troop (talk) has resigned from his patroller position. On top of these, we have also had two promotions. Turboo (talk) was promoted to a patroller: congratulations! And yours truly YoshiKong was made a sysop.

Always make sure your spacing is correct before saving edits to a page. Improper spacing in a table could mess up the entire format. Leaving a space before text or an image on a page with the space bar will result in that text being surrounded by a dashed blue box, which is quite unsightly in an article.

Upcoming Games (Paper Yoshi (talk))

Hello, readers, and welcome to Upcoming Games!! As I said earlier in my notes, I have a very important announcement regarding this section, so let's get to it right away.

Starting this month, I'll switch to a bi-monthly writing plan for Upcoming Games. I have been struggling to finish my sections before the deadline in one way or another for a whopping six months, and, even though I was able to cope with that in the last six issues, it has become impossible for me to continue doing all this work. Upcoming Games takes up a considerable time for me to write, since it usually involves a lot of research. That, plus all the stuff I have to do for college, has been driving me crazy during the two weeks preceding each issue's release, so I ultimately decided to change it. I will write for this month's issue, and then the bi-monthly writing cycle begins. However, I might write for the June Issue in case the E3 coverage needs to be split up between the June and July Issues.

Well, I guess that's all I wanted to say! Now it's time to discuss...

Another Nintendo Direct Conference!

Nintendo held yet another Nintendo Direct conference last month, on April 17th. That was before Issue LXXIII was released, but, since the Pipe Plaza was done by then, I decided to write about it in the following issue, which happens to be this one.

As with the other Nintendo Direct videos, Satoru Iwata, the President of Nintendo, unveiled many new details on previously announced games, aside from two new 3DS Mario titles. The first game to be featured in the broadcast was Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, as Mr. Iwata walked viewers through a bit of the game's story and some gameplay aspects. Princess Peach is, once again, for the thousandth time, kidnapped, and then dragged to Luigi's Dream World. Mario must explore said world, which may be accessed when Luigi sleeps on a magical pillow, in order to save Peach.

The gameplay is basically the same from previous games in the series, with some unique mechanics. Although he's sleeping while Mario explores the Dream World, Luigi is able to help his big bro in various situations, including platforming segments and enemy battles. The battle system remains virtually unchanged, with five categories of attack, as in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. However, a new special attack category, called Luiginary Attacks, replaces Bros. Attacks in the Dream World. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team will be released in North America on August 11th, and in Europe, Australia and Japan on July 12th, 13th and 18th, respectively.

Iwata-san then proceeded to talk a bit about Mario Golf: World Tour. As the game's subtitle suggests, World Tour will feature online worldwide multiplayer, as well as local multiplayer. It will also use the Community system introduced in Mario Kart 7 to let players join themed matches. The game will be released in all regions this summer.

The first new Mario game to appear in the conference was Mario Party (tentative title), for the Nintendo 3DS. The gameplay remains the same from other Mario Party titles, with a twist this time around. The 3DS Mario Party installment will feature seven different boards to choose from, and each will have their own set of rules. Boards will also differ in game length; some will be shorter, while players will compete for a longer period of time in others. MP3DS will also support AR cards, as some minigames will require them. Mario Party is scheduled to be released this winter.

Afterwards, Satoru Iwata presented additional information regarding Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. A new mode, fittingly called the New Mode, will be added to the game in order to make it easier and more friendly for new players, or players that found the original game too challenging. In the New Mode, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong have three hearts each, instead of the two from the Wii version. Additionally, it will feature items designed to help the player in various ways, such as the Green Balloon, which will float players back to safety once after a fall. A brand new world has also been added to the game: it will be unlocked after the player beats the main game, in either mode. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will be released in North America and Europe on May 24th, in Australia on May 25th and in Japan on June 16th.

Another game discussed by the President of Nintendo was Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move, which, as of the time of writing this, has already been released in North America, Europe and Australia. It introduces a new perspective to the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series with brand new 3D-styled levels. Minis on the Move features over 180 levels across four different game modes. Those include a broad variety of levels, from small and simple ones to gigantic levels that don't fit in a single 3DS screen. Minigames are also included in Minis on the Move. The game will be released in Japan this summer.

Mr. Iwata also unveiled a second new Mario game: Yoshi's Island (tentative title), for the Nintendo 3DS. More details about the game will be announced in a future date. Lastly, Bill Trinen, from the Nintendo Treehouse, announced that Game & Wario will be released in North America on June 23rd. It will also be released in Europe and Australia on June 28th and 29th, respectively.

Digital Releases

Nintendo launched the Wii U Virtual Console in all regions last month (check below for specific release dates), and three Mario games were released alongside the Virtual Console launch: Super Mario World (SNES), in all regions; Donkey Kong Jr. (NES), in North America, Europe and Australia; and Mario's Super Picross (SNES), in Japan, Europe and Australia.

The Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console also got new titles in the last few days. Yoshi (NES) was released on May 2nd in Europe and Australia, while Mario Bros. (NES) was released in Japan on May 8th.

Update: Last Minute News!

Hello, everyone, this is Paper Yoshi (talk) with news on the latest Nintendo Direct video, which was broadcast earlier today (May 17th). I could cover this in a future issue, since we're just one day away from release, but, as I will switch to a bi-monthly writing plan – meaning I won't write Upcoming Games in the next issue – I decided to write it today. As always, Satoru Iwata unveiled new games and more details on previously covered games.

The video kicked off with the announcement of a new installment in the Mario & Sonic series. Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be the fourth game in the series, and will retain the same gameplay as its predecessors. More details will be unveiled in the future.

Afterwards, JC Rodrigo, from the Nintendo Treehouse, proceeded to show a few more gameplay details and additional footage for both Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Minis on the Move was released in North America earlier this month, on May 9th, while DKCR3D will hit physical and digital shelves a few days from now, on May 24th (check above for release dates in other regions).

JC then showed three minigames from Game & Wario: Islands, Patchwork and Kung Fu. Islands is a multiplayer minigame in which players must catapult their Fronks to an island divided in sections that give different amounts of points. The objective is to score the most points, done by correctly landing Fronks on the island and knocking other players' Fronks off. Patchwork is a single-player game that consists on placing patches onto a cloth to decipher the hidden shape of an object. In Kung Fu, players must guide the jumping Young Cricket through different platforming levels by tilting the Wii U GamePad.

Mr. Iwata made a second appearance to deliver more information regarding New Super Luigi U, a special DLC pack for New Super Mario Bros. U. Since the game will not feature Mario as a playable character, he will be replaced by Nabbit, an enemy from NSMBU who stole items from Toad Houses. Nabbit won't be able to use collected power-ups, but, in turn, he won't take damage by touching enemies. New Super Luigi U will be released as DLC for NSMBU in Japan on June 19th, in North America and Europe on June 20th and in Australia on July 21st. Additionally, a standalone retail version of the game, which will not require the player to own NSMBU, will be released in Japan, Europe and Australia on July 13th, 26th and 27th, respectively, and in North America on August 25th.

Lastly, as a separate piece of news, Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) was released for the North American Wii U Virtual Console yesterday, May 16th.

Whoa was not expecting this one. I never win these anymore unless I'm the only person writing for that issue, or am only going up against Senor Caiman (because honestly, crocodiles would kick caiman's asses any day). But yeah, I won last month's section of the month for Dippy's Matilda with 8 votes in total, which concerned further issues the gaming industry continues to have with women protagonists.

Running up with 5 votes was New Super Mario (talk) for his personalised NSM's Review Corner, which covered his thoughts on the anticipated Luigi's Mansion 2!

Hey guys! It's YoshiMonsta with the next entertainment article in The 'Shroom. Today we'll be reviewing a video called Mario Warfare, made by beatdownboogie, and I'll warn you, it includes a little graphic content. Though, I will have it underneath the review, check it out if you want guys!

The story in this film really impressed me. The actors made it very clear what was going on, and not one bit of it really escaped me. From when the Koopa army invaded to the end where Mario and Luigi were joining the military, I, and all of the other viewers (hopefully) understood it all.

Well, Mario Warfare is one of the videos that is kind of hard to comment on, since there is not much wrong with it at all. I'll start with the compliments. As a start, the scenery is great, and it is obvious they put a lot of effort into it. The costumes are great, and they give a great personification of the character before they even talk. The acting is much better than many other Mario-themed videos I have seen before. You can get things about the characters without even having known them that long, thanks to the actions of other characters.

Now, as always, I must get on to the criticism. When the Shy Guy Soldier cut the Toad Soldier's throat it was pretty unrealistic. Also, the lack of ammo in that bothered me; how Toad could do all that without even reloading once with his dual Uzis (I'll call them that since I do not really know guns). Peach may have had some acting problems when she was sad because she had to leave her father and toad to die, she seemed like she may have been smiling. When Toad attacks a group of enemies, he can kill them all before even one can pull the triggers. When Toad turned the pistol on the Shy Guy Soldier, his Uzis seemed to disappear. When Bullet Bill (yeah that's his name) headed toad, he just slid backwards, unrealistically. Also when Toad and Bullet Bill were staring off one could have easily shot the other. And if they were trying to prove who the fastest shot is, Bullet Bill cheated! He pulled up his gun first! The pipe animation kinda bothered me, but it wasn't bad.

  • gasp* that was a mouthful. Well, when toad died his glasses seemed to fall in the exact right closed position. Mario and Luigi were kinda funny, but their mustaches were horrible! They were pretty obviously fake and seemed unnatural on the "wearer" of the mustache. The plumbing position was kinda funny, how Mario was plumbing, and Luigi was just aimlessly staring off into space. They make a GREAT team. Also, the argument made me laugh. "Hey! I like being a plumber!" and "If Bowser wins the war then there will be no more toilets to fix" The argument was pretty unrealistic.

New Super Mario (talk)

After waiting for over a year, I had finally gotten my hands on Fire Emblem: Awakening in February. I've been a huge fan of the series ever since The Sacred Stones came out in the 3DS Ambassador Program, and I know lots of members on the forums share my love for the series. Let's dive into my review of Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Now I figured I'd explain what the Fire Emblem series is about before we talk specifically about Awakening. Fire Emblem is a turn-based strategy game developed by Intelligent Systems. Fire Emblem games are set in medieval times. You play on a map with a small army of characters, ranging from nights, to paladins, to wyvern riders. Each map has a goal, usually to defeat the enemy units or the boss. The game is divided into chapters that further advance the story and gameplay. Don't think that these games are too easy! While easy or normal modes are available, if one of your units dies, they die for good. Of course, I sometimes freak out and shut off the system so the game doesn't save and they don't die, but then I have to start the chapter over. Each move in Fire Emblem is critical! Now I am not telling you a lot, simply because I want to get onto the review of Awakening, but to get more details on the gameplay, there are plenty of videos on YouTube and other sites.

But if you are looking to get into the Fire Emblem series, Awakening is a perfect game to start with. Awakening's story doesn’t continue from any other games, so no previous knowledge is needed to play the game. Additionally, there are lots of features that help new players, like loads of tutorials, and a “Casual” option where players will return if they die in battle.

The story is just awesome. Fire Emblem is one of those series where you get devoured into the story like a good book or movie. I won't talk about it too much though, since I think it's better if you experience it yourself, but a story hasn't been this good since the release of Skyward Sword for the Wii in 2011. The game stars Chrom, the prince of a nation known as Ylisse. The nation next to Ylisse, Plegia, calls for war against Ylisse, which cause Chrom and a group known as “The Shepherds” to stop Plegia. Not only that, but you get to join the whole story as well! At the beginning of the game, your avatar wakes up in a field, and claims to have amnesia. Your avatar is greeted by Chrom, his sister Lissa, and Frederick, one of The Shepherd's best soldiers. Even after the wars with Plegia, there is a whole new storyline that sort of continues off of that and I'm sure the story will keep you up all night. If you think the whole war thing sounds a bit cliché or something, trust me, I'm leaving lots of details out so you can experience it yourself.

One of my favorite things about the Fire Emblem series is the characters. You get so attached to certain characters in this game it's crazy! You can experience different character's personalities through the support option. In the support option you can gain relationships with other characters by fighting side by side, and you can even get married! Whether you like Virion and his hilarious “magnificence” or Tharja and her dark side, there will definitely be a character for you. Each character comes with a unique personality and class. I hope you pick up Fire Emblem: Awakening to experience the characters for yourself.

The new features in Fire Emblem: Awakening are awesome. One of these new features allows you to pair up units in the battlefield. By pairing two units up to fight together you can often get bonuses in hit points or whatever. Two units paired together do REALLY well if they are married, since they get more bonuses them people who aren't. The higher relationship the two units have, the more beneficial they will be when paired together. Like I said earlier, relationships can be built in the support. More support options will open if the two units are fighting together on the battlefield. Supports are a crucial part of the game because they eventually lead to unit's getting married, and having kids.

When two units reach the S support, they will get married. Married couples do awesome when paired together on the battlefield, so always make sure your supports are high. But the best part is, couples can have a child! You can recruit their child in an extra chapter. Children are awesome since they tend to be some of the best units in the game. The children can then marry other children, and even become more awesome. Whether you pair up units to create the best possible child, or just to get a certain hair color, this feature is one of the best things in the game. It also allows for a lot of replay value, since you can try different couples out and such.

Awakening also has some DLC that's great fun if you're willing to spend the money. Sadly, I didn't so I can't really say anything, but it seems a lot of the forum members have really enjoyed the DLC. You can also enjoy lots of free content available through SpotPass. I will say though, that Fire Emblem: Awakening is definitely my favorite Fire Emblem game, so I hope you guys consider picking it up if you haven't already.

Pros: DLC (if you are willing to pay), Marriage and Children, Awesome support system, pairing units up, awesome characters, unique classes, Super awesome story, great for players new to the series

Well well well, it sure has been a fair while, hasn't it, Mr. Levine? For a moment there you'd almost think BioShock Infinite was doomed to the bottomless pit of endless delays, kept breathing only by the life support of the almighty hype machine, but here it finally is in all its carefully sculpted glory. For me, it's in the shape of a Songbird statue because I bought the collector's edition because I'm a massive raving fanboy, and I fear removing it from the box less icky dust and pathogens threaten the sanctity of my waste of money. Oh God, what have I become; you did this to me, Levine! Bollocks to you and your beautiful cranial grooves!

So yeah, BioShock Infinite has been a game very high on my wishlist for a fair while now; an exception to my critical standpoint of never getting my hopes up for a game less it crushes them into pellets and feeds them to the sinister rabbits of the corporate prairie. So after its long journey climbing out of the pit, was it worth the wait? Yeah, I reckon so… what? It's a good game, even a great one, but something about it just failed to get me as riled up as all the anticipation did. I think I have a new way to evaluate relative game quality; length of time before release times consistency of hype, divided by trustworthiness of development studio (if even applicable), equals shit quotient. It's not an exact science, I'll admit, but it should do for any future hype factories to cool their furnaces every now and then.

Oh say can you see this gorgeous city that you're about to systematically destroy.

OK I'm stalling; BioShock Infinite! Taking place in 1912, we follow one Booker DeWitt, who in stark contrast to the protagonist of the first BioShock has a voice and appearance, latter of which you'd be forgiven for forgetting due to him seeming to be a pair of floating hands as far as the eye can see, but who am I to question modern American science, right? Knee deep in debt to an unseen organisation, he is sent to the city of Columbia to retrieve the lead supporting character Elizabeth in exchange for not having to do an honest day's work for once in his life. Except Columbia floats in the clouds, it's run by nationalistic white religious zealots led primarily by one Zachary Comstock who wishes the best for the “sinners” below via endless streams of fire and smoke, and Elizabeth is basically a witch, so all in all kind of a raw deal when you think about it.

Infinite seems to function as half-shooter, half-tourist attraction; you don't fire a single bullet until about twenty minutes in even if you're trying to play it fast, as the first impressions of the game seems to be about showing off the scenery and culture of Columbia. But honestly why wouldn't you want to spend that time taking in the intelligent, informed cultural beliefs held by such a perfectly reasonable, peace-loving, cosmopolitan society? The game seems to be approaching America's glory days from the left side of the history books, which may prove to be quite the jimmy-rustler for conservative gamers especially when a poster of John Wilkes Booth portrayed as an angel shooting a demonic Abraham Lincoln that's seen plastered in the office of a racist institution is one of the more benign insults. Not that I have much of a problem with it, being Australian and thus apathetic to everything Americans do, but I figured I'd mention that before anyone with a Filipino slave boy considers indulging in the latest in video game patriotism.

As if riding along the rails wasn't fun enough as is, this here is always a riot.

The shooter half itself is a whole different kettle of fish, by which I mean it's quite a ride, in many ways superior to the first BioShock although it does do the two-weapon limit thing I find so cumbersome in modern shooters. The game does make an attempt to compensate for this by providing heaps of different weapons to use, all of which are just sitting down in the streets readily available for casual use because this is traditionalist America we're talking about, but I much prefer having the choice of armoury at my beck and call. It does add to the tension, though, when you've brought a shotgun and machine gun to a fireball launcher contest and you need to run for the hills less you get your stupid hair-do singed off. Oh yeah, there are guns that shoot fireballs in this game, put that on the list of pros Infinite has over the fifty-seventh bloody Call of Duty clone.

Aside from the guns, the series continues its trend of offering an array of superpowers to use in combat, although this time instead of using more syringes than a backhouse disco club, all DeWitt requires for activating his crimes against nature is copious ingestion of ammonia! This has always been one of the best parts of the BioShock games, as being a competent shooter is all well and good but there's always something missing from my lead-overdose if I can't throw bees at people or trap them in a whirlpool tentacle. You can also find articles of clothing along the way that all have different buffs and debuffs much in the same way Team Fortress 2 does, albeit with less wallet emptying, although I never could figure out how to access the “maybe” pile whenever I decided not to bother equipping them, but that could probably just be blamed on homework deadlines forcing me to overlook some details. Although the necessary problem with these kinds of varied power-ups is that you're bound to find a choice few that just work for you and stick to those throughout the entire game, which was particularly true for me concerning the crow and water ones, which is perfectly reasonable because fuck yeah, murders of crows.

This only scratches the surface of what you can do in this game.

Another major improvement the combat has over the first BioShock is no more fucking stockpiles of healing items. The excess supply of health kits and EVE Hypos was the biggest detriment the series had concerning genuine challenge and difficulty curve, and while I'd hesitate to call Infinite the new Battletoads of first-person shooters, it's definitely a welcome change of pace having to actually play smart to avoid having your vital organs plastered to the clouds. Aiding that adequate game balance is that Infinite also doesn't make a hassle out of Elizabeth, who is the best kind of escort for not confusing oncoming bullets with airborne cupcakes (perhaps because enemies can't seem to harm her), for actively searching out resources and weapons for you in dire times of need, and being capable of employing her aforementioned witch powers to create a new range of tactical options during combat. See, Lizzie's thing is opening up dimensional tears that conveniently all seem to house assortments of weapons, cover, overhanging crane hooks, or medical supplies, and it can come in tremendously handy when the enemies try to hurl founding father robots your way and you have a readily available turret or rocket launcher all neatly tucked away in the airbourne closet to Narnia.

I quite like that the game takes the time to just relax and allow you to take in the atmosphere of Columbia and its people, as thin as it may be given its altitude, hardy har haaarrr. While other action games would have you knee-deep in same-y action at all times less they start giving the player some time to think for themselves and realise they're not having nearly as much fun as the loud noises suggest they're having, BioShock Infinite gives the player time to reflect on their performance in the fire-fights and distinguish exactly what made them special, and perhaps what they could do better next time. This feeds into the strong focus on character interaction this game establishes, with the relationship between Booker and Elizabeth being the front and centre of the game's intrigue. Which is particularly useful because aside from a fairly decent lead protagonist in Mr. DeWitt (especially towards the end), Elizabeth is the true star of this game as a fantastic character of her own accord, absolutely stealing the show any time she so much as makes a facial gesture, and a character arch with so much strength and an ending with such bitter sweetness that it's just impossible not to appreciate her adversity. Which I know isn't funny, but fuck off, I don't need to make a joke for every honest analysis.

She's just really awesome, I can't even begin to explain why.

But where I feel the game lets itself down is in the overarching story component, which is upsetting because that should be the strongest force this game has going for it. Goes without saying there are spoilers here on out, so either gear up or get lost. It's everything I typically like in a video game story; detailed in a rich, fascinating world with developed characters I actually care about, presented through the player's own interaction rather than cutscene exposition, and yet the more the story progressed the more I twitched my eyes and felt like screaming “Can someone please tell me what the fuck is going on now?” When the finite details of what should be a central aspect of the overarching plot are delegated to a collection of fetch quest items that you aren't likely to completely collect through a normal playthrough, I feel I'm well within my right to call bullshit on the narrative approach. It doesn't help that the game is built strongly around the many-universes theory that's alright in theoretical discussion but when applied to a dramatic narrative becomes more incomprehensibly jumbled up than the metaphor I had originally planned for this sentence.

Even the villains tend to be quite comical, which may be a consequence of the particular socio-political demographic this game is intended to piledrive into the floor, but crazy, overly screamy religious zealot who thinks everyone but him and his followers are irredeemably evil is a bit of a step down from hyper-calculated, restrained male caricature of Ayn Rand who only wishes to lord over a capitalist, libertarian utopia separated from the evils of welfare and love that plague the rest of the world. Although I guess that may have just been a lucky shot for Mr. Levine, since even the first game had its fair share of unsubtle Batman villains, and at least Infinite doesn't have that fucking awful last quarter of the game that felt like a washed up circus clown staying for dinner long after the party has finished and the alcohol has worn off.

But at the end of it all, do I recommend BioShock Infinite? Absolutely! It's fun, creative, insanely engaging, built around fascinating, likeable characters, and above all currently remains the greatest game of 2013 I've had the pleasure of touching so far. You don't even have to have played the first one to know what's going on, although don't feel too bad if you can't grasp that even with the first game under your belt because I sure as hell didn't and I spent the entire first paragraph droning about how I adore Mr. Levine's wonderful joy bits... I mean this series. I'd still definitely give the story thumbs up for being far better than most big shooters in the market; it just may prove far too dense and vague for the uninitiated to penetrate, but hey at least the shooting is fun and the superpowers are cool, and really, that's all you can ask for from a shooter. Well, that and a lemon meringue, but can't win them all, I suppose.

Hello everybody, it's Pyro. Welcome back to my incredibly unfunny reviews, stealing images from MCD since May 11th.

This month, we're reviewing VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV-fuck, just VVVVVV. I ran out of new games to review, so I decided to review this nice little indie platformer that MCD coincidentally did for Should Have Been last issue.

VVVVVV is a puzzle platformer, and is about this blue...thing named Captain Viridian and his crew getting stuck in Dimension I Don't Fucking Care How Many V's There Are, aka "Dimension VVVVVV". Their ship gets wedged into rock, and everyone except one gets randomly teleported somewhere. Viridian must find all his crewmates and get out of the dimension.

The main mechanic is gravity flipping. You flip yourself with any button on the keyboard, practically. There's no jump button or any jazz like that - just tedious gravity flipping. You use this to dodge traffic signs and spikes, and to advance in the game. The mechanic is very simple, and is used in creative ways - in one part, rooms wrap around in directions and you have to flip through the two room boundaries to get out. I have no idea if I worded that right, though.

There are many "levels", which are colored areas with a specific gimmick and a crew member to rescue. For example, the Warp Zone has wrapping levels and warp tokens, and the Laboratory has lines that auto-swap your gravity when touched. There are conveyor belts and autoscrolling rooms, too. Other than the levels, the game has an open-ish world that lets you explore around and find the levels.

Plus, there are little shiny balls called trinkets that you can collect to access a secret lab. Some of them are difficult to get (for fans, "Veni Vidi Vici" might be your berserk button), and some are pretty easy to get. They really don't have any other purpose besides adding replay value and unlocking a achievement showcase and a minigame.

The one OH FUCK BIG problem with this game is that it's extremely short. Hence why this review is short - there's not that much to talk about after you've gotten down the main story. The campaign is condensed to a relatively small map, and even after that the two intermissions and The Final Level are outside of the map. There are "Time Travel" challenges, along with Flip Mode (flips the game vertically) and No Death Mode (take a wild guess), which I've heard is cock-pulling hard, but I never bothered to try it out.

Finally, there's a level editor! Yes, but don't go rushing to your 3DS just yet - the 3DS version lacks the editor itself, but has many preloaded DLCs with maps, unlike the PC version, where the map in the menu just says "NO SIGNAL", like the intermissions and The Final Level. However, it's never fun to be stuck with only a few DLC packs. The level editor is very easy to use, and even the scripting is ridiculously easy once you know the commands. I've made some DLC myself, but it's unfinished and has no scripted events outside of "make the gravity lines disappear!" puzzles and music changes.

Overall, VVVVVV is a very fun game, but its lack of lots of non-user generated content makes you get bored easily. Get the PC version if you plan on buying it - it's less expensive and has the level editor. Also,

Paper Mario: Sticker Star was on the Wii U rather than the 3DS?

Ah yes, let's take a look at the worst Paper Mario game to date. (not that it's bad, I just liked the other 3 more)

I mean sure, this game was the way for handheld gamers to get the Paper Mario experience, but let's get real. Can a handheld device really copy the experience of one of (in my opinion) the greatest video game series of all time, when all of the previously launched titles were on a console?! The answer is...

NO!

Now I'll rant about all the things that were wrong with Sticker Star:

1. What's up with these levels? I have to admit, I never liked the fact of an RPG using platformer style levels. I mean, it was ok in SPM because the game was half-platformer, but why Sticker Star?
2. Mini-quests
I have to do this then that then this, and I end up back where I started, boooooooo.
3. Flat
To be honest, Sticker Star's presentation was bad, in 2D it's flat, 3D it's blurry.
4. Lame jokes
5. Hey! Where are the cool characters from the previous games?
Really now, Sticker Star didn't have any PM exclusive characters, which doesn't make it unique at all. I mean, don't toads get a little boring after a while (by this I mean a lot boring after 2 seconds).
6. What do you mean, I can't attack?!
Let's face it, the battle system in this game, was, to be nice, flat-out horrible. Say, why use that fancy attack when you can use an item, to just JUMP ON YOUR OPPONENT! Why must it be this way?
7. The Partners
The Partners in this game were the worst I've ever seen, NOT! I can't even see them, you know why? THERE ARE NONE! Nice job removing the very thing that makes me love this series so much Nintendo! I mean seriously, I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO BEING ABLE TO FINALLY CONTROL A CHAIN CHOMP!

Of these, half could be fixed by sending it to the Wii U and it's updated memory and better overall quality design. A Wii U version of Paper Mario is probably going to come out eventually, but I really wish Sticker Star was on the Wii U.

If Sticker Star had been placed on the console I might not have gotten too lazy to play it after I had only made it to World 2 (Then again I stopped playing SPM at World 3). Honestly there are more things that the Wii U could bring than a simple 3DS, in conclusion…

Answer: It would have been a much better game

Hi, I'm Superchao, and at this rate I'm going to subcontract out introductions.

This month, I'm interviewing Shoey! Shoey is certainly one of the most... unique members of the community, and has certainly become very well known because of it. With his barrage of name changes, and his tendancy to be whimsical and unexpected, he's certainly left an undeniable impression on the users. But he's also been a solid wiki editor, and has even been made a patroller over there - as well as directing the Fun Stuff sub-team of the Shroom. Superchao: So anyhow! How did you find the wiki? I'm sure it's an exciting tale.
Shoey: well you see I was looking up random mario things (because I have that kind of time) when I stumbled upon the wiki (this was back when there were bears on the wiki)

Superchao: in my day we still had to deal with dragons and sea serpents

Superchao: No, but I fought a seahorse with the strength of 1000 bears.

Shoey: i'd give it a 7 out of 10 (mostly because we have both a dippy and an edo)
Shoey: but we also have an mcd which makes it lose 5 points

Shoey: They offer free donuts
Shoey: it's pretty much the same reason I wanted to be an admin

Superchao: Being a mod only gets you free crackers. The board is way too cheap.
Shoey: it's a combination of the fact that it's free prestige and the fact that you get to do something that solidifies your legacy

Superchao: Besides SMB3 and Nobunga's Ambition, are there any other games you'd really recommend?
Shoey: um give me a second on that one blocky

Shoey: i'd recommend Princess Tomato in the salad kingdom, DoReMi Fantasy: Milon no Dokidoki Daibouken, pokemon snap, super mario rpg, paper mario, and the Aladdin game for the snes

Conclusion

Honestly, there isn't much to say that hasn't been covered by the interview, but I guess it's worth reiterating that Shoey's definitely become one of the most unforgettable community members. He's certainly left a mark on the community, and is definitely someone worth getting to know.

Brawl Tactics

What's up, Brawlers? Welcome to this month's edition of BRAWL TACTICS!

This month, I will be reviewing the stage Hanenbow!

Hanenbow is an odd stage, to say the least. You create the music by making the tones on the leaves you're standing on for battle, and the effect is... very peaceful, to say the least. Until someone pulls out a Smart Bomb. Then it gets annoying real quick.

First things first. Hanenbow is a medium sized stage with three different plants growing for you to stand on. Be sure to only stand on the leaves as the brown stems are only part of the background. Due to the fact that the leaves are the only platforms to stand on, the sides of this stage are very shallow, and if you go offscreen, there's not much you can do to get back on. If you're taking a photo, remember that this stage has 2D properties like Flat Zone 2- if you adjust the angle of your shot, you will get a 2D picture instead of a 3D one like most other stages.

Don't take a swim here. Just don't. It's not the water you think it is. You won't float. You don't even drown, actually. You just fall. It's scary, like falling off a regular stage and running out of jumps to use to get back up. You can struggle all you want, but it's hard to get back up. I usually just avoid falling altogether. It's not hard, just try not to be a show-off and you'll be just fine.

Onto the leaves. Yes. Well. The leaves, they do move. You hit them, they move. You hit them repeatedly, they move up and down. You hit them with a Final Smash, they move up and down very quickly, all the while changing colors and making noise. You can imagine why some people might not like this stage. Me, I like the gimmicks. Once or twice a battle, I'll make the flower at the top of the right plant bloom. You have to turn all the leaves red, and it's really quite lovely. But, aesthetics aside, the leaves can be quite handy for collecting items. The top left plant will gather a lot of smaller items such as food and Screw badges just by being left in the flat position, and if you angle the right plant's leaves, you can get a pretty good collection of food on the lower leaves. Pokeballs pose a problem, though, since they bounce right off and into the abyss. So catch 'em all quickly before they're gone.

Final Smashes on this stage? No problem! It can accommodate some of the pickiest brawlers. Limited ranges, such as Luigi's Negative Zone work great here. Head to the edge of the leaves on the right plant, on the second or top rows, and you'll get great coverage of the stage. Need a beam shot with Samus or Mario? Head to the second level of the right plant and trap your opponents by angling your beam in their direction. Got a strike you need to nail on the first try? Link and Zelda's shots work well here. Pick a level where you can cross multiple leaves with one shot. Meta Knight need not run around in all directions, either. Trap your opponent on a single plant and move in for the kill.
