Mario Party 10 Wario Render[edit]

Hello, I signed up a while back, but never really posted. Hope I'm doing this right... I was curious to know if you have sources and can by chance find and update this Wario artwork from Mario Party 10 with the official highest-res piece you can find. The current on is lo-res and I know you and User:L151 seem to have uploaded a few hi-res official .pngs from that game. Thank you! MarioLandCitizen (talk) Sunday, January 7th 2018, 19:29 (EST/EDT)

I can't seem to find that one. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help. – Shokora 01:28, 8 January 2018 (EST)

PidgiWiki Coverage[edit]

I learned a few days ago that Bulbapedia covers PidgiWiki. You are a member of that wiki. Just thought I share that bit of knowledge with you. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 12:42, 14 January 2018 (EST)

Does this mean you're back, buddy? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:43, June 10, 2019 (EDT)

Hey! Not exactly, just lurking. – Shokora 21:59, June 10, 2019 (EDT)
So how are things? You left so abruptly it worried me a little. Tried PMing you on TSR but you didn't respond there either. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:15, June 10, 2019 (EDT)

No need to worry, we all have our lives to lead. I haven't logged in to TSR for a long time, sorry about that. I'm doing well, making progress in my degree, working and drafting my two books (one non-fiction, one an amalgamation). Tell me about you? – Shokora 06:01, June 11, 2019 (EDT)

Hey there![edit]

So, you're back. I didn't expect you to be back that early. But. Welcome back! I'm FanOfYoshi. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 06:34, June 11, 2019 (EDT)

Intent to continue[edit]

Greetings. I was wondering if you were still intending to continue your List of audio samples used in Mario games project? If so, then you are more than welcome to ignore this entirely. If not, could you please let me know? I will probaby end up deleting the extra audio files if you don't plan on keeping the project around. Thanks! Trig Jegman - 21:29, February 8, 2020 (EST)

Hey, thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately I can't commit to finishing that project. Anybody is welcome to adopt it and see it through. – Shokora 21:23, February 10, 2020 (EST)
Thank you very much for responding. I will try to hold on to these audios in an offline storage in case you (or someone else??) wants to try and use them later. Trig - 22:51, February 10, 2020 (EST)

Actually, I'd like to at least split off the complete information on that page to the individual game articles. Please allow me a week or so for that. Cheers. – Shokora 00:32, February 11, 2020 (EST)

Wario Land 4 Enterbrain[edit]

Hi, so I know this was quite a while ago, but I noticed that you added references to an "Wario Land 4 official Enterbrain Japanese game guide" in a few places like the Kaentsubo and Yūrei articles. I've been thinking lately that the wiki really needed to clean up foreign references to ensure they are all from official sources. Just for clarification, what was the name of this guide, and does it have the credentials mentioned here? Also, is the reference for Hotaru supposed to be the Shogakukan guide or the Enterbrain one? LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:15, July 1, 2020 (EDT)

Hello Link! Apologies about the slight delay in responding. I do believe the Enterbrain guide is official; here is the front cover as well as the publishing information citing Nintendo on the inner page. Thanks for bringing up Hotaru, I think that non-specific reference was leftover from when I thought there was only one official Japanese game guide (I've since amassed three which all seem official albeit by different publishers). The Hotaru reference came from the Shogakukan publication, here is the page. Walkazo translated it for me back in 2013, she said "Firefly is simply called "Hotaru" (in katakana), which is the word for "firefly" - but it'd still be better to rename the page accordingly." Let me know if you need any more info or any close-ups/other pages photographed. I'll try and work through your other queries on the WL4 enemy pages too. – Shokora 09:54, July 4, 2020 (EDT)
Mister Wu told me that the phrase 「協力/任天堂株式会社」 or along the lines is the one to look out for, so it checks out. I don't need any specific scans, but if you don't mind, there are a number of images in the gallery that can probably also clarify their guide and page (I counted seventeen). Otherwise, I'll ask: the guides don't give separate names for the Jewel Piece Box and jewel piece pickup, right? I suggested a merge since the similarly-contained Health item [does it have a Japanese name?] isn't separated. I'm also curious if Cuckoo Condor's unhatched egg is mentioned, and same with the unhatched black egg. I imagine it's probably 「タマゴ」 generically, but it might be worth adding to the article at least. Lastly, are the legendary treasure names conjecture, and I take it there isn't anything else workable for the conjectural titles here (maybe the slot is fine)? Thanks for your time. LinkTheLefty (talk) 19:54, July 23, 2020 (EDT)
I'll need a few days to get back to you this- hang in there! – Shokora 05:52, July 24, 2020 (EDT)

Hi Link. I've updated the sources for all those images with the publication name and page numbers. Here is what I could find in relation to your questions across the three guides (see description for publisher/page no.)

The treasures aren't collectively referred to in an obvious way. In fact I do believe the legendary treasure names are conjecture. Here's what I'd ideally like to be done eventually:

After those are sorted, here's a list of the remaining conjectural articles which probably need to be eliminated using generic terms from the Japanese guide books, or otherwise from the internal files seen in the recent leak (do you have experience reassembling source code?)

That should account for everything! – Shokora 11:51, August 3, 2020 (EDT)
EDIT: Updating as files/potential names are found

The source code stuff is interesting timing... I don't see why not put it all to good use. I did notice that the pin enemy is mentioned in s_BOSS_YOKI_TEKI_IN_1.o, s_BOSS_YOKI_TEKI_IN_2.o, s_BOSS_YOKI_TEKI_IN_3.o, and s_BOSS_YOKI_TEKI_IN_4.o under the sound effects, so maybe "Teki" really is the correct name after all, as odd as it sounds? Otherwise, I agree with your proposed changes in general (well, I'm not so sure about moving Compressor to weight). LinkTheLefty (talk) 03:42, August 9, 2020 (EDT)
Judging by the naming conventions the source is using, Teki is probably a collective term for enemies. There's a whole folder called "TEKI" at sound\midi\SFX with sound effects for many enemies. I think the graphics for the pin enemy is grouped with the boss, I saw that the mechanical fish graphics were included with the Catbat bat on Cdoramori_hage.c. There's a lot to sort through- there's an object called Oshittuki_togedon.c which could be it.
Compressor seems to be a conjectural name, and we could either go with "weight" from the manual, or "piston" from the files (and the object is more accurately represented as a piston than a generic weight).
Shokora 09:26, August 9, 2020 (EDT)
Right, I thought you meant merging it to the current weight article. Yes, the article definitely needs to be changed, although for what it's worth, the Scholastic Warioland 4 book uses both terms at least once: on page 29 ("I went back and messed with that number block and made the mistake of setting it on 4. WHAM! This huge piston flattened me!") and then on one of several color pages between pages 32 and 33, which just references the Flat Wario profile from the manual ("Wario has been smashed flat by a weight."). Piston also shows up regarding The Curious Factory on page 57 of Nintendo Power Advance V.3 ("In the first area, Wario will have to busy himself with rotating platform machines and huge, smashing pistons."). Overall, "piston" seems to be specifically that object while "weight" sounds more generic. What I would do is go with piston, but either move the Wario Land II info over to Pouncer or split it into its own "weight (object)" article (D-Bat has a separate profile in the Shogakukan guide and is only identified by itself in Picross NP Vol.7, so it doesn't seem like its block properly belongs in the same article). The Yoshi's Story object is also referred to as a "piston" in the Player's Guide (pages 112 and 114), as well as the official website and Prima's Nintendo 64 Game Secrets, 1999 Edition (page 115), so it can stay for now. Additionally, I noticed some early names that may be worth noting, like Kondarā (Cuckoo Condor) is "CONDOKE" according to the sound files. Other than that, I was thinking of having "Wario's Treasures" changed to something like "Treasure (Wario franchise)", since it's more of a proper title and more accurately said that the treasures don't exactly belong to Wario until the player collects them. LinkTheLefty (talk) 13:31, August 9, 2020 (EDT)
Completely agree with moving to "Treasure (Wario franchise)". Regarding the different pinball blocks, I think I'll roll with (pun intended) creating the articles for them as they are separate objects with different functions. – Shokora 08:52, August 15, 2020 (EDT)
On the topic of treasure, I was also thinking of splitting the Wario Land 3 treasures, or at least making a "list of Wario Land 3 treasures in other languages", because most all treasures in that game have individual Japanese and English names and I'm not sure where else to put that information without cluttering the level articles. What do you think? LinkTheLefty (talk) 05:05, August 31, 2020 (EDT)

Hi Link. The WL3 treasures are an interesting case. I feel the table on the level article is too long to keep in its entire state. What I would do is keep the first five Music Box treasures on the level article in table form, as they are essential to completing the game, and having a {{main|List of Wario Land 3 treasures}} link at the top of the section to direct readers if they want to see info about the other 95 treasures. Of course, it could still get a section on "Treasure (Wario franchise)", but again the large table warrants its own article.

I think a "List of Wario Land 3 treasures in other languages" page could also be made separately, as we already have List of Kingdom Builder items in Super Mario Run and List of Kingdom Builder item names in other languages split (although I think presentation could be improved on the latter).

Kersti's advice[edit]

I saw your in-progress "Kersti's advice" page, and I like the idea. Would it be okay if I made a "Huey's advice" article for Paper Mario: Color Splash? Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 15:32, August 29, 2020 (EDT)

Hey, thanks very much! It's been a long time in the making, since I wanted to play through both a North American and PAL copy to record all the differences. You're very welcome to go ahead and make one for Colour Splash. I read somewhere you had access to the game's text files? That'll make the work much easier, because at least in Sticker Star depending on the order you complete things, not all of Kersti's advice can be heard on a single play-through. Let me know if you need a hand with formatting/presentation, I like that kind of stuff.
Shokora 01:51, August 30, 2020 (EDT)
I do have the text files for both Sticker Star and Color Splash, but only the North American versions for both. I don't think Color Splash has many regional changes, but I'll keep it in mind and will ask you if I need help with formatting. I'll delete this file once you've downloaded them, so please let me know when you do. They're in MSBT format, and my program of choice for opening those is Kuriimu. Downloaded. Looks fascinating, thanks very much.
Shokora 02:54, August 30, 2020 (EDT)
Ah, good. It might take a bit to learn where specific text is stored, but it's much easier than getting it while playing through the game. Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 03:13, August 30, 2020 (EDT)

Yeah looks like they're all in global_event, and I've already seen a couple that I didn't manage to trigger in-game.

Do you like the gifs I have been adding? thumb|Mario walking in Mario is Missing thumb|Bowser after getting his shell removed in Mario is Missing thumb|Bowser walking in Hotel Mario MarioIsMissingDos (talk) 09:00, September 1, 2020 (EST)

Not when they're on my page, but I don't mind them elsewhere. Are you making them yourself?
Shokora 09:05, September 1, 2020 (EDT)
I found the Mario is Missing walking animation online, but all the others were made by me. Do you know of any way to get the background from this image, as I have been after this background for a long time, as I would like to use it in a sprite comic. Here is the image that I would like the background from
Bowser without his Shell, as seen in Mario is Missing!

MarioIsMissingDos (talk) 10:02, September 1, 2020 (EST)

Hm, if sprite resource sites don't have that background, what I would suggest is going and disabling the sprite layers in the emulator where that was taken, or extracting the map data. I'm not experienced in DOS though.
Shokora 10:09, September 1, 2020 (EDT)

Oh ok, very little from the MS-DOS version of Mario is Missing has been ripped. Really the only things that have been ripped are Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser, Ludwig, but not his death animation, and nothing else. It's kind of sad that this game has been out for almost 30 years and none of the backgrounds, Koopas that are not Ludwig or Bowser, and the Koopaling death animations have ever been ripped. MarioIsMissingDos (talk) 12:00, September 1, 2020 (EST)

Weird glitch in the exclamation block image[edit]

Whenever I view the full image (ie, with the black background showing transparency), there are strange gray marks on the block's lower rim. Know what that's about? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:53, September 3, 2020 (EDT)

Oh really? I think I see what you're seeing, and it's not on the original from the site. It must have been the way I exported it. Thanks mate for pointing that out, I'll go and reupload it.
Shokora 14:59, September 3, 2020 (EDT)
Looking closer, it's almost definitely uneven transparency. There's a more subtle version on the red one. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:01, September 3, 2020 (EDT)
I see that now. I must have totally klutzed somewhere in the process, thank you.
Shokora 15:10, September 3, 2020 (EDT)
Oh actually, it was in the originals! Looks like whoever was processing them for the official site let their hand slip with the erasing tool or something... I'll pop a white layer underneath and patch them up tomorrow.

Electric spark[edit]

Do you think this is similar enough to Denki to share an article? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 12:03, September 16, 2020 (EDT)

Hey Don. They're certainly similar, but don't think they were intended to be the same. Denki and electric sparks fall from different objects. Denki are much faster and transform Wario into Electric Wario, and the other simply harms him. This is the case with Big Mouth and Utsuboankō, similar enemies with different names/appearance/behaviour get different articles. However in the case of Bee (Wario Land II) and Beezley, I feel they should be merged even though they have different English/Japanese names. Their appearance/behaviour is virtually alike, and they're clearly intended to be the same enemy.

Oh thank you for the compliment! I've noticed that you've uploaded loads of higher quality images in the past yourself. I work with PidgiNet to get all these high quality images out there -- I've been trying to expand it across to places such as Wikirby, Lylat Wiki, Pikipedia, and so forth (as all those need high quality ones too). I tend to closely inspect artworks as well -- that's how I was able to find small, subtle differences with the ? Block artwork for the New Super Mario Bros. series of games (see here and here). Hi there, RMV again. I again want to thank you for complimenting me yesterday. The reason I say this is because I've had some rough history around NIWA (big mistakes on my end, arguing with others, etc.; staff can tell you more because this isn't the place to discuss internal conflicts). Okay, so like long story short: I've sometimes wondered how Super Mario Wiki feels about me in the community as a fellow editor since I'm infamous around NIWA from feeling strongly about the Mario Wiki standard & carrying it everywhere I go (dunno why, I just have a strange obsession for it, and it has got on lots of peoples' nerves). Just wanted to let you know that your compliment means something to me & I take it to heart, thank you. :) Results May Vary (talk) 13:19, October 5, 2020 (EDT)

RE:Tim[edit]

I made it up because it would sound funny in Romanian, given that the character is a giant koi fish, koi sounds like coi ("testicle") and mare means big. Hence, coiu' mare--"the big testicle". I then cut it because the simple nature of the name "Tim" (used by DK Vine) is funnier. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 06:51, November 3, 2020 (EST)

Yo, was checking this wiki to check on if any new edit adjustments could be made on the Mario female character articles this afternoon only to see that you undid this edit of a quote that I took out because I felt it was a "generic quote" itself. Plus, I'm confused of the reasoning that you put there; why is that? I'm really baffled here. Please let me know A.S.A.P.; thank you. --M. C. - Profile | Talk Page 16:25, January 24, 2021 (EST)

Apologies, I accidentally hit enter before I could finish the edit summary. I meant to say 'not a generic quote'. I'd consider something like 'Hi' or 'Wohoo' as generic, but Shokora's quote actually represents her involvement with Wario in the game. I think it's better than no quote at all. – Shokora 23:01, January 24, 2021 (EST)

35th anniversary artwork[edit]

Heyo, some time last fall you and some other users uploaded some artwork from Nintendo's site for different games. Thing is, they had been heavily retouched (or made new) for use on that site, and as such shouldn't be grouped with the originals in their subject galleries, instead going per the actual chronology of when they were made (ie, putting the "35th anniversary" ones roughly between TOK and MGSR), as otherwise it could mislead users as to when specific designs or colorations debuted. Same reason why re-release Mario Bros. art isn't listed near the top of their relevant articles, see? Thanks. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:53, May 19, 2021 (EDT)

Foreign title italicizing[edit]

Hey, so there is an IP going around updating a few articles, and I think they mean well, but something I was confused about is their italicizing foreign game titles in the articles' names in other languages section. For example, the DK: King of Swing article had no italicization previously, which looks strange when the German title is the same as the English one. Are foreign titles supposed to be italicized? Romanizations are already italicized so it personally looks a little strange to me to have both italicized, but does seem like things are pretty inconsistent right now. Also, does this include translations of titles? LinkTheLefty (talk) 10:40, May 25, 2021 (EDT)

Hey Link! Sorry for the delay in responding, had a busy week. I've consulted another staff member for a second opinion on this, and it seems good practice to italicise the foreign name as it appears in official media, but not the 'meaning' because it's only a translation and not a proper title. I hope this answers your question.
Shokora 06:53, May 29, 2021 (EDT)
Unfortunately, it seems that people began to italicize Japanese titles in {{foreign names}} on articles such as Paper Mario, despite SMW:JP saying "Do not italicize Japanese script to indicate titles". Should we have a rule for which languages should have titles italicized and which not? --Dine2017 (talk) 02:20, August 9, 2021 (EDT)
My take is that non-Roman script languages like Japanese, Chinese etc. shouldn't be italicised, since it doesn't look very neat as you said and most of the time it doesn't work anyway (for example, I added italics to マリオ but it doesn't show, and when a simplified Chinese name includes a mix of simplified and traditional characters like 超级玛利欧世界, only some simplified characters are italicised, which looks bad). I've looked around to see what other sources have to say on the matter (here are some examples), and the conclusion I draw is that it's highly discouraged to use italics in Japanese; you might see slanted fonts used as occasional stylization, but the general concept of italics is not at all to be used like in English - and the same seems to be true of Chinese and Korean. Mario Golf 64 Picture Question[edit]

Hello,

I am curious, where did you get this Mario Golf picture from? Was this from the original game or advertising? Or was this image made after the game was created? https://www.mariowiki.com/Gallery:Mario_Golf_(Nintendo_64)#/media/File:Mario_golf_lean.png
The preceding unsigned comment was added by 104.191.68.137 (talk).

Hey, thanks for getting in touch. If I remember correctly, that image along with other 64-era stuff was included in an archival press release distributed by Nintendo Spain around 2016. – Shokora 07:02, July 15, 2021 (EDT)

Help![edit]

Hi, can you please help restore the Super Smash Bros. pages that I deleted? I was trying to revert them to their original names, but I made an error. Wario (Cowboy) from Mario Kart TourWildWario (talk) 08:57, September 7, 2021

Virtual Boi rippin'[edit]

What tool did you use to rip sprites from the Virtual Boy? I'm considering ripping sprites for Mario's Tennis for use here, and I wanted to know if there was a simple way or if it's one of those things that requires tricky isolating from screenshots. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:17, August 7, 2023 (EDT)

I've tried Red Dragon before, but I could never get the sound to work (and when I tried fixing it with the options menus, the emulator itself broke and refused to work again until the computer was rebooted). Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 11:05, August 8, 2023 (EDT)
A problem with ripping in that manner for Mario's Tennis is that the depth-of-field varies, so the opponent's sprite is squashed or stretched depending on their position. Ideally, the emulator would have some sort of OAM viewer to show what specific sprites are currently in play (for instance, Visual Boy Advance has one) or simply have a manner of extracting the graphics from the data (which appears to be what Ragey did for Mario Clash, and how the unused "Cassarin" name was found in MT). Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:00, August 9, 2023 (EDT)
So wait, how did you rip thisMedia:MT-Cassarin.PNG, then? Since it's unused, it couldn't be gotten with a mere gameplay screenshot. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:17, August 12, 2023 (EDT)

User Page[edit]

I saw your userpage, and it looks fantastic. I looked through the source code, and I came across a class that said "font-courgette". What's that??? Official LINE sticker based on Yoshi's Woolly World. Starry Tacos Conts · Talk 06:01, September 10, 2023 (EDT)

Hey, thanks I appreciate it. That's the name of the web font I used. It's also french for zucchini.

I don't remember my line of thinking when I formatted everything, lol. All I know is I can't touch anything in the first ten lines of my userpage or else everything will become chaos.

I saw you source code and I thought that it was really crazy with all the formatting and stuff.
