Mario contemplating how to get across in Lineland.

Lineland is the setting of Chapter 1 in Super Paper Mario.

Locations/Chapters

  • Lineland Road (Chapter 1-1: The Adventure Unfolds) is a grassy plain populated with many different species, though oddly enough most are not native to the dimension. It is also home to Bestovius, the wizard that teaches Mario how to flip.
  • Mount Lineland (Chapter 1-2: Afoot in the Foothills) is a mountain that houses Yold Town, as well as Thoreau the Pixl.
  • Yold Desert (Chapter 1-3: The Sands of Yold) serves as the first encounter with O' Chunks and the entrance to Yold Ruins.
  • Yold Ruins (Chapter 1-4: Monster of the Ruins) is where Mario and his Pixls had to explore before meeting Fracktail and getting the Pure Heart.

Chapter 1-1: The Adventure Unfolds

A typical instance in the "side-scrolling" games nodding to Super Mario Bros., Chapter 1-1 (which takes place in Lineland Road) opens with a recreation of part of World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros by entering the Red Door. (similar to New Super Mario Bros.) and has remixed music from Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World. For some peculiar reason, the Lineland Road has a population of Goombas, despite being a different dimension (although. since Goombas are found almost everywhere this isn't really a contreversial matter); however, after being briefed by Tippi on how to use the Tattle function, Mario quickly dispatched them, along with some Squiglets, and found Bestovius' house.

Bestovius, full of his mustache, was reluctant to allow Mario, whose mustache was "clearly unworthy" (in his eyes, anyway), to learn the was of flipping to 3-D. He went as far as to ask for 10,000 coins from Mario, stating that heroes shouldn't be cheapskates. Mario agreed, though he did not have enough (this would be impossible anyway as the maximum amount of coins Mario could carry is 999). Bestovius gave up and simply asked for all of Mario's coins(unless the player refused, otherwise Bestovius taught Mario for free). After the deed was done, Mario learned how to flip to 3-D.

Most of the remainder of Chapter 1-1 simply revolved around getting the player used to switching from 2-D to 3-D on a regular basis. In the end, Mario reached the end of the road and began his hike up Mount Lineland.

Trivia

  • The music is remixed from the Super Mario Bros. overworld theme and the Super Mario World overworld them.
  • Lineland Road's trees may have been inspired by those of Koopa Village from the original Paper Mario, which were similarly made up of green squares. Additionally, Koopa Village's trees are 3D.
  • Notably, the skies of Lineland are full of strange, surreal mathematical formulas, such as (translated into literary form) "Fire Flower equals Coin divided by Warp Pipe."
  • Level 1-1 has close references to Super Mario Bros. considering the first thing on the forground that the player see is a Goomba and placement of Items, ? Blocks, and Enemies.
