Giant Cannonballs are very rare moving obstacles found in Super Mario Bros. 3, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. U. They are much faster and bigger than the original Cannonballs, making them much harder to avoid. They always appear alongside (or in the same stage as) the smaller Cannonballs. In Super Mario Bros. 3, they only appear in Dark Land's first Tank level, and the Battleship level. The Cannons that fire the giant cannonballs resemble Warp Pipes, but they are colored black (blue in remakes) so as to not confuse the player. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, they only appear in World 8's Airship. In New Super Mario Bros. U, they only appear in The Mighty Cannonship from Soda Jungle. Even though normal cannonballs are absent during New Super Luigi U Giant Cannonballs reappear in the level Bowser Jr. Showdown.

Giant cannonballs,[1] also referred to as huge bullets,[2] giant bullets,[3] or massive cannon balls,[4] are uncommon moving obstacles in the Super Mario series. Giant cannonballs are fired from giant cannons, and they are bigger than regular cannonballs. They first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3, where they appear only in Dark Land's first tank level and the battleship level. Unlike regular cannonballs, they can be defeated using Hammer Mario's hammers. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, giant cannonballs appear only in World 8-Airship. In New Super Mario Bros. U, they appear only in The Mighty Cannonship from Soda Jungle. Even though normal cannonballs are absent from New Super Luigi U, giant cannonballs reappear in the level Bowser Jr. Showdown.

Giant cannonballs reappear in Super Mario Maker (and its Nintendo 3DS version) and Super Mario Maker 2. The player can enlarge a normal Cannon with a Super Mushroom, turning it into a giant cannon and enabling it to fire giant cannonballs. Unlike previous games, giant cannonballs are not faster than regular cannonballs by default; the cannon has to be changed from black to red in order to reproduce the faster speed. The second official course created by Bowser, named Bowser's Cannonball Run, involves Mario running to keep a red giant cannonball onscreen until the end.
