If you look carefully at the new version of File:PM Master Poet screenshot.png, you'll notice that the there is a small dot on the left side of the speech box. The Rice one does not have the problem. The author of the current Paper Mario TAS on TASvideos also suggests that the encoder takes advantage of both Glide64 and Glide64mk2. Both these points make it clear that there should be no rule over what plugin is "more correct" than another. My thought on your /sandbox stuff is that if another emulator (such as BizHawk) takes equally good screenshots, it should not be forbidden by policy. A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 08:31, 22 July 2016 (EDT)

First, BizHawk is now standard practice on TASvideos. Second, just because the majority of people use or prefer Project 64 does not mean the right of the minority people to use a different emulator must be sacrificed. A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 19:32, 22 July 2016 (EDT)

Re: Play Nintendo Artwork

Hey! Yeah, I've been thinking about it. And I decided that you were right to link+categorize. If an artwork for example, is released with one game and then reused for a later one, then we would categorize and link the image to both games (as the image would be used in both of the game galleries). The same precedent can be used here with Play Nintendo. Perhaps the artwork wasn't specifically made for Play Nintendo, it was reused for Play Nintendo. So yes, they should be categorized and linked.

'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 19:46, 23 July 2016 (EDT)

Yep, that's one example. I know there are many character artworks that are re-used between games too.
Also, may I advise you to archive this talk page?

PMTTYD aspect ratio

I was playing the Japanese version of PMTTYD; that's why the aspect ratio was 1.333 instead of 1.222. A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 21:39, 23 July 2016 (EDT)

On the other hand, Dolphin does say the aspect ratio for the English version of PMTTYD is 640x528, but it does not behave so. (I am still using Dolphin 4.0 because 5.0 requires VC Redistributable 2015, and the installation file provided by Microsoft doesn't work on my computer.) A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 21:50, 23 July 2016 (EDT)
To be honest, Dolphin states that both the resolution for the English and the Japanese version of PMTTYD is 640x528, yet it takes 608x456 ones, which is of the same aspect ratio as 640x480. Don't know why. I guess that it is due to automatic cropping that the aspect ratio changes from 1.212 to 1.333. But anyway 1.333:1 screenshots are being used on TCRF. Heehee, I thought someone would ask. I came across this, which is an official guidebook that was only released in Japan, but it details every single enemy from the first few games. Sadly the images are in black and white for the most part, but it's more than what we currently have. User:Wildgoosespeeder/sandbox

Hey there, this is the collective admin opinion on User:Wildgoosespeeder/sandbox:

  • It's a great elaboration on the policy. It would be good to link users to further, more technical reading which also acts as a support page to the policy. It should be therefore titled as "Help:Screenshots".
  • Displaying ideal screenshots organised by system throughout the page is great, as inexperienced users may otherwise not recognise which types of screenshots are the best quality.
  • At "Things to keep in mind", the restriction on "post-processing" effects could be elaborated in a couple of succinct sentences.
  • Some other minor alterations could be made to the overall wording, as well as the "Things to keep in mind" section. But these changes would be made later by the administrative team.
  • At the 3DS section, the direct pagelink to the Homebrew Launcher should be replaced with an indirect link (like those which you have made to "Emulation General"). The information about staying below a certain firmware version should be completely removed (to include this information, it is best to use a link similar to "Emulation General" instead).
  • When you feel that the page is definitive and ready to become an official Help page, then contact us again so we can have a final look at it. Then we'll give you some instructions on how to create and format the page so that it's suitable for official use. The page should not be moved but rather it should be created as a new page.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask me. --TucayoSig.png The 'Shroom 00:06, 26 July 2016 (EDT)

RE:Recent Uploads

Hello! The artworks I provided this wiki with are from a Japanese Mario character book, which you can find and download (almost) integrally from here. The original poster was kind enough to scan it and present it to us – shout out to him! In all honesty, I have no idea what the book is called, either because the front cover is not shown there, or because I don't know Japanese (I see there's a big colorful title on the first scanned page, but I do not know if that's the name of the book). In fact, the original poster did not scan any cover, so there's apparently no way to obtain the ISBN or anything like that from the book. However, I thought it looked like a worthy official source for the wiki, but if it's not (which I doubt), I think I'll stop uploading/base on any information from there until you manage to get some good proof regarding its authenticity. Indeed, I took example from user Qyzxf (talk) and decided to upload several samples from that publication. Thank you for your interest, nevertheless! -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE

TabuuandMasterCore's Personal Image

Hi the reason I put MasterCoreinsubspace (talk)'s image for deletion is because isn't it a rule that says you're only allowed to have 1 personal image for your signature, because according to here it says users can only have four personal images plus one for the user's signature. Ah. If possible, you should use anything other than browserhax. Browserhax is much less reliable than the others. --Hiccup (talk) 03:40, 29 July 2016 (EDT)
Secondary exploits are fine. Secondary just means you can't do them without homebrew or unofficial hardware - it doesn't reflect on the reliability or quality of the exploit. Do you have or can you get (get from a friend, buy it from eShop or shop or re-download it from eShop) any of these?: Freakyforms Deluxe, SmileBASIC (USA version), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Sky3DS (this is a card that can "simulate" exploitable (and many other) game cards, it would be piracy, but you are only using it once and not actually playing the game and you can delete the ROM afterwards), VVVVVV, Citizens of Earth, Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Cubic Ninja, Ironfall (old version)? --Hiccup (talk) 04:18, 29 July 2016 (EDT)

Re: Two Images

Hey. That is a perfectly good screenshot, it would not have been right to delete it. Also considering that it differs significantly from the alternate screenshot. I replaced the sprite with the screenshot, as the sprite was already used on the game's gallery page. So nothing is left unused.

They differ because one seems to habe been taken from the original version, and the other was adjusted to appear as seen on the Virtual Console. Plus the positioning and scene is different.

Special *-* images

Firstly, remember to use {{aboutfile}}. You're skipping it.

Secondly, bad filenames. I thought it was Super Mario Bros. Special maps at first. Always, always remember to include (an abbreviation of) the game title in the filename - e.g., SM3DL-Special *-*.png. - Reboot (talk) 21:34, 4 August 2016 (EDT)

Re: Revision delete request

Hello. Don't worry, your requests don't bug me at all.

I have chosen to not delete that particular SM3DL revision. It's not a duplicate revision, and the file history is small enough for a single mistaken revision to not be a problem.

Thanks, 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 04:48, 6 August 2016 (EDT)

It was a long time ago, but I'm very sure that I've seen other sysops deleting duplicate revisions of images before me. Although I don't know of anyone today who consciously thinks of deleting revisions. Of course, there should be strict, written standards on deleting file revisions. This could be entered into the Deletion Policy some time in the future, but I follow these general ideas:
  • Revisions which are an exact duplicate of a past revision (not counting compression), uploaded by mistake or through reversion warring, should be deleted.
    • I have seen many file pages where there are at least ten revisions of users just using the "reupload" reason to send comments back and forth. This is scathing to look at, and the file page should ideally only show revisions where the file was improved.
  • And then standards which are already strictly enforced, such as any inappropriate or copyright-infringing content (includes certain "strategy" content from published game guides).

Re: Reduction in art dimensions

Oh, thanks for bringing that to my attention. Re: Pre-release notice template idea

Hey. I'm not too sure about the idea. On one side, it would be beneficial in the same way as the {{MapImage}} template, which says to not re-upload or edit the image due to its usage as an Image Map.

On the other hand, our Aboutfile template should ideally be the way to inform users that the image is from a pre-release. I don't see the benefit of having both an Aboutfile description, and a big colorful notice template above it. In my opinion, we shouldn't have to make it any more clearer to users beyond Aboutfile.

Just as a side thing, with Porplemontage (talk)'s help to temporarily remove the category of {{game-screenshot}} and {{game-sprite}}, L151 (talk) and I went through images to insert the missing category. There was a lot missing and it was tedious. So tedious that the project was abandoned. Read up on it on his talk page (it's archived).

'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 18:00, 26 August 2016 (EDT)

Ah, so you guys removed the automatically transcluded category on some of the licenses, to then see what appears in Special:UncategorizedFiles. And then anything that appeared there was definitely missing a game category or something similar. Great idea! If I have a spare 36 hours, I could probably lend a small hand.
If such a large flood of files were to be edited one after, I'd suggest that Porple or Glowsquid enters anyone participating into the bot usergroup when we decide to resume that task. A "couple thousand" images at a time wouldn't be ideal for viewing recent changes, especially if we happen to be editing at a busy time for the site (probably around evening EST).

Hey, I have a question about file types, and I thought maybe you could help me. I know that .png images are more desirable than .jpg images because they are of higher quality. When I upload images directly from my Wii U - I have no better method of getting images, as far as I know - it uploads the image as .jpg. However, the picture appears to be of very high quality. So what does the file type mean specifically? And can I convert my .jpg images to .png? I didn't upload the image I captured to Mario Wiki yet. I was just experimenting. Thanks. Fawfulfury65

Okay, so this also an issue with the file size? I'm trying my best to understand. If I upload them as jpg, is it still able to be "compressed" (or converted or whatnot...), or will the solution ultimately be for someone to reupload everything that I upload (with a completely different image)? And even if converted to PNG, it won't be quite as good because it started as .jpg?
The Wii U takes really nice HD screenshots. I just wish that they could be as perfect as possible xD Not sure how I feel about getting a Wii U emulator and having to play through a ton of stuff again. Fawfulfury65
That's how I'm going to get my screenshots for DKC Tropical Freeze. I guess that's what I'll have to live with. I was hoping to take the opportunity of freely uploading whatever screenshots I wanted to make small gallery sections for each level. Anyways, thanks for answering all my questions and confusions. Images Tagged With Delete

I tried putting in the filename of the image replacements I uploaded, but I ended up showing the entire replacement image in the template, not the filename that should link to the replacing image. Area51Guard.png A51 Trooper 17:05, 7 September 2016 (EDT)

Re: Imagecat

Nice! I have a question, what does the "note" mean at Template:Imagecategory-reminder? I don't quite follow it. What categories are missing?

'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 05:03, 11 September 2016 (EDT)

95% of images that people upload from day-to-day are applicable to a game category. In the other miscellaneous cases of television/film screenshots, comics and merchandise, it doesn't hurt or take up too much time to give the user a specific example of what category they should apply to the images they upload. And the way the template is currently written, the user would then know the correct procedure for game images if they were to go on to upload those.
I don't think a link to Category:MarioWiki images would make it immediately clear to an inexperienced user. We're throwing gallery pages with the long abandoned "award images" category in the mix, as well as other categories which the average user would likely not use. And I don't think another subcategory to collect the "Images by ___" would be very practical.
Additionally, I kinda disagree with your recent removal of several subcategories from Category:Images by type. The categories "glitch" and "pre-release/unused" perfectly fit within the "images by type" title: there is no reason why they do not belong or be split only because they are used by copyright tags, especially since Category:Images by copyright status is already focused on splitting images by copyright.

Paper Mario screenshots

Have a message from A gossip-loving Toad:

"On YoshiKong’s talk page, you mentioned that the Paper Mario screenshots from RPGShrine were of terrible quality. What's exactly the problem? I happened to be playing Mario games through emulators and tried retaking a few of them, but quality didn't improve much so I stopped. As for the argument, I didn't deny that mentioning the crop is right. I was just saying that not mentioning the crop is not wrong."

--Zootalo (Talk)

A gossip-loving Toad's reply to the message you posted on my talk page:

OK, now I understand what you mean. In fact, these images are converted from GIF to PNG, not from JPG to PNG. Anyway, I'll be retaking the rest of them once I get my computer back.
P.S. Will you be retaking them? If so, I'll just wait for you to come up ones with angrylion rendering.
About cropping: If technical accuracy is at stake, it is much simpler to add a note to {{game-screenshot}} that says, for example, "The Super Mario Wiki does not guarantee that the screenshots will be presented in the same way as the hardware output." That rule is bad because not everyone get their screenshot by emulating the hardware and such people will be forced to compare their version from the hardware's version and mention something they have NEVER done.

Re: Moving Files

Greetings,

I see your point; however, I believe there are certain cases where image names should be changed.

Here's a copy of what I wrote over on Tucky's user page:

"I've fixed the 'Shroom error. Tucky can fix the user pages, although I'm personally not that sure how much it matters, considering they aren't particularly active.

Regarding the reminder you sent me, I find that moving image names (especially if they have a major typo in their name) can be warranted under some cases. While image names are highly subjective, basic spelling should always be correct. It's a nuisance, yes, but it's the professional thing to do." --Andymii (talk) 17:00, 17 September 2016 (EDT)

You talked to Steve about a broken file. I have a question. Is it not showing at all but is showing a blank page? Red Yoshi in a construction hat walking Yoshi the SSM (talk) 16:16, 22 September 2016 (EDT)

I suggest you change the size on the page (not the file) that the image is on. If that's not the case, then you're beyond help, possibly. Red Yoshi in a construction hat walking Yoshi the SSM (talk) 16:24, 22 September 2016 (EDT)

Re: Featured Images Conflict

Hi there, I'm sorry in the delay in responding to you.

I think it would be very unnecessary to replace that JPG, even if the version on PidgiWiki is indeed a source PNG. At the large size of MarioWiki's version, the face that it's a JPG does not matter (and the compression appears to be very low, as the quality is quite good). High resolution wallpapers like that, without transparency, are fine as JPGs. It's just not worth a PNG version, considering how many times larger the file size would be.

RE: Signature

Huh? I thought I tagged it with the Signature tag. It's in my signature already. See? What should I do since I've already created the signature? I don't know if it matters, but I created it using the preferences page as opposed to User:Luigi 64DD/sig. --Luigi 64DD.png (talk - edits) 15:52, 24 September 2016 (EDT)

I see. I'll change it right away.

I believe I did it right this time. So, now what? Will the image be taken out of the unused page? --Luigi 64DD.png (talk · edits) 16:31, 24 September 2016 (EDT)

Screenshot cleanup for Paper Mario

Sorry for using your talk page as a sandbox directly. After a conversation with YoshiKong, I explored the existing Paper Mario images and came up with the following info:

Screenshots that differ from hardware by border
1–10
11–20
21–30
31–40
41–50
51–60
61–70

and the ones on the star piece list

Ditto, but ones I'm unsure about
1–10

31–32
Images that are not screenshots but tagged so
1–10

21–30
31–40
41–50

I don't have access to the K64 article so that screenshot didn't make its way to one of the lists above.

I noticed that you are taking care of the existing screenshots on the wiki. Want to take care of them? My Android cellphone is inconvenient for editing the wiki. Thanks. -- A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 05:14, 27 September 2016 (EDT)

Drybone345

I find it annoying to have to read your messages, I'm new here so I need to be able to make edits freely, and plus, I think that the NIWA wikis don't allow this.

RE: Super Princess Peach Images

I'm screen-grabbing them from an LP I'm watching at the moment, but looking at the thumbnails of the videos, it looks like higher quality ones are coming in. Yoshi876 (talk)

Well the issue is, I own neither an emulator nor the game so YouTube is the only actual way I can get screen grabs for these levels, and I'd rather have that then a page with no images. Thankfully though, I do remember how to resize images so I can happily do that before uploading. Yoshi876 (talk)

DryBones345 concern

It's rather frustraiting that I need to read your messages, you can't just monitor my changes, I hope you will stop bossing me around and just be a normal user, just like me, and everyone else on the NIWA wikis.

Super Mario 64 HD

A new Super Mario 64 TAS came out and sonicpacker made an encode. It was HD but the HUD elements got rendered with no black outlines. Do you know which video plugin it used? – A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 10:41, 2 October 2016 (EDT)

Disappearing and reappearing

Oh hey Wildgoosespeeder! I haven't seen the wiki since the last time we discussed about something...I knew there was something, to the point that I wrote up a very big thing on a topic about it, but interruptions and going off the beat type of stuff. Well, unless it's not needed anyone (which would kinda suck that I typed all that up). An unofficial successor to Monster PNG? I'll definitely check it out and do some comparisons.

From my experience, believe it or not, the drawback of a super compressed PNG file is that it takes some more processing power to recreate the image as it is than a relatively uncompressed PNG image. It's subtle but a noted difference from my experience of compressing PNG snapshots from my mobile device. It's a bit like uncompressing a compressed ZIP file, with the best compression technique for the lowest filesize, but decompression is not necessarily the fastest if older compression techniques are used in this extreme manner. There's a reason why from looking in earlier iOS game files, Apple recommended to convert PNG files that are generally viewable to make it optimized for their iOS devices to the point that it won't render properly from viewing from non iOS devices.

Let's hope I don't disappear off suddenly, right now I'm rather preoccupied with my education. Did anything notable happened in MarioWiki and anything related to it between my time away from the place? --RAP.pngRAP... 04:04, 7 October 2016 (EDT)
