Quiz

Awards!!! Did you vote yet? If you haven't then make sure to go vote right after you do this quiz. I would tell you to do it now, but then you'll see the polls and it'll probably jog your memory about a lot of these answers, and it's not like I can stop you from doing that but I don't think it would be as fun. This year, I've decided to mix things up a little bit from the previous Awards-themed quizzes I've done. Instead of just picking the winners of the awards, the answers can now be any nominee that placed somewhere in the top three (including ties) in 2025! That way it'll be a little more challenging since there's a less narrow pool of potential answers for those of you with really good Awards-related memory, and it gives me more to work with since some of the same nominees keep winning over and over and I'd like to keep these fresh (looking at you, Luigi).

Easy

  1. This game hasn't been very well-received overall, but has spawned memorable quotes involving toast and spaghetti, among many others.
  2. Despite the popularity of the original game, this remake is one of the worst-selling games in the history of the Super Mario franchise.
  3. This is the only character originating from a Mario RPG to be playable in Super Smash Bros.! Okay, well, it's actually just a Mii costume...

Medium

  1. This iconic Mario Party minigame has reappeared three times. Nintendo branded one of these reappearances as a sequel, despite the lack of any changes in gameplay or theming.
  2. You won't find this power-up in a single regular ? Block, but you might still be able to snag it in a level from a Roulette Block.
  3. This enemy is good at copying the player's movements, but not appearance. It'll take the form of Mario no matter what playable character you've selected.

Hard

  1. It's not uncommon for the final bosses of Paper Mario bosses to have their power met or even outmatched by a secret superboss encounter. This one, however, has a lower max HP than one of the game's regular enemies!
  2. This game's data includes an unused giant Buzzy Beetle. It would've been the first game to feature one, but that distinction ultimately went to Paper Mario: Sticker Star.
  3. Prior to an update, an iconic feature removed from this game could still be accessed using a glitch. It didn't actually function properly, but that's beside the point. Name the game!
Answers

Easy

  1. Hotel Mario
  2. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey
  3. Geno

Medium

  1. Bowser's Big Blast
  2. Blue Shell
  3. Rift Mario

Hard

  1. Super Dimentio
  2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  3. Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS

How'd you do? Regardless, thanks for playing and don't forget to go vote in this year's polls!

Homicide Activity

Written by: Superchao (talk)

Hello, 'Shroom readers! Welcome to another edition of Homicide Activity, and I hope you know that you must kill! To quote myself, Homicide Activity is best thought of as a cross between a single-player version of the forum game known as Killing Game and a forum game version of the Hitman series of games. Each month, your fabulous host (that's me!) presents a framework where you send in a single attempt to kill a designated target without getting caught in the middle of it. Next issue contains the attempts and a new scenario. You, the readers, can vote on which one is the best, and we'll present the winner in the issue after that!

Ground rules are as follows:

  • You can't kill anyone except the target. NPCs can be removed in nonlethal ways if you can set it up, which leads into point 2...
  • Illegal activity getting spotted, such as attacking people in plain view or stealing things it's suspicious to pick up, causes the attempt to fail!
  • Clarifying questions are welcome and encouraged, and should be asked in the relevant forum thread. Attempts should be PMed directly to me on the forum.

To start, we have our results for the scenario from two months ago! By popular consensus, the preferred murderous scheme was Submission #2 - Keep it Clean, by Fun with Despair. Let's give him a round of applause, and not sell him out to the cops! I'd also like to give shoutouts to Salmancer for Submission #1 - The Shattered Plate, and Roserade for Submission #3 - Turn Up the Heat. Thank you both for playing!

Onto last month! I challenged you to ensure a fancy woman did not survive an airport visit. Here's the stories of how you'd go about that!

Submission #1

Once I'm through airport security, I'm going to pick up a novelty rolling suitcase, followed by purchasing several large bottles of alcohol to take with me on the flight. I'll stuff the suitcase with the bottles before continuing on. When I find the woman at the restaurant, very noticeable with her coat, I'll approach her and strike up casual conversation while we're eating. When she isn't looking, I'll discretely slip her ticket from her coat pocket and slip it into my own pocket. Then, I'll head off for her terminal. When she arrives later on, she'll realize that her ticket was misplaced, and talk with the attendents at the desk. Of course, they'll inform her that business class is full, but that she might be able to fit into coach. Begrudgingly, she'll accept her new ticket - seat C3, since I already know what seat is remaining.
Presumably, a woman of this much class is flying business, so I'll be able to board first using her ticket. While the flight attendants are handling the other business class guests, I'll slip down into the coach section and hoist my extremely heavy suitcase up above aisle C, closing the door to inconspicuously set the suitcase to fall. Once I'm done, I'll hurry off the plane, mentioning that I forgot another piece of luggage in the terminal. Hurry off to my other terminal and hop on my own flight before I get asked any questions. Sure enough, on the other side of the airport, she'll be opening the luggage compartment and getting smashed over the head with the overweight suitcase, succumbing to the head trauma.

Submission #2

Wear my best suit.
Enter a bathroom. While inside a stall, use makeup to lightly disguise my face. Find the woman I have to kill.
While the woman is eating, introduce myself as a employee guiding her to her gate. She will likely say she never heard of such a thing. Reassure her by saying something to the effect. of, "I get that a lot. Many people don't read everything they purchase." The fancy suit should help convince her.
Stay with the woman as she eats and continue to converse, building her trust with me. Once the woman is done, tell her I am taking her to the gate. However, instead lead her to an empty stairwell. Make sure to close the door to the stairwell after entering. Push the woman down the stairwell, killing her.
Take off the suit, throw it on the floor, then run to the bottom of the stairwell.
Exit the stairwell.
Duck into the nearest bathroom and undo the makeup with the sink.
Take a winding route around the airport to the gate for my flight, making it hard to track that I was in stairwell at the time of death. Removing my suit and makeup earlier on should lower the amount of suspicion I get.
Leave the airport on my flight.

Submission #3

I wait until the server is busy at tables, then I pop into the kitchen and say someone is complaining about the quality of their order. Ideally, this makes one of the chefs go into the dining area to deal with it while the other stays behind to continue working. I grab a frying pan and knock out the remaining chef before they can react, then I steal their chef uniform and hide them behind a box or something. Now that I'm disguised as a chef, I start taking cooked spaghetti noodles and tying them together into a singular comically long spaghetti noodle, which I then soak in alcohol. I proceed to tie one end of the spaghetti to the stove handle and secure the other in my pants pocket. Then I go out into the dining area like a good chef to ask the target how her food is.
As I leave, I slyly free the spaghetti from my pocket and drop it on the floor near her. I return to the kitchen and put the other end of the spaghetti directly into the stove burner, so it sets on fire and makes its way to the target like a weird Looney Tunes gag. Presumably if any of the other staff members are back in the kitchen they'll start panicking over the fire, giving me a distraction to swap clothes with the KO'ed chef again. I then leave the restaurant before the fire reaches the target, who will have a very bad time because of her fur coat. Before anyone knows it I'm headed for the gate to my own flight (or got caught by the sheer stupidity of this plan but you know you win some you lose some).

Three excellent murderous schemes. But only one of them can be the winner in the court of popular opinion! Here's the poll in question - go ahead and vote. Next month, we'll reveal who submitted which kill, and which one received the most votes.

Now, for this month: You are in a massive industrial warehouse, specializing in shipping hardware and tools. You are here to kill the supervisor of the day shift; however, he goes off shift in an hour, and you don't know where in the warehouse he is. You are currently dressed like an ordinary worker, of which there are many milling around and performing tasks. How do you commit your Homicide here?

Have fun crafting your attempts, I'm eager to receive them!

Anagrams

Written by: BBQ Turtle (talk)

Hiya all, welcome to this month's edition of Anagrams! One piece of important business to get out of the way first- VOTE IN THE AWARDS! And if you haven't already- SIGN UP TO PRESENT AN AWARD! OK, are you all back from doing that? Good, then I'll begin. This month, our anagrams theme is Mario Party DS, so it's time to start thinking of shrinking! Alongside voting and making your presentations over the next few months, if you come up with any suggestions for Anagrams themes, or perhaps specific anagrams I could incorporate into the section, please let me know on my talk page or in a PM to me on the forums. Right, if you haven't voted yet, I'll give you a little bit longer to do so, and for those of you who are board of waiting, here are the anagrams!

How it works...
Basically, this puzzle consists of solving the anagrams. Each month has a specific theme, which will give you a clue about what sort of words or phrases the anagrams will be. I've also included the boxes that the anagrams will fit into, so you'll be able to tell how many words it will solve to be and how many letters will be in each word, which should give you a hand too. You'll also notice that within each set of boxes, one of the squares is a ? Block. As you solve each anagram, note down the letter which appear on the ? Blocks, and if you can solve all of the anagrams, you'll also get a bonus anagram to solve from completing all of the others. I've included the letter configuration for this one at the bottom too, just to give you an extra helping hand. Best of luck!

Picross

Written by: Goombuigi (talk)

Welcome back to another edition of Picross! It's June, which means it's not only the beginning of the summer season, but this particular June is also the 30th anniversary of Super Mario 64! It was no doubt a revolutionary game in its heyday, and while it's up for debate as to how well it holds up today, I still quite enjoy the game. There's something about it that has a sense of wonder and discovery. You probably see where I'm going with this spiel - these picrosses are themed around Super Mario 64. With that said, let's triple-jump right into them!

For anyone who isn’t already familiar with picross, here’s a tutorial on how to play:

How to Play
Picross is a puzzle game in which the goal is to fill in all of the blank squares in the grid to uncover a picture. The numbers on the left and the top of the grid are the clues by which to solve the picross, as they indicate which squares should be filled in in their respective row or column. The number indicates how many consecutive squares are to be filled in, at any applicable place in the row or column. If there are multiple numbers corresponding to a single row or column, this means that the respective filled squares are separated by at least one blank space. They say the best way to teach is by example, so here’s an example:

Picross Tutorial Start.png

Let’s use this 5x5 picross as an example, and I’ll show my process of solving it step by step, explaining my rationale for every step as I go along.

Picross Tutorial Step1.png

The obvious first move here is to fill the middle row, denoted with the number “5”. Since this is a 5x5 grid, filling five squares of any row or column would fill every square in the row. (As a general tip, the first move you’ll want to do when solving any picross is to look for rows and columns with the number of columns or rows of the grid, or any rows / columns with a “0” (as that means no squares are filled in).

Picross Tutorial Step2.png

There are several moves that we can do next, but the one I chose to do next is as pictured above. The second-to-left column has the numbers “1 3”. Each number denoted the number of consecutive squares filled, with there being at least 1 blank square between them. So, using quick math, we can deduce that 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 3 filled squares = 5 squares. Thus, we can confidently fill in the full column.

Picross Tutorial Step3.png

We can repeat the same for the second-to-right column.

Picross Tutorial Step4.png

We can apply the same logic to the middle column, i.e. 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square + 1 blank square + 1 filled square = 5 squares.

Alternatively, since the bottom row has two filled squares with a blank square between them, and is denoted with the number “3”, then that means that there must be three consecutive squares. Thus, the square in between must be filled. The same logic can be applied to the top row.

Picross Tutorial Step5.png

Next, let’s take a look at the rows. Both the top and bottom rows are now complete, so the rest of the squares in each row can be marked as blank. The same goes for the second-to-bottom row.

Picross Tutorial Step6.png

We’re almost done now! Let’s take a look at the second-to-top row, which has two unmarked squares. Since the row is denoted as “1 1”, that means there are two single squares with one or more blank squares between them. There are only two unmarked squares here, so these must be filled.

Picross Tutorial Solution.png

And voilà! We’ve solved the picross and have been rewarded with a mushroom!

Hopefully, this tutorial was helpful. If you’re still a bit confused, the best practice is to actually solve picrosses on your own! A lot of the tips and tricks I showed here come down to intuition and practice. There are more advanced ones, but I’ll leave you to discover those on your own. Here’s just a few strategies you’ll want to keep in mind when solving picrosses:

  • Start by filling in numbers corresponding to the amount of rows or columns (or zeroes). For example, for a 10x10 picross, this would not only count rows / columns marked with “10”, but also ones marked with, say, “4 5” or “2 3 3”. This is because you have to account for the blank space of at least one square, and with quick math (4 filled squares + 1 blank + 5 filled = 10; 2 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled + 1 blank + 3 filled = 10), you can deduce the specific square that you should and shouldn’t fill in.
  • Always stick to steps that you are 100% certain of. Every strategy I’ve shown in my example is based on elimination and finding squares which I could fill in for certain. Although it may be tempting to take a chance, it could end up being a mistake, and without a mistake-checker of some sort, it can be difficult to figure out where it is, and you might even have to restart.
  • Use process of elimination to determine squares which can 100% be filled in. If there’s a certain row whose numbers don’t quite add up to the number of rows or columns, but are pretty close; or you have a lot of crossed out spaces in that row or column, identify every possible solution to that row or column, and determine if there are any filled / unfilled squares in common between all of them. If so, you can 100% fill those in.
  • Lastly, while there can be multiple ways to solve a picross, each picross has only one solution. Each of the ways you can solve a picross leads to the same solution. You can try the example picross on your own and experiment with different steps, but you’ll find that the end result is the same.

I hope those tips proved helpful! As I mentioned before, though, the best way to improve is to play some picrosses on your own. Mario's Picross and Mario's Super Picross are a great place to start, and there are numerous other picross games and websites that you can find with a quick Google search.

Lastly, if you want to solve the picrosses from this section, all you need to do is download the images. You can either open them in your image editing program of choice, or you can print them out and solve them with pen and paper. Happy solving!

Hiding Koopa

Written by: Waluigi Time (talk)

Hello there, 'Shroom readers! Yoshi and the Mysterious Book was just released last month, and uhhhh what is happening in there? No spoilers here, but there are some weird things going on in this game that was just supposed to be about Yoshi cataloguing different creatures! I guess the Koopas also wanted to do some discovery, so this month's Hiding Koopa features key artwork from the game. You know the drill, there's five Koopas to find.

Pixel Personas

Written by: Sparks (talk)

Welcome to another issue of Pixel Personas! June's here and congratulations to all the students out there for making it through another school year. Enjoy your Summer break and enjoy these three months while they last!

New to Pixel Personas? Here's what it's about: Pixel Personas is a game played in three rounds. In each round, I'll show an image of a Super Mario character (this includes enemies), but they're all pixelated! You (the readers) must analyze and identify who these characters are. Each round is tougher than the last, with more lesser-known characters and larger pixels, making it more difficult to tell who it is. After you make your guess, click/tap onhover over the card the image is on to flip it over and reveal the character!

No particular theme this month. You may start!

Nice work out there! Thank you for playing, and I'll see you next month! Bye!

Riddle Moves

Written by: Sentient freedom (talk)

Hi everyone! Man it's summer already? You really have to admire how time really does fly, and what's also true is that it's hot, very, very hot (which makes me even more glad I made all those slushies and ice cream). Because of that, I decided to make a riddle out of a very fitting type, so here it is.

How it works:
Below will be a riddle relating to a random Pokémon move; the chosen move will not be a Z-Move, a Max move, any of the moves that are exclusive to the Starmobiles, or any of the two Tera moves. What you have to do is use the information provided by the riddle to piece together what the move may be. I will tell you the move's type, so you can think about it a bit more. Anyway, enough talking! Here's the riddle, let's see how sharp your knowledge is!

Type: Ice

"I strike the opponent using cryogenics; a certain type that would normally wall me will now suffer at the hands of me. What am I?"

Hint 1

Just like Salt Cure, it is a food preservation process.

Hint 2

This moves does something no other move in Pokémon does, what is it?

Hint 1

It used to share the same freeze chance as most other Ice-type moves do.

Answer

Freeze-Dry

So, how did you do? Did you manage to get it right? Well, regardless, thanks for playing, and I will see you next month to test your move knowledge again.

Hex Puzzle

Written by: Aomaf (talk)

Hello and welcome to the June issue of Hex Puzzle! Let's get started!

How It Works
You need to use hex numbers to decode texts (or, if you are too lazy to decode the text yourself, copy the hex to a hex editor like HxD). When doing it manually, look for repeated hex values and guess at what letters they might be, or fill them in using letters you decoded from previous puzzles. For instance, 4D 61 72 69 6F 20 61 6E 64 20 4C 75 69 67 69 is "Mario and Luigi" or 53 6F 6E 69 63 20 61 6E 64 20 54 61 69 6C 73 is "Sonic and Tails". With these together, you can guess that 4D is a capital M.
Hex Value Table
Use this table to translate hex values manually. The column on the left correlates to the first digit of the value, while the top row correlates to the second digit of the value. As an example, "41" would translate to A on this table.

Answer
Sonic the Hedgehog, commonly referred to as simply Sonic, is the eponymous main protagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and the official mascot of Sega since 1991. He is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog whose trademark ability is running at supersonic speed, hence his name. Sonic is headstrong, cocky, and reckless, and he values freedom and peace. Sonic is often assisted by Tails, Amy, and Knuckles, and his arch-nemesis is Dr. Eggman. In the Super Mario franchise, Sonic appears in the Mario & Sonic series. It is a crossover between the Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises. (From the first section of the Sonic article)

Did you decode the texts for June? As always, thanks for playing!! And (maybe) see you all for the next Fun Stuff issue!

Where in the Marioverse is Carmen Sandiego?

Written by: FunkyK38 (talk)

HOW TO PLAY

Each issue, you will be given a case to solve and clues to use to help you find the solution! Use your Mario knowledge to crack the case!

You will begin each case at the scene of the crime, and you will be given three clues from passerby as to where the next hot spot is and what game it’s from. Using your knowledge of Mario games and the Super Mario Wiki, figure out where the crook is and go track them down! There are four locations each round: the crime scene (1) at the start, two locations (2 and 3) with clues, and the hideout for the crook of the month (4). Answers for locations will be given with the corresponding round, for example, the clues from the crime scene will lead you to location 2, and once you open the spoiler bubbles for location 2, you will be given the correct answer. You can open the clues for each location in any order you’d like, but be careful! You may encounter an incorrect clue that could throw you off the case!

Clues offered will give you a hint either about the next location or the game it’s in. Unlike a regular Carmen Sandiego game, you do not have to collect information about the crook you are tracking down.

Challenge round (optional):

-Find all locations and games correctly in two minutes or less

-Find all locations and games correctly without using the rest of the Wiki for help

Time to plant the seeds of hope, gumshoe!

"We're in a bit of sticky situation this time, gumshoe. We've been tracking Carmen closely for the past few weeks, trying to figure out what she is plotting to steal next, and I think she's caught on to us. A couple of her crooked cronies have made off with the hovering platform from the Mario Circuit stage featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Although this stage has been featured in both Smash 4 and Smash Ultimate, this theft occurs on the Smash Brawl stage where the layout of the stage cannot be modified. This stage is located in the middle of a Mario Kart track, and as such, fighters will have to deal with races going on during matches. They can shelter on this platform when the racers are driving on the track under it, but you'd be taking a risk if you are still on the platform when the drivers are moving over the jump just above. Now, we don't think this is her main goal- just a red herring to throw us off her trail. Unfortunately, we'll only be able to provide a couple agents as backup for you this time. We're counting on you, gumshoe- your team in the field and all of us at HQ are furiously tracking Carmen down!"

Planet Zebes from Super Smash Bros. Planet Zebes

CLUE 1

CLUE 3

"He brought his own platform, which is pretty weird. I warned him that it would get splattered, and he seemed upset about that."

CASE CLOSED

HIDEOUT ANSWER: Moray Towers from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Moray Towers in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

You've got a place to stand, now!

"There will be no more pilfered platforms! You did some excellent work today, gumshoe- leading your team through the other Smash stages to find the target. It ended up splattered in paint from being so close to a Splatoon match, but the team over at Mario Circuit are used to the platform being covered in paint- transfers from the kart when they crash is a common occurrence. They've already come to retrieve it from your team in the field, and your fees will be deposited in your account shortly. Time to head back to HQ, gumshoe, you and your team will be on standby until we can get a lock on to Carmen's position. You can use that time to write your case report! Until next time, gumshoe, keep your wits about you!"

Musical Quiz

Hello, 'Shroom readers! Here's an all-new edition of Musical Quiz!

Summer is finally upon us, yeehaw! I will no longer need to hibernate in The 'Shroom's basement (until next winter, that is). It was quite the idea to build my base of operations right next to the Incinerator and Printing Press rooms. A great amount of heat comes from those two rooms, which is perfect for keeping someone sensitive to the cold nice and warm during winter. Now, though, Waluigi Time (talk) will have to get used to the idea that I'm going to steal his office's balcony for my sunbathing sessions.

Anyway, while I plan my next schemes, how about checking out this month's Musical Quiz? The goal remains the same as usual: Can you guess which game the following soundtracks come from?

Have fun!
