Merge?[edit]

If these are exactly the same as Totsumen and use a conjectural name, couldn't we simply consider them Spoiled Rotten-themed Totsumen? LinkTheLefty (talk) 10:25, August 3, 2024 (EDT)

Agreed with merging. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 15:12, December 29, 2024 (EST)

Merge with Totsumen[edit]

Brown Block This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit this section or its subsections. If you wish to discuss the article, please do so in a new section below the proposal.

Do not merge 2-8
This one's a simple one. Here we have an enemy that is a) identical in function to another enemy, differing only in graphics, and b) completely unnamed. Should we really consider these a separate enemy, or just an aesthetic variant of Totsumen?

Merge[edit]

  1. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - Given how many things (including boss helpers) are named in the JP guides for this game, this one not being so is rather conspicuous in my opinion. It feels like splitting the blue versions of Mini-Necky in the Kreepy Krow fight of DKC2, which I also don't think should be split.
  2. Hewer (talk) Makes sense to me. The difference between this case and the ones the opposition is bringing up is the lack of any official identification for this variant, meaning we don't have proof that it was intended to be seen as distinct. (Also if it does stay split, it needs a less flowery conjectural name.) I'd change my vote if it were to be found that the variant does have some kind of official distinction, such as a different name.

Do not merge[edit]

  1. Altendo (talk) I don't see any issue with keeping multiple pages describing the same subject with only a different coat of paint. There are a lot of subjects that share behaviors and species type (like Bull's-Eye Bill and Cat Bullet Bill, the latter replacing the former in the Super Mario 3D World style in Super Mario Maker 2). Even if we were to just take it from the same game, Super Mario Odyssey is covered on the boulder page, but there are two variants that are merely visual differences and nothing more. While I can see some merit in merging all of these, and I know that this page has a conjectural name, I think that with everything considered, even if this is considered "an aesthetic variant of Totsumen", it still deserves its own page due to the precedent that the Bills, Boulders, and others set, which is that aesthetic changes are enough to warrant a separate page on the subject, and this is no different despite lacking a name.
  2. Camwoodstock (talk) We're leaning on this for right now. Mechanical similarities does not a merge make; there are plenty of other games who have enemies that behave identically, but remain split; Donkey Kong '94 has entire groups of them, and them remaining split is extremely non-contentious. Admittedly, this is mostly because they have actual confirmed Names, but we still feel a tad skeptical about merging this guy as a result.
  3. Sorbetti (talk) Per all. I would also like to revisit other pages that have merged enemies, just because they are functionally the same, ignoring the official names, such as the cat enemies in Bowser's Fury. I think we shouldn't always judge pages by the subject but by the information they contain. Based on how this page presents its information, it is consistent with the standards of other Wario Land 4 enemy pages, and it provides unique information (their unique appearance and participation in battle). "Totsumen is a red enemy who wears a spiky mask and is commonly encountered, while Eggplant Warrior is an enemy shaped like an eggplant, wearing headbands with knives on its head, and only appearing in one location throughout the entire game". This is how I see it.
  4. Power Flotzo (talk) Per all.
  5. EvieMaybe (talk) while combing the wiki for other reasons, i found this proposal that ruled that Wario World and Donkey Kong '94's enemy variants (which look different, but function identically) should stay split from eachother. it seems we already have a process for this, even though the case here is slightly different, as "Eggplant Warrior" does not actually have a name. nevertheless, i agree with this method of coverage.
  6. Wandering Poplin (talk) Per all. (I think they look more like tomatoes than eggplants, but that's not relevant to the point.)
  7. Rykitu (talk) Per all. I prefer this.
  8. Arend (talk) Per Evie. While I get that it's super annoying to have one enemy with a conjectural name who's shaped and acting similarly to another enemy with an actual confirmed name, and it'd be easy to merge the two to get it done with, I'm also getting flashbacks to the time when we, for some reason, consider clowns snowmen, and wolves as the exact same thing as these orange lizard guys from the first world, just because they act the same way (in fact, it's still jarring to me that we're considering these as Magon variants when them being comparables instead would be more logical). I do NOT want to go back to that time, so I feel that for consistency's sake, we keep these two entities split as well unless there's verifiable proof that they are indeed the same creature.

Comments[edit]

How come the eggplant enemies don't have a name, anyway? The name for Totsumen comes from the Shogakukan guide; doesn't that guide mention them during the Spoiled Rotten fight at all? Are there maybe other Japanese guides we can look through instead? ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 23:03, March 11, 2026 (UTC)

Shokora (talk) is the Wario Land expert and might know. On my end, I found something: I'm sure you're aware that source assets for the iQue version of Wario Land 4 were among those in the Nintendo data leak in 2020. According to the files, this enemy is just a flavor of Totsumen (romanized totumen). It's totumen_pinkie (Pinkie being Spoiled Rotten's Japanese name). For sake of reference, two other enemies that behave identically but have a different graphical theme are named menono and onomy, as opposed to having a qualifier like this boss helper to its base counterpart. If this proposal fails, I suggest renaming Eggplant Warrior to "Pinkie Totumen" as a development title. It never sat right with me that the conjectural name can be easily confused with Eggplant Man (I thought it was also referred to as Eggplant Warrior at some point). Maybe move Totsumen to the Totumen transliteration to match? LinkTheLefty (talk) 01:55, March 12, 2026 (UTC)
I actually wasn't aware at all that Wario Land 4 assets were found in the data leak too, let alone ones for specifically the Chinese iQue version; but that data leak was also huge, so I'm not surprised that things slipped through the cracks on my part.
Your rename suggestion sounds good and is fine by me. I think it's better to be treated as a variant of Tostumen rather than treating it as the same thing. I also ordered some WL4 guides via eBay, so maybe in a month or two I get to find more info myself. ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 02:28, March 12, 2026 (UTC)
Out of curiosity, where are the localization names for Wario Land 4? The Cutting Room Floor's own section for Wario Land 4's presence in the gigaleak is... Small, and doesn't mention it whatsoever, with it being unclear if it's just because the page was basically left abandoned, or there wasn't much they felt like covering in it. ...And then, a few hours later, we answer our own question, oops! We're able to confirm there's a file in the source labeled src/enemy/data/Ozako_totumen_pinkie.c, so either "Pinkie Tostumen" or "Tostumen Pinkie" would suffice. It's like Tetu Kantera where it was typed from another romanization system, likely Kunreisiki (was used more often natively and the Japanese government standard since at least 1954 until very recently) rather than Hepburn (has international preference and is in the process of officially replacing the former). You'll also see it suffixed as "Azako" in the enemy folder, though the "tekikind.h" file there lists the object with the "zako" suffix. LinkTheLefty (talk) 12:21, March 12, 2026 (UTC)

Enemy name/identity thing (post-proposal discussion)[edit]

Alrighty, I finally got my hands on both the Shogakukan and the Famitsu/Enterbrain guides for Wario Land 4. Here's my findongs regarding this "Eggplant Warrior"/Pinkie Totumen enemy:

  1. Neither guide lists the enemy in their respective Enemies sections (Shogakukan: Pages 14-16; Enterbrain: Pages 10-11), but the creatures are mentioned at the Spoiled Rotten boss fight (Shogakukan: Page 24; Enterbrain: Page 124). The enemy names seem to be identical in either guide from what I have seen, with the exception that "Menyari" is written with the 面 kanji, whereas the Enterbrain guide uses メン instead, and that the Enterbrain guide also gave each Menyari color a name (just "Menyari Yellow", "Menyari Blue" and "Menyari Red", nothing too special)
  2. In the Shogakukan guide, in both the main text and the first screenshot's caption, the enemies are generically referred to as 敵 teki ("enemy"), so that's proven fruitless. The guide also makes the mention of their similarities to Totsumen, stating that while their colors are different, they are basically the same as those (体の色こそ異なる が、基本的にはトツメンと同じ なので); however, at the same time, the guide also does not see these enemies as to be the same creatures as the Totsumen, as the Enemies section lists Totsumen to only appear in the Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire passages.
  3. In the Enterbrain guide, however, the caption for the second screenshots calls them プチサイズのピンキー (Puchisaizu no Pinkī, "Petitesize no Pinkie"). I'm unsure if that's supposed to be a generic descriptor or not; the usage of の no makes me lean to one side, the fact that "petit-size" is written in katakana makes me think it could go either way. It's at least a lot more helpful than a generic "enemy" kanji.

So, what would be the best one to use for this enemy? Go with the source code filename of Totumen Pinkie/Pinkie Totumen, or use Petitesize no Pinkie from the Enterbrain guide? ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 19:02, March 24, 2026 (UTC)

Looking at the priority list, names from third-party guides released before Super Mario Galaxy take priority over names derived from internal data. We're not familiar with Japanese, so unless someone can vouch that that's a descriptor and not a name, we think it'd take priority.
