RULES
 1. Standard Template:Color-link-piped apply, of course. No spamming, trolling, vandalizing, removing comments, etc. Please follow the rules, your comment will get removed otherwise. You don't have to sign your comments here, but it'll make it easier for me to get back to you if you do.
 2. No swearing or obscenity. These words will get edited out ASAP.
 3. Please don't ask why I reverted or corrected your edit. Usually, I have a good reason and can back it up. Take a look at Template:Color-link-piped or the page history for more information regarding your edit, if available. If you must, you can ask for clarification, but only if you provide more than "Why did you delete my edit?!" (which will get removed).
 4. Questions about my Power Master games and/or YouTube videos are fine. There are other places for those kinds of talk, of course, but I don't mind them on here.
 5. Any questions relating to a different wiki, please post on my talk page there. If you're here to complain about a block I gave you on other wikis, your comment will be removed. Though if you need my immediate attention elsewhere, you can notify me here (or Discord), as I'm more active here than anywhere else.
 6. I'm a friendly guy and am willing to engage in friendly conversation, so long as the sections don't become too excessive. If a topic header already exists for your question, please post under that.
 7. I will archive once this talk page reaches 100 messages. Please do not make any message telling me to archive. It's a waste of a notification, and it will be removed.
 8. Unless it's an important response you should know about or if I started the conversation on your page, I will respond here.
 9. I welcome friendship, but only if I know you well enough.
 10. I'm all for helping for with games, so long as I own it or the guide! Otherwise, I probably won't be able to help much.

Invalid vote?

Hi, I know Ghost Jam's vote on this proposal I initiated used to be valid due to it being rushed out and having an overflow of options as a result at the time, but now it's not since I learned from some of my mistakes and changed it again to just featuring three options. Is it okay if I just go ahead and strike through it? Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 22:34, 22 December 2018 (EST)

You should message Ghost Jam. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:35, 22 December 2018 (EST)
I'll try messaging him using a copy-paste of the above message, but I thought I might talk to you first since he isn't that active anymore. I mean, since you're an admin, I'm fairly certain you could start a discussion on whether to remove the vote or not, as per rule 5 of proposals. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 22:41, 22 December 2018 (EST)
Rules say you are to message the voter. He's active, so he should see your message soon. Otherwise, I'll ping him on Discord later. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:47, 22 December 2018 (EST)
Did you happen to contact Ghost Jam on Discord yet? I'm just wondering because he still hasn't responded to my message yet, and I have no way of knowing if he even read it. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 12:46, 25 December 2018 (EST)
He already adjusted his vote. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 12:50, 25 December 2018 (EST)

How Do You Do It?

Just out of curiosity, how do you keep track of the recent changes on this wiki? Dwhitney (talk) 22:40, 23 December 2018 (EST)

Special:RecentChanges. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:51, 23 December 2018 (EST)

How do you track down a blocked user who edits under a different username? Dwhitney (talk) 19:15, 26 December 2018 (EST)

Staff members have a way to check user IP addresses. If there's a match with a blocked user, action will be taken. But IPs can be dynamic, so it may not be 100% accurate. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:16, 26 December 2018 (EST)

After I suggested you track down the user who added "Green Yoshi" to the Yoshi article, I was surprised to see you respond with that revision (which was done in 2008). How were you able to do that in a short amount of time? Dwhitney (talk) 20:47, 29 December 2018 (EST)

I went to the page history and checked the 200th (bottom-most) revision on each page, then moved on to the next 200th. When the "Green Yoshi" name disappeared, I knew it was within that specific 200 number range, so I checked the 100th edit on that page and narrowed it down from there. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:50, 29 December 2018 (EST)

Apparently, you admins pay attention to what we normal users add in these articles before we even save the changes. How's that possible? Dwhitney (talk) 22:58, 10 January 2019 (EST)

Uh, we can't? Changes can't be seen until they are saved, admin or not. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 23:00, 10 January 2019 (EST)

Here's what I mean: When I tried to save my changes to the Donkey Kong Jr. (G&W) article after adding a bunch of content about the Modern version, a message saying that someone else edited the page appeared, and I found out that the one who did it was Doc von Schmeltwick, who said in his edit summary that he was pretty sure I meant another Mario character (in particular, a gull instead of an albatross). How was he able to do that when my changes weren't saved yet? Dwhitney (talk) 23:30, 10 January 2019 (EST)

Oh, that is an edit confliction. It means someone has edited the page while doing so yourself, and beat you to the save, but what they saved conflicts with the information you were going to put in. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:28, 11 January 2019 (EST)

Better Image

If I find a better image of something and want to upload it on one of these wiki pages, and I allowed to delete the old image? Dwhitney (talk) 00:30, 24 December 2018 (EST)

You can't delete an image yourself, but you can mark the old image for deletion. If it's the same extension, just overwrite it using the "Upload a new version" button below the image history. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:35, 24 December 2018 (EST)

Reverted Edits

You told me not to remove a comma in a list of more than two items in a sentence. I don't think I did. In the sentence "Yoshi's initial design is more dinosaur-like, with a narrower, longer, more hunched appearance, and shorter arms," I previously removed the comma after "appearance" because the sentence really has only two subjects in the second phrase: "appearance" and "arms." The phrase "a narrower, longer, more hunched" describes "appearance," while "shorter" describes "arms." The former has commas separating interchangeable adjectives, while the latter has only one adjective. As such, I don't think a comma should be after "appearance." Please let me know if you agree.

Also, I'm not trying to argue about one of my edits you reverted (in particular, "Yoshi Egg"), but before I lowercased "Egg" in "Yoshi Egg," I went to this wiki's Yoshi Egg article to be sure. In the very first sentence of the article and in most of the article, it was spelled "Yoshi egg." If "Egg" in the phrase needs to be capitalized, are the "Yoshi egg"s in the "Yoshi Egg" article typos? Dwhitney (talk) 11:35, 24 December 2018 (EST)

I agree with the comma removal.
First instance of Yoshi Egg and in the page title is a proper noun. I don't think usages of "Yoshi egg" in the article are incorrect, that's likely what they were called in those games. The most recent spelling is "Yoshi Egg", but the article may need to be double-checked. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:42, 24 December 2018 (EST)

You changed the full name of Bowser Jr. from "Prince Bowser Koopa Junior" to "Bowser Junior" on the basis that it isn't stated in game. In both Super Smash Brothers for Wii U/3ds and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Bowser Jr. is referred to as "Prince of the Koopas" which is where the "Prince" comes from. His surname was taken from Bowser's page as was the formatting of his title. Due to this, I believe that his full name should be changed to "Prince Bowser Koopa Junior."

"Prince Bowser Koopa Junior" is not actually used in a game as his name, iirc. Doesn't matter about the speculation or theory. "Prince of the Koopas" is a title rather than a name. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:35, 2 January 2019 (EST)

Mario Riddle

Here's a Mario riddle I came up with. Luigi walks to Princess Peach's castle, looking for Mario. When Luigi arrives, he doesn't find Mario there. Luigi enters the castle and searches a number of rooms for him, but he doesn't find him. Afterwards, Luigi walks into the hall and sees Mario in the distance, complete with his red cap, long-sleeved red shirt, blue overalls with yellow buttons, white gloves, brown shoes, and mustache. Luigi calls to Mario but gets no response. Confused, Luigi walks up to him to make sure he's okay. Upon closer inspection, however, Luigi realizes that it's not the real Mario. How did he know? (Hint: He knew this without touching Mario) Dwhitney (talk) 13:48, 24 December 2018 (EST)

I'm stumped. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 14:07, 24 December 2018 (EST)

Answer: Luigi saw that the red cap didn't have an "M" on it. Dwhitney (talk) 14:25, 24 December 2018 (EST)

Does the answer make sense? Dwhitney (talk) 15:10, 24 December 2018 (EST)

Yeah, just wasn't able to get to that answer. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:12, 24 December 2018 (EST)

Game content

On this wiki's Rain Shower article, it says that Bowser throws paint balloons; in the rules of the game from Game & Watch Gallery 4, it says that he throws water balloons. They do look like paint balloons, but are they paint balloons or water balloons? Dwhitney (talk) 15:09, 24 December 2018 (EST)

If the game doesn't say anything about paint balloons, then yeah, make the change. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:12, 24 December 2018 (EST)

Which is better: "...the player gets rewarded a bonus dependent on how many unbroken eggs are on the field..." or "...the player gets rewarded a bonus depending on how many unbroken eggs are on the field..."? Dwhitney (talk) 21:35, 7 January 2019 (EST)

Probably the second one. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:10, 8 January 2019 (EST)

I'm trying to think of a word that describes the character Dynamite Jack from Bomb Sweeper, instead of just a "character." "Villain," "bad guy," "criminal," and "bandit" don't sound right. What word would you suggest sounds best for describing him? Dwhitney (talk) 22:37, 14 January 2019 (EST)

I'm pretty sure there's a word out there that means "person who makes bombs", but I Google is unhelpful. "Character" or "villain" fits just fine, but maybe "crook" could work? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:26, 15 January 2019 (EST)

According to a Nintendo wiki powered by FANDOM, the G&W game Tropical Fish was never released in Japan. But there's no link next to that info to prove it. Can you prove that that info is true? Dwhitney (talk) 13:11, 17 January 2019 (EST)

The Nintendo wiki says the same for Bomb Sweeper, Safe Buster, and Climber. But there are no links to prove it. Dwhitney (talk) 13:22, 17 January 2019 (EST)

Actually, we have the links on their pages already! The external link listed shows that the games were manufactured in Japan, but sales were only in USA and Europe. The Japan information should probably be removed. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:23, 17 January 2019 (EST)

I found a self-explanatory word for describing Dynamite Jack: "bomber." Dwhitney (talk) 15:22, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Praise

The rules of this wiki say not to tell admins what to do. Does that mean that I'm not allowed to tell you to "keep up the good work"? Dwhitney (talk) 18:02, 24 December 2018 (EST)

Nah, that's fine, but try not to fill up talk pages too much ;) Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:45, 24 December 2018 (EST)

About BF and FD

Since you've moved the talk since I've gone on vacation, I have to start a new section. Anyways, in the "Smash!" section of SSBU, the game itself lists those stages (and Big Battlefield) at the beginning with the SSB stages, instead of at the end with the new stages. While it can be argued that this was for easiness for locating, they could have just as easily reversed the whole layout to have new stages first. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:44, 24 December 2018 (EST)

I guess so, but they are Smash specific stages, not based on any other franchise. While, yes, the layouts don't change, the design is unique to each game, making the stage unique to each Smash.
I really don't know what else to add, so we may just end up talking in circles. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:47, 24 December 2018 (EST)
My point is that the game itself is listing them with the Smash 64 stages, indicating that they are officially qualified as returning stages, from that game, and listing them as new each time is now officially wrong, and not just factually. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:49, 24 December 2018 (EST)
They've been listed at the start since Brawl, it's just the order of the other stages that changed. Because of that, I don't see how the order of the other stages mean anything. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:51, 24 December 2018 (EST)
In SSBU, all the stages are listed chronologically by game. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:01, 24 December 2018 (EST)
Again, doesn't mean anything. BF and FD weren't named or selectable in Smash 64, and Big BF certainly wasn't available then. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 23:54, 24 December 2018 (EST)
It's a variation of BF. Either way, whether it's selectable or not originally is far more pointless than the position on the SSBU stage select. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:59, 24 December 2018 (EST)
I could ask people on SmashWiki what they think, or something should be said on Ultimate's talk page. I don't think we're going to solve anything with just the two of us. There's nothing that actually says they are new stages in text, but there's also nothing saying they're returning stages, either. That distinction would've been made in Brawl. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:02, 25 December 2018 (EST)

Help Wanted: Rewriting Articles

I notice that some of these wiki articles have boxes requesting the articles be rewritten, apparently because of loaded information. Perhaps I could help with that if I knew which sections you recommend be rewritten. I think I'll start with the Yoshi article. Which sections in it need to be rewritten to meet the wiki's writing standards? Dwhitney (talk) 09:12, 25 December 2018 (EST)

Well, "Green Yoshi" could use a citation. The Super Mario World Television Series and Fortune Street sections are specifically asking for a rewrite, though the latter is more of a stub (I could probably do something with that later). Otherwise, give each section a read and see what you can improve on. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:25, 25 December 2018 (EST)

So far, I haven't any luck finding a citation for "Green Yoshi." Perhaps if you track down the user on this wiki who typed in the article that Yoshi is sometimes specified as Green Yoshi, I could ask that user where he or she found that information. Dwhitney (talk) 22:15, 25 December 2018 (EST)

This was the revision that added it, but the user who added it is no longer active. Luckily though, according to his edit summary, it came from the Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island manual. So that's something! But a page number would be helpful, and whether or not it's referring to Yoshi or Green Yoshi. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:26, 25 December 2018 (EST)

The green Yoshi is called "Yoshi" on page five in the Yoshi's Island instruction manual, and the phrase "The Green Yoshi" is mentioned on page six, according to the YouTube video "Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island - Game Manual (SNES) (Instruction Booklet)" uploaded by Game Instruction Manual Retro. Dwhitney (talk) 01:10, 26 December 2018 (EST)

Awesome! Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:58, 26 December 2018 (EST)

I've read the Super Mario World TV series section on the Yoshi article, but I don't really see anything wrong with it. In what way do you want the section to be rewritten? Dwhitney (talk) 20:02, 26 December 2018 (EST)

I'm not sure, I've only seen one or two of the episodes. Maybe it's asking for someone to check if there are any missing episodes with Yoshi? It says Yoshi appears in every episode, but I'm pretty sure there are more than what's listed (maybe). The list could maybe also be moved to something similar to List of Super Mario World episodes featuring Mario? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:07, 26 December 2018 (EST)

On YouTube, there are only 13 episodes of the series, and Wikipedia also says that the show has only 13 episodes, along with seven Captain N ones. Dwhitney (talk) 20:22, 26 December 2018 (EST)

Oh, then maybe just a grammar check. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:27, 26 December 2018 (EST)

According to the Game & Watch Gallery 4's cast credits, the gulls are called Albatrosses, and the Gull article's title is conjectural. I think I'll change its title to "Albatross" based on that info. What do you think? Dwhitney (talk) 21:23, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Albatross is a redirect, so that would work. But can I see a source of some kind? And just the G&W4 info should be on a new page, not the WL2 info. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:44, 19 January 2019 (EST)

The only source I have for that info is the end of World of Longplays' YouTube video of Part 4 of 4 of Game & Watch Gallery 4. Dwhitney (talk) 21:54, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Okay, that'll work as a reference. Noticed it also has its name listed under Fire. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:03, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Should a new article be created for "Albatross" and the Gull content be moved to it, or can the Gull article be renamed? Dwhitney (talk) 22:13, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Gull should not be renamed due to the Wario Land II content there. The information on Game & Watch Gallery 4 can be copied over to the Albatross redirect page and be made into an actual article. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:20, 19 January 2019 (EST)

How would I merge the Gull article with the Albatross one? Dwhitney (talk) 01:43, 20 January 2019 (EST)

Not sure. Discussion on its talk page should probably happen, as I have not played either of the games to be much help with this. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 01:45, 20 January 2019 (EST)

Uploading Images

I'm trying to upload a better image of the Modern mode of the G&W game Parachute and an image of the Game & Watch Gallery 2 version of the game Donkey Kong. I copied the image address of each, typed in one of them in the URL address box on the "Upload file" page, correctly categorized it, and tried to upload it. The page said, "There was a problem during the HTTP request: 404 Not Found." I tried to upload the other image by repeating the above and got the same result. Do you have any idea what the message means? Dwhitney (talk) 15:30, 25 December 2018 (EST)

What's the URL? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:48, 25 December 2018 (EST)

The one for Parachute: 24822-game-watch-gallery-2-game-boy-color-screenshot-game-parachute.jpg

The one for Donkey Kong: 24820-game-watch-gallery-2-game-boy-color-screenshot-game-donkey.jpg Dwhitney (talk) 16:08, 25 December 2018 (EST)

Ah, the problem is the different file type. The images you are trying to replace are PNGs, but your replacements are JPGs. Honestly, best keep them PNGs. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:09, 25 December 2018 (EST)

Are you saying I can't upload the images? Dwhitney (talk) 16:12, 25 December 2018 (EST)

For one thing, the images aren't displaying for me for some reason, so I can't compare them :/ The images should remain as PNGs, there's nothing wrong with them currently. But if you can find a PNG replacement, that'd be fine. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:14, 25 December 2018 (EST)

I succeeded in uploading an image of Parachute (though I'll probably replace it with one that shows the player's score) and am about to save changes to the Parachute article. Before I do, how do I mark the image I think should be deleted? Dwhitney (talk) 18:15, 25 December 2018 (EST)

You mark something you wanted deleted with delete with an optional reason (replaced for example). The image you uploaded is very large, though. Any chance you can find one that matches the original screen size? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:18, 25 December 2018 (EST)

I typed in the size I believe the image should be on the article, and the preview page has it as that size. Dwhitney (talk) 18:22, 25 December 2018 (EST)

No, I mean the actual image size should be as close to accurate as possible. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:23, 25 December 2018 (EST)

I'll look for another image. Is there any way I can copy and paste an image address on my tablet if the only source of viewing the image is to go to the webpage, meaning I can view the image but not click on it to view its URL address? I found a smaller image but couldn't view its URL address. Dwhitney (talk) 18:35, 25 December 2018 (EST)

I don't use a tablet, so I'm not sure. Usually, holding down on something will cause a menu to show, maybe with a "Copy image location" option. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:37, 25 December 2018 (EST)

It actually worked! Thanks. I'll try to upload the image on the Parachute article, but do you think the Super Nintendo image should be on the article? Dwhitney (talk) 19:11, 25 December 2018 (EST)

You're welcome, and yes. btw, you have to mark the image for deletion on its own page, not on the article it is placed on. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:13, 25 December 2018 (EST)

What do you mean by a request for deleting an image should be on its own page? Dwhitney (talk) 19:22, 25 December 2018 (EST)

Has to be on the file page, the page where you put the aboutfile and category information. The file itself. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:24, 25 December 2018 (EST)

Do you mean in the summary on the "Upload file" page? Dwhitney (talk) 19:28, 25 December 2018 (EST)

You can edit the file page after uploading it. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:45, 25 December 2018 (EST)

I found some more G&W game screenshots that I'd like to upload, but I'm concerned that if I upload too many of them from a website, I'll get into trouble (as per the copyright box). Should I worry? Dwhitney (talk) 12:02, 28 December 2018 (EST)

I don't think so, as long as they're good quality and you provide the source appropriately. What's the site? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 12:28, 28 December 2018 (EST)

gamefaqs.gamespot.com Dwhitney (talk) 13:04, 28 December 2018 (EST)

Is it possible to upload images horizontally on an article instead of vertically? Dwhitney (talk) 13:51, 28 December 2018 (EST)

That would be the multiple image template, like how it is on Turtle Bridge. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:56, 28 December 2018 (EST)

Even though images can be resized in an article, why do you recommend not to upload very large images? Dwhitney (talk) 20:32, 29 December 2018 (EST)

MarioWiki:Image use policy says game screenshots must be taken as close to the original hardware specifications as possible. This is meant to prevent blurs and stretches. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:39, 29 December 2018 (EST)

Sometimes when I try to upload images, the page requests the file name be rewritten because it contains invalid characters, like "26%." Removing the invalid characters just makes the whole URL invalid, if I remember correctly. In cases like this, how do you rewrite a file name for an image you want to upload? Dwhitney (talk) 23:56, 16 January 2019 (EST)

The Game & Watch Gallery article has this under the "Character appearances" section: . Is this a mistake that should be removed or an unfinished image filename? Dwhitney (talk) 19:54, 19 January 2019 (EST)

For some reason, the rest of the filename was removed. I added it back. If something doesn't look right, it's a good idea to go looking through the history to see if an explanation can be found. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:42, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Punctuation in Image Descriptions

When we tell who's in an image and what that character is doing in it on this wiki, when should a comma be used after the character's name? Dwhitney (talk) 20:20, 25 December 2018 (EST)

You'd use a comma how you'd normally use it, I think. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:23, 25 December 2018 (EST)

I see some image descriptions with a comma after the character's name when talking about the game they're in or what they're doing (e.g., "Mario, in Parachute," "Yoshi, hammering a Paratroopa in Vermin...," "Peach, cooking in Chef," "Mario, jumping over a Goomba," "Toad, as a host"). Are the commas supposed to be there? Dwhitney (talk) 20:46, 25 December 2018 (EST)

They're not improper here, so whether they're used or not is up to the editor in this case. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:50, 25 December 2018 (EST)

Unable to Edit?

At times, I noticed that, when I tried to edit the really long articles, a message appeared, saying that the pages were "protected to prevent vandalism." At times like that, does it mean that normal users can't edit those pages at all, even on desktop? And are certain articles protected at times because users vandalized them in the past? Dwhitney (talk) 20:42, 26 December 2018 (EST)

Some pages are protected to prevent vandalism, but they're usually done at an autoconfirm level, which means you should be able to still edit them. Others may be administrator-only protected. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:44, 26 December 2018 (EST)
Certain pages are also protected because they are high-traffic, and certain redirects are administrator-only protected to prevent an unnecessary page being made out of them. Also, if you can't edit a auto-confirmed only page, it may be because you got automatically logged out due to inactivity.Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 20:53, 26 December 2018 (EST)

Some pages I'm talking about are "Mario," "Luigi," "Yoshi," "Super Mario World," and "Super Mario Odyssey," all of which I tried to edit and wasn't able to do so at times. I figured that if the edit button doesn't appear next to every section title on an article, as I saw on mobile view, normal users can't edit it at the moment. When I did see the edit button on all article section titles, I edited them numerous times. When I tried to edit them again a few weeks later, the wiki wouldn't let me, again saying the pages were protected. However, I didn't try to do so on desktop view. Can normal users edit protected articles on desktop view? Dwhitney (talk) 22:08, 26 December 2018 (EST)

You should check again. Unless they are admin-protected (and the ones you listed aren't), you should be able to edit them. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:09, 26 December 2018 (EST)

What're some examples of admin-protected articles on this wiki, if I were to come upon one? Dwhitney (talk) 22:52, 26 December 2018 (EST)

Usually MarioWiki: pages are admin-protected, really the admin protection is meant for policy pages. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:53, 26 December 2018 (EST)

Citations

The Octopus (Game & Watch) article requests a citation be added for proof of gameplay. I found proof in the game's instruction manual, but it's a picture of the pages that state it. Do you accept such a citation? Dwhitney (talk) 00:42, 27 December 2018 (EST)

Yeah, that should work. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:45, 27 December 2018 (EST)

How do I cite an image on an article without adding the image on it? Dwhitney (talk) 01:30, 27 December 2018 (EST)

Add a colon to the start of the link. For example, instead of , it'd be :File:Image.png. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 01:32, 27 December 2018 (EST)

Well, I did that, but it's shown on the article exactly as it is on the edit page. How do I fix that? Dwhitney (talk) 02:06, 27 December 2018 (EST)

I quickly figured it out. Never mind. Dwhitney (talk) 02:08, 27 December 2018 (EST)

If an article has a dead link, like the Mario article, should the link be removed? Dwhitney (talk) 19:14, 29 December 2018 (EST)

No, the template is there to ask for a replacement. Removing the link would mean the template is just there and not actually marking any link as dead. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:17, 29 December 2018 (EST)

What exactly makes a link "dead"? Dwhitney (talk) 21:06, 29 December 2018 (EST)

When it no longer links to a webpage, like a 404 page. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:08, 29 December 2018 (EST)

Strange, I distinctly remember clipping the file earlier. I guess Audacity just didn't want to export it that time. I re-clipped it and re-uploaded the file, so it should be fine now. Scrooge200 (talk) 01:25, 28 December 2018 (EST)

Your First Experience

When you first edited this wiki (not as an admin), did you ever get blocked? Dwhitney (talk) 21:16, 29 December 2018 (EST)

Nope. Never been warned, either (aside from image reminders). Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:18, 29 December 2018 (EST)

You claim that you first liked Super Mario 64 when you were two. Do you remember what you saw Mario doing that got you interested in him? Dwhitney (talk) 23:06, 5 January 2019 (EST)

Mainly just running around in a wide open space, followed by being able to explore a castle. I think it was the first time I controlled something on the television, so that experience was pretty surreal. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:22, 6 January 2019 (EST)

Replacing Lower Quality Image

Hello, I am new as an editor to the Mario Wiki. I believe as a result of this, I cannot overwrite some existing images which I have found higher quality scans of. (Specifically, on https://www.mariowiki.com/Gallery:Wario_Land:_Super_Mario_Land_3 ) I'm sorry if this is mentioned anywhere else, or obvious to common wiki users, I am very new to wiki editing. I did a scan of the help sections and could find nothing mentioning this. How do I go about getting the rights to replace these images? Or is there a way I can submit the source of the higher quality scans for a user with the rights to use?

Thank you for help and another question

Hello, thank you for your help! I don't really know why the file replacement option wasn't there before, but it is now. The file I am attempting to upload is a png, but the one I'm replacing is a jpeg. When I attempt to replace it, it points this out. Should I just upload a completely new file in this case, and replace every instance of the original? Thank you again for the help.

Ah yes. Something seemed to have happened when I uploaded it after I refreshed, so I reverted the file. I'll look into what happened. Also, do you have to manually resize a new image to fit the boxes it's in on every page?

Oh! I see what you meant now!! sorry, I misunderstood the refresh comment, Thank you

How can you tell who is a sockpuppet?

I want to know because in Wikia, we have so much socks that needs to be blocked. I'm impressed how you guys know who is a sock and who isn't. Mario1993 (talk) 17:03, 5 January 2019 (EST)Mario1993

Staff members can check IPs. If a new user's match with a blocked user's, then they are blocked as well. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:04, 5 January 2019 (EST)
So in Wikipedia, these "staff members" would be equivalent to a Checkuser? Mario1993 (talk) 17:05, 5 January 2019 (EST)Mario1993
I think Checkuser is a different role there. It usually is elsewhere, but on MarioWiki, it's integrated with the staff roles. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:07, 5 January 2019 (EST)

Organizing Info Better

I'm thinking about adding a "Classic Version" and "Modern Version" section on some of the G&W articles, such as Parachute, Turtle Bridge, and Vermin, to organize the content better, as seen on other G&W articles. If I do so, I'd also like to move the Classic and Modern images to their respective places in the articles. Do you think I should improve the articles this way? Dwhitney (talk) 20:15, 5 January 2019 (EST)

Yep, that sounds good. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:31, 5 January 2019 (EST)

Would it be okay with you if I were to move the Modern Ball images to the "Modern Version" section as a multiple-image template on the Ball article? Dwhitney (talk) 20:27, 14 January 2019 (EST)

I think one of the images can be moved up, but a multiple images template that close to the infobox may make things feel constricted. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:10, 14 January 2019 (EST)

Dealing with Bullies

Can you think of a time when you needed to take care of "bullies" on this wiki? Dwhitney (talk) 23:53, 6 January 2019 (EST)

Bullies don't usually come very often, but I probably shouldn't say more than that. Unless you mean Bullies, then no, not really. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:00, 7 January 2019 (EST)

Help Wanted: Adding Articles

I'm thinking about adding articles about the G&W games Tropical Fish, Bomb Sweeper, Life Boat, Safe Buster, and Climber, as a found info about each as well as images of their original ports. I believe I'll need help making the articles the way you want them to be, however. Dwhitney (talk) 23:47, 7 January 2019 (EST)

I think the only Game & Watch titles we cover are those that were based on Mario at first or have a Mario-esque modern version in a Game & Watch Gallery game. If those satisfy either, then they can be made. Otherwise, that's a no. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:10, 8 January 2019 (EST)

G&W games like Judge, Spitball Sparky, Flagman, and Lion weren't based on Mario and don't have Modern modes, yet there are articles about them. Dwhitney (talk) 01:17, 8 January 2019 (EST)

Hmm, something should be said about those then. Why are we covering them? Probably a proposal somewhere that justified their creation, but should likely be reconsidered if so, imo. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 01:28, 8 January 2019 (EST)

I'm guessing that if a G&W game is featured in a Mario game, even if the original game doesn't have any Mario characters or a Modern version, it should have an article. Dwhitney (talk) 01:51, 8 January 2019 (EST)

Flagman appears in Wario Land II, so it certainly counts. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:12, 8 January 2019 (EST)
Do Tropical Fish, Bomb Sweeper, Life Boat, Safe Buster, and Climber appear in any Mario games? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 10:49, 8 January 2019 (EST)

Yes, in Game & Watch Gallery 4's Museum, for example. Dwhitney (talk) 14:23, 8 January 2019 (EST)

Some of those are red-linked at Game_&_Watch_Gallery_4#Tertiary_Games, so I guess it's fine to make them. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 14:28, 8 January 2019 (EST)

Will you and any other admins please help me make the articles? Dwhitney (talk) 14:37, 8 January 2019 (EST)

The Manual of Style is a good place to look for help creating articles. Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 14:38, 8 January 2019 (EST)
I'm afraid I don't know enough about the games to give the proper information, but maybe someone else does. And if you need help, just let me or someone know. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 14:39, 8 January 2019 (EST)

The link for Tropical Fish goes to the Mr. Game & Watch article, and removing the link doesn't turn the text red. How do I create an article for a game if it links to the wrong wiki page? Dwhitney (talk) 15:49, 8 January 2019 (EST)

(The redirect doesn't even lead to the right place anymore, heh) At the top of the article, you will see a "Redirected from whatever", and clicking that link will bring you to the redirect page. You can edit from there. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:51, 8 January 2019 (EST)

I did it, but I'm not finished with it yet. When I get a chance, I'll work on it some more. Dwhitney (talk) 16:33, 8 January 2019 (EST)

Oh, well, I added the templates and categories before I got this message ^^ Should do as much as you can and post when you have everything, or mark a page with construction if you plan to work on it further. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:35, 8 January 2019 (EST)
A better method would be to create a user sandbox to store work on the article while it is being made. Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 16:37, 8 January 2019 (EST)
Aye, that'll work too. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:38, 8 January 2019 (EST)

Redirects i made

Are we allowed to at least create redirects about names that come from Super Mario Encyclopedia? We can't cite it, and i created redirects before asking. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 13:17, 9 January 2019 (EST)

We do usually create a redirect for every official non-article name, even if it is from a thing that is usually not cited, such as with Balloon Goomba. Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 13:20, 9 January 2019 (EST)
I'm asking the other admins, see what they think. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:23, 9 January 2019 (EST)

Early templates for proposals

Hello, I plan on making a proposal to make a template for new pages, and I have the code made. May I publish the template for use on the proposal only until the proposal passes, if it does (it can be deleted if the proposal fails) or wouldI have to wait until the proposal passes (if it does) to publish the template? (I can store the template of the wiki and simply use the raw code however). Also, as the proposal would be about adding a main page template, should the proposal be on MarioWiki:Proposals or should it be on the main page's talk page? Thanks in advance! Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 18:20, 9 January 2019 (EST)

You can post the proposed template in your sandbox or something and link there for the proposal. The proposal would also go on the Main Page's talk page, in this case. However, I think Porplemontage ultimately has the final say on what goes on the main page, proposal or no. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:23, 9 January 2019 (EST)

Image question

Hey there, I have been updating the preview galleries for characters that have them on their page as well as creating new ones for characters that have enough images to warrant one. More than once I wanted to add this image Tanooki Rosalina model cropped of Rosalina for her preview gallery but the edit got reverted by the same user because they felt an image taken from a screenshot wasn't suitable for a gallery. I was just wondering if that is truly the case or I csn go ahead and add the image again without conflict. Thanks, Sdman213 19:20, 12 January 2019 (EST)

This one is a good crop, but is there a better image, like a model? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:29, 12 January 2019 (EST)
No, only this image I found in her gallery... I wanted to use it to add variety to her preview gallery and replace one of her tennis photos already present. Like I've said I've tried before but the same user keeps reverting it. I find their point with only using official art odd since other preview glleries such as Thwomp and Wario have sprites in their preview galleries with no issue. Should I put her Tanooki image in? Sdman213 19:34, 12 January 2019 (EST)
I think the image looks fine. I have no problems with it being in the preview. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:37, 12 January 2019 (EST)
Great, thanks! Sdman213 19:43, 12 January 2019 (EST)

Blocking Users

Not that I'm arguing about it, but why did you admins decide that the first time a user gets blocked should usually be a period of two weeks rather than one? Dwhitney (talk) 22:55, 12 January 2019 (EST)

Dunno, never really looked for when that decision was made, if one was. That decision was made long before I was promoted. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:57, 12 January 2019 (EST)

What does it mean to vandalize a wiki article? Dwhitney (talk) 23:25, 16 January 2019 (EST)

Adding false or irrelevant information repeatedly or in large chunks are some examples. See also: MarioWiki:Vandalism. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 23:27, 16 January 2019 (EST)

When does an edit war occur, and did we ever have one? Dwhitney (talk) 15:15, 19 January 2019 (EST)

They happen a few times. An edit war is when a user makes an edit, someone reverts it, and the first user changes it back to their original edit. Talk pages should be used instead of reverting a revert. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:33, 19 January 2019 (EST)

You and I had an edit war, didn't we? Dwhitney (talk) 15:43, 19 January 2019 (EST)

When you first started off, yes. That's what you were blocked for. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:21, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Understood. Dwhitney (talk) 16:36, 19 January 2019 (EST)

In what situations would an admin chose to shorten a normal user's block time after that user was blocked? Dwhitney (talk) 16:49, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Blocked users can still send emails using the address on the MarioWiki:Admin noticeboard. If the staff team finds their reasoning valid, the block will be reduced or removed. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:02, 19 January 2019 (EST)

What's an example of a valid reason for a user's block to be reduced or removed? Dwhitney (talk) 17:32, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Unfair/mistaken block immediately comes to mind. Reduced or removed blocks don't happen very often, though. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:35, 19 January 2019 (EST)

Heart Bro

Hello, according to Supper Mario Broth as seen here, the Hammer Bros that appear in Mario the Juggler are called Heart Bros that have several unique pieces of unique artwork and as they have a unique name they would warrant a page, however while I do not doubt that Supper Mario Broth has found an official source of the enemy's name, I could not find where the name came from outside that post, as the post's sources are for the images itself, not the enemies name, and the American instruction booklet for Mario The Juggler named these enemies generic Hammer Bros., although a unique name may be in a instruction booklet from another region, however I have not found other manuals regarding Mario the Juggler. Would they still warrant a page as a conjectural name? Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 18:10, 17 January 2019 (EST)

Not sure. May be worth bringing up on Hammer Bro.'s talk page, as I know nothing about these guys. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:17, 17 January 2019 (EST)
The Heart Bro's talk page greatly favours merging it with Hammer Bro., so my I now merge the two due too a nearly-unanimous public consensus? (I could not find the Japanese manual online so it would be safer to merge the page now to prevent a page with a false name existing and being forgotten about) Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 17:43, 18 January 2019 (EST)
