Template:Infobox Luigi's Mansion 3 is an upcoming game in the Luigi's Mansion series for the Nintendo Switch, set to release sometime in 2019.[1] Unlike previous games in the series, the game takes place in a haunted hotel rather than an actual mansion.[2]

Story

Luigi, Mario, Princess Peach, and various Toads are invited to a hotel called the Last Resort.[3] Soon after they arrive, everyone but Luigi goes missing, having been turned into paintings by King Boo. To save them, Luigi has to navigate the many floors of the hotel by collecting the elevator buttons. He also needs to defeat the ghosts with the help of Professor Elvin Gadd, using a new Poltergust called the Poltergust G-00.[2][4]

Gameplay

Luigi's Mansion 3 plays much like the previous entry in the series, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. The Poltergust G-00 retains the basic qualities of the previous vacuums, as well as the Strobulb item and the Dark-Light Device.[5] It also introduces new abilities, such as slamming ghosts on the ground or into each other, firing a grabable plunger with the Suction Shot, and creating a shockwave or being lifted up with Burst.[2]

Gooigi, introduced in the Nintendo 3DS remake of the first Luigi's Mansion, reappears and is stored in the Poltergust G-00. Gooigi can be called upon to pass obstacles Luigi cannot, such as spikes and bars. However, it is weak to fire and water, and will lose all its health immediately if it comes into contact with them. Luigi and Gooigi cannot be controlled at the same time in single-player, but Gooigi can be controlled by a second player with the second Joy-Con controller.[2]

The ScareScraper from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon also returns, allowing for eight-player multiplayer to clear floors as quickly as possible.[2] The mode also features procedurally generated floors.[6]

  • Red ghosts with square heads that look similar to Slammers appear.[7]
  • Skinny yellow ghosts appear.[8]
  • Gold[9] and silver[10] variants of the blue ghost that act similar to Gold Greenies and Speedy Spirits appear.

  • Polterpup returns and serves as the tutorial guide.[11]
  • The debut trailer shows that the hotel is set in the mountains with a river, fog, trees, bats, and the full moon in the background. At the very top of the hotel, there is a purple gem.
  • Unique ghosts similar to Portrait Ghosts appear. Among them are an unnamed policeman ghost, an unnamed king ghost, and a film director ghost named Morty who tasks Luigi with finding his megaphone and later films a boss fight against a ghost in a kaiju costume.[12]
  • Luigi has a new device known as the Virtual Boo, which serves the same function as the Game Boy Horror and Dual Scream. It also includes an "E. Gadd Hotline" feature that provides hints on various puzzles.[13]

Rooms

  • A trashed room with many pizza boxes and a suitcase with Mario's emblem.
  • A hallway with cleaning supplies and numbered doors.
  • A dining room with a lot of food, some on the ground.
  • A Foyer with hanging pictures of Luigi, Mario, Toad, and Princess Peach, all having an "X" across them. In the back is a mail room, with a safe that needs a Strobulb flash to open.
  • A theater entrance, with a Hider-like ghost moving the rug underneath Luigi.
  • A garage similar to the one in Dark Moon, but with a red car rather than a blue one.
  • A production studio with various movie sets and televisions that function as teleporters.[4]
  • A medieval castle based room featuring a dungeon and an arena.[5]

References to other games

  • Mario Bros. (Game & Watch): The pizza boxes in the trashed room say "Since 1983," referencing Luigi's debut appearance in this game.
  • Mario Strikers Charged: In one of the hallways in the theater, a framed poster of Mario performing his Mega Strike can be seen.[14]
  • Punch-Out!! (Wii): In one of the hallways in the theater, a framed poster of Little Mac in his victory pose with Doc Louis and Sandman in the background can be seen. By using his plunger to rip the painting, a boxing glove will come flying out which looks very similar to Little Mac's boxing gloves.[14]
