“This is a Red Space. Try not to land on one. You'll lose 3 coins!”
MC Ballyhoo, Mario Party 8

Red Spaces, also known as Minus Spaces in Mario Party 5, are spaces in the Mario Party series. When a player lands on a Red Space, he or she loses coins (three to nine, depending on the game and the specific circumstances). In Mario Party 7 and Mario Party 8, a Bonus Star may be awarded to the player who lands on the most Red Spaces. Also, like all of the other spaces in Mario Party 8, the shape is different on each board, including the tutorial.

Also, in Super Mario World, Red Spaces indicate a level which has multiple exits. In New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Red Spaces represent levels that have yet to be beaten, including types of Toad Houses. If the player has beaten the level, a Blue Space appears on the world map. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a Red Space is flashing red, its corresponding level has not yet been beaten. If a Red Space is solid red, its corresponding level has been completed using the Super Guide feature.
