Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is a game first released in Japan under the name Super Mario Bros. 2, but was deemed too difficult to release in America. Nintendo then altered an unpopular game from Japan, Doki Doki Panic, to feature Mario characters. This game was also called Super Mario Bros. 2, causing much confusion. Eventually, the original SMB2 was renamed Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels in America, and the American SMB2 was renamed Super Mario USA in Japan. Unlike the very first Super Mario Bros., this orginal Super Mario Bros. 2 is a lot harder than you think, and Nintendo was right not to release this in America. This SMB2 has strong gusts, Worlds A and D, Bloopers out of water, Poison Mushrooms, under water Koopa Troopas as well as Paratroopas, Red Piranha Plants that would come out of their Warp Pipe even if you were by the pipe's side (because if you did that with a regular Piranha Plant, it'd stay in its pipe!), a Fake Bowser in Worlds 8-4 & D-4, Hammer Bros. that walk toward you & there's a lot more to that! In fact, Poison Mushrooms first appeared in The Lost Levels.

Nintendo never released this just for the Famicom Disk System. They released The Lost Levels as remakes for Super Mario All-Stars (and Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World) & Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. In the SNES remake, the graphics were modified to resemble the improved graphics of the original Super Mario Bros. appearing in the same cartrige. In the GBC remake, only Worlds 1 through 8 were released, and the strong gust was taken out. The graphics in this one were modified to resemble the original Super Mario Bros. game.
