Captain Olimar is the star of the video game franchise Pikmin, made by Shigeru Miyamoto, named after Mario himself (Olimar is an anagram of Mario, with an L added). In Super Smash Bros. Melee, he had a trophy which the player could only get when they used a memory card with a Pikmin savegame on it. He is also a new playable character in the Wii game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, fighting with the help of Pikmin. In fact, without the Pikmin, Olimar is very weak – he can't even use a Smash Attack. As such, Olimar has to constantly pick Pikmin out of the ground in order to fight.

The Pikmin may also scatter, which acts very problematic for Captain Olimar. It is unknown if they scatter by attacks from opponents or just naturally. However, Olimar can call the Pikmin back to his side, so as long as Olimar has even one Pikmin by his side, he can still fight. His other two specialties include throwing Pikmin and using them as a chain (as a Tether Recovery).

In his Final Smash he hops on his ship and takes off while Bulborbs come on the stage and start attacking the players. His "home" stage is the Distant Planet.

History

Pikmin series

Scavenging His Way Back Home

In his debut, Captain Olimar was sailing in space in his ship, the S.S. Dolphin, until all of a sudden, a comet crashed into it and sent it plummeting down into an unknown planet.

When he regained consciousness, Olimar finds his ship a wreck, and that the planet he was on has high levels of oxygen, an element deadly to his kind, and he only has 30 days before his life support system fails. While searching for his ship parts, he encounters the Pikmin, an entity of a unique fuse between plant and animal. The Pikmin are nearly extinct and are not able defend themselves from the predators of their planet. Upon meeting the Pikmin, Olimar leads them to defend and stand up for themselves, and in return, the Pikmin help him find the missing ship parts.

There are three endings to the game, however, the true ending would be the good ending, as Olimar can be seen saying goodbye to his new friends, and traveling back to his home planet in the sequel.

Trouble in Hocotate Freight

In Pikmin 2, Olimar discovers that the company he works for, Hocotate Freight, is in serious debt, forcing the sale of Olimar's ship, the S.S. Dolphin which is the only remaining corporate asset.

In shock, Olimar dropped the bottle cap he took as a souvenir back in the Pikmin Planet, which it rolled towards the company's remaining ship, which evaluates the objects as having a value of 100 Pokos, the unit of currency on Hocotate. After commenting that this is more than a year's salary, Olimar's boss sends him on a trip with another employee named Louie, back to the Pikmin planet to collect 10,000 Pokos' worth of treasure to pay off the debt. During the descent to the planet, a collision causes Louie's cockpit to burst open, and he is separated from Olimar. Olimar reunites with the Pikmin, and eventually finds Louie.

After several days of searching for treasure, Olimar and Louie scavenged enough treasure to pay the company's debt. But when leaving the planet, Olimar accidentally left Louie behind. Realizing this when he came to his home planet, Olimar, along with the President, goes back to the Pikmin Planet to rescue him.

After some searching and Pikmin gathering, the duo find Louie atop of a Titan Dweevil. Olimar, the President, and the Pikmin were determined to rescue Louie, and so they destroyed the Titan Dweevil. The three Hocotatians finally leave to their home planet.

Captain Olimar's Pikmin are attacking a huge R.O.B. However, they are so weak they do no damage—the R.O.B. simply spins around and all the Pikmin that were on him fly in all directions and turn into ghosts and die. Captain Olimar starts shivering in fear at the huge robot. A red Pikmin walks up to Olimar and taps him on the side. Olimar turns around and the red Pikmin points out the Blue Falcon speeding through the forest.

Captain Falcon jumps out of the Blue Falcon and then Falcon Punches the huge Robot right in his face. The R.O.B. then falls back destroyed. Captain Falcon lands back on the ground while doing a slide similar to the Falcon Kick. However, while he is sliding on the ground, he accidentally hurts Pikmin that came in contact with him and killed them all. Captain Falcon just stands there striking a pose wile Captain Olimar just watches as the wind blows a leaf by. Olimar and Falcon decide to team up to fight the Subspace Army.

Upon reaching the edge of the Island of the Ancients, they witness Diddy Kong attacking Primids and rescuing Donkey Kong. Falcon and a reluctant Olimar then decide to join forces with the Kongs, and upon reaching them, the Primids return with backup. Donkey, Diddy, Falcon, and Olimar manage to fight them off before they see off Falco Lombardi, who had helped Diddy in bringing him to the skift that Donkey was held on.

The skift takes Olimar and his crew inside the Subspace Bomb Factory, and they begin to move through it. They eventually find the Ancient Minister, along with Pikachu and Samus Aran. Ganondorf suddenly appears and commands the R.O.B.s in the room to detonate the Subspace Bombs in the room so he could create a large enough hole in space to fit a Subspace Gunship through. The Ancient Minister reveals himself to be the leader of the R.O.B.s and helps the other heroes defeat the Subspace underlings that Ganondorf sent out. Olimar, along with R.O.B. and the rest, escapes from the island before it is sucked into Subspace. All of the heroes then unite to take down the Subspace Gunship and enter Subspace. Unfortunately, Olimar and the others were doomed to be turned into trophies by Tabuu.

However, hope comes in the form of King Dedede, who created some badges that revive trophies into the original fighter. Olimar is rescued by Dedede and his team consisting of Luigi and Ness. With everyone revived, they are able to take down Tabuu and save the world.

Special Moves

Pikmin Pluck

File:Pikmin Pluck.jpg
The Pikmin Pluck.

Pikmin Pluck is the name of Olimar's Standard Special Move in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It allows Olimar to pluck Pikmin from the ground, allowing him to Smash Attack and use other Special Moves. So long as there is ground to stand on, Olimar can pluck any one out of the five different kinds of Pikmin, each with its own special traits (see Types of Pikmin), in a similar fashion to Peach's Vegetable attack. Olimar can have six Pikmin out on the field at one time. Pikmin Throw, Pikmin Chain and Pikmin Order can all only be used when Pikmin are on the field. Pikmin can easily scatter around the stage, and can also be defeated like any other character, comparable to the Ice Climbers. Kirby is also capable of using this attack if he copies Olimar's powers. However, since Kirby is only able to copy a Standard Special Move, and Olimar needs to use other attacks to attack with the Pikmin, Kirby instantly tosses his plucked Pikmin, rather than letting them travel behind him, but the Pikmins will slam into his opponents instead of latching on.

On a side note, in the Pikmin games, Pikmin cannot be plucked out of the ground at any time Olimar wants. They grow from seeds generated by Onions, which must be given Food Pellets to produce Pikmin seeds. Once a sprout appears, Olimar or Louie can pluck the Pikmin.

Pikmin Throw

File:Pikmin Throw.jpg
The Pikmin Throw.

Pikmin Throw is an attack in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, used only by Olimar. It acts as his Side Special Move, and can only be used if Pikmin are in the field (see Pikmin Pluck). When Olimar tosses the Pikmin at his opponents, they latch onto them, attacking them whilst holding on. This causes the opposing players damage counter to rise gradually, until all the Pikmin fall off. Certain Pikmin do more damage than others, while others have added effects, such as poisoning (White Pikmin). More damage will be dealt if more Pikmin are tossed at the opposing players. It is currently unknown if the Pikmin only fall off over time, or if the player can shake them off.

Pikmin Chain

File:Pikmin Chain.jpg
The Pikmin Chain.

Pikmin Chain is a Special attack attributed to Olimar in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It is his Up Special Move, and seems to be some sort of Tether Recovery. Pikmin Pluck must be used sometime before using this attack, as Olimar needs at least one Pikmin on the field to use Pikmin Chain. Using the Pikmin following Olimar, Olimar uses them to grab onto the edge of a stage if he's falling off. The Pikmin grab onto each others feet, acting as a Pikmin Chain, hence the name. The less Pikmin, the shorter the range of the chain is. Olimar can then pull himself back to the stage if the Pikmin grab onto the ledge. This move does damage and knockback to foes hit, and if Olimar is in the air, will pass through the opponent to grab the ledge. On the ground, Olimar whips the chain diagonally upwards in the direction he's facing, allowing him to hit distant foes. The damage and properties of the attack are dependent on the last Pikmin in the chain, as when he uses the move, the Pikmin assemble in reverse order.

Pikmin Order

File:Pikmin Order.jpg
The Pikmin Order.

Pikmin Order is one of Olimar's Special Moves in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It is his down special move, and does no damage at all. When Olimar uses this attack, he blows his whistle, calling any scattered Pikmin back to him. This can be very useful for when all of his Pikmin are wandering across the stage. The attack can also be used to shift the order of Pikmin in Olimar's line-up. This move is very important to Olimar, as it can avoid his lost Pikmin from getting defeated easily, thus, eliminating the need to pluck them again. Other than this, however, Pikmin Order appears to have no other use.

Final Smash: End of Day

The End of Day.
File:End of Day 2.jpg
The creatures appear.

End of Day is Olimar's Final Smash attack in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Meant to imitate the "end of day" event from the Pikmin games, Olimar rushes into his Hocotate Ship after collecting the Smash Ball. He then flies off into the sky, as the day suddenly turns to night. Olimar's ship goes completely out of sight, then a horde of Red Bulborbs from the Pikmin games start attacking opponents on the stage. These monsters continue to attack all the players on the stage, causing more damage the more players there are (4 players=47%) . However, an opposing player has a chance at stealing the KO, as Olimar is not on the stage to defeat the opposing players himself. This Final Smash is less powerful in a one-on-one match, but no one is capable of stealing the KO. After the Final Smash is done, Olimar crashes down with his ship, causing an explosion when he lands. This can cause heavy damage to anyone caught in the explosion, and a significant amount of knock-back.

This technique breaks the framework of the game.

Solid Snake Codec Conversation

  • Mei Ling: Snake, have you ever heard of the ancient Chinese story, "The Vain Ocean of Wealth and Splendor" from the Zhen Zhong Ji?
  • Snake: I've been waiting for the movie.
  • Mei Ling: Basically, it's meant to express the impermanence of all things. You know, like even when Captain Olimar has lots of Pikmin with him, they could all be gone the next moment. Those poor little guys--they carry, they fight, they multiply...and they get eaten. Olimar might have lots of company one minute and be all alone the next. It's so sad.
  • Snake: But he can pluck out more Pikmin anytime he wants, right?
  • Mei Ling: Well, yeah, I suppose so.
  • Snake: No one truly fights alone. Not even me.
  • Mei Ling: ...You're absolutely right, Snake. Good luck. I'm rooting for you.

Trivia

File:Olimar Costumes.jpg
Olimar's costumes, which some have a similar appearance to others.
  • Olimar was planned to make an appearance in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga as one of the characters that appear when creating new brews in the Starbeans Cafe. In this appearance, his dialogue was written in the type of text box that appears whenever Mario or Luigi get certain items, as though written in a log book like in the actual Pikmin games. He also names Mario "Marlio" (a complete anagram of "Olimar") and mistakes Luigi for a dangerous beast.[1]. However, Professor E. Gadd replaced all of the other characters in the final version of the game.
  • One of Olimar's costumes makes him look very similar to his sidekick, Louie as well as the President of Hocotate Freight.
  • In Yoshi's Island DS, a baby that looks like Captain Olimar appears in a few scenes.
  • In one of the sentences which Mei Ling says to Snake in the codec-conversation about Olimar ("they carry, they fight, they multiply...and they get eaten.") , it is a reference to the Japanese theme-song of the Pikmin, "Ai no Uta", which also appears as background music in Brawl.
  • A spaceship that resembles Olimar's ship from Pikmin 2 appears in Super Mario Galaxy in the Space Junk Galaxy.
  • His eyes never glow yellow if he has broken the Smash Ball, not even if he is attacked.
  • In Japanese, Olimar's name is オリマー (O-ri-ma-a), which are the characters for Mario, マリオ (Ma-ri-o), backwards (plus a long vowel).
