“Coming up with the music for World 1-1 in a new Super Mario title is the biggest challenge of all for us as the composers. it presents the same difficulties faced by the design team creating the opening course. But that just makes it all the more rewarding when you finally get it right.”

“This is the theme tune used in all manner of promotional videos. It's not quite a full big band performance, but is still impressive. The alto sax playing the melody adds its own unmistakable sound. Enjoy!”
Liner notes for "SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD Theme" in the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack

"Super Bell Hill"[1][2] is a musical theme composed by Mahito Yokota for Super Mario 3D World, where it plays in the level of the same name (albeit with an extended intro), Mount Beanpole, Really Rolling Hills and Pretty Plaza Panic, as well as the above-ground sections of Koopa Troopa Cave, Shadow-Play Alley, Bob-ombs Below, Switchblack Ruins, Gargantuan Grotto, and Trouble in Shadow-Play Alley.

An arrangement of the theme, with an extended intro from the level Super Bell Hill as well as a unique ending, is used in promotional material for Super Mario 3D World. This version is titled "SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD Theme".[2] An early take of this version, using synthesized instruments instead of live performances, is used in the game's E3 2013 reveal trailer.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

“A simple tune to ease you into the game, it doesn't have any shocks or surprises. Keep watching the title screen and you'll be able to view one of a total of six gameplay demos. Have you seen them all?”
Liner notes for "Title Screen" in the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack
“When we were asked to do a big band version of the main theme from the game, we knew it was going to be fun - but we didn't realise quite how much fun! We hope you enjoy the interplay between the sax, trumpet and trombone.”
Liner notes for "The Credits Roll" in the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack

Super Mario 3D World marks the first appearance of "Super Bell Hill". It is also included in the official albums Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack and The 30th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. Music.

The game also features seven additional arrangements of the theme:

  • An arrangement of "Super Bell Hill" in the key of E major plays in the game's title screen. It is titled "Title Screen" in the Nintendo Music app and the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.
  • A brief arrangement of "Super Bell Hill" plays during the opening cutscene as Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad are enjoying a firework display outside of Peach's Castle. It is titled "Sprixie Kingdom" in the Nintendo Music app and the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.
  • A brief arrangement of "Super Bell Hill" plays when the player clears a level. It is titled "Course Clear!" in the Nintendo Music app and the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.
  • The fanfare that plays when the player clears The Great Tower of Bowser Land, which is an arrangement of "Sprixie Princess Theme" from the same game, quotes "Super Bell Hill", played on brass instruments and in the key of E major. It is titled "Grand Finale" in the Nintendo Music app and the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.
  • A jazzier arrangement of "Super Bell Hill" played on a tenor saxophone and in the key of G major plays during the game's staff credits. It is titled "The Credits Roll" in the Nintendo Music app and the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album. This arrangement also quotes "A Boss Approaches" from the same game approximately 1 minute and 15 seconds in.
  • A brief arrangement of "Super Bell Hill" in the key of A-flat major plays during the cutscene of the player flying the rocket in World 1 to the bonus worlds in outer space. It is titled "Up to the Sky" in the Nintendo Music app and the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.
  • A live recorded violin arrangement of "Super Bell Hill" plays in World Star. It is titled "World Star" in the Nintendo Music app and "World 9" in the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.

"Super Bell Hill" and all of the aforementioned themes return in the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, for the same purposes.

Exclusively in the Nintendo Switch port, a jazz double bass and cymbal arrangement of "Super Bell Hill" in the key of C major plays in the game select screen. It is titled "Choose an Adventure" in the Nintendo Music app.

The Bowser's Fury campaign features two arrangements of "Super Bell Hill":

  • A brief arrangement of "Super Bell Hill" plays during the opening cutscene as Mario takes a stroll in front of Peach's Castle before he notices small puddles of splotchy goop on the path. It is titled "To Lake Lapcat" in the Nintendo Music app.
  • The theme that plays during the staff credits quotes "Super Bell Hill" approximately 1 minute and 30 seconds in. It is titled "Bowser's Fury Credits" in the Nintendo Music app.
