MarioWiki talk:Lists of citations/Super Mario section 1
[edit]
Nintendo of Europe didn't directly distribute the Scandinavian instruction booklets to Sweden and other Scandinavian countries themselves, but through the third-party Bergsala AB, a Swedish distribution company located in Kungsbacka, Sweden. If you look on the back of any Super Mario Swedish instruction booklet, or any Swedish instruction booklet for a Nintendo franchise, you'll see that it says "Imported to Scandinavia by Bergsala AB, Kungsbacka Sweden", which proves that Nintendo didn't directly distribute the games to the Scandinavia region themselves.
Also, Nintendo of Europe didn't directly distribute the Greek instruction booklets to Greece either; the Greek instruction booklets prior to the Game Boy era were distributed by Itochu Hellas Ltd, while the ones distributed since the Game Boy era were distributed by Nortec Multimedia S.A. This can be verified by looking on the back of Greek instruction booklets for Super Mario games, which lists them as the distributors.
Can you correct the Greek and Swedish instruction booklet sources to reflect this? (Admittedly it's partially my fault that I assumed Nintendo directly distributed the booklets to Greece and Scandinavia, based on the existence of pre-existing sources that claim them to be the distributor.)

- I understand Nintendo relied on different distrubtors for their products in certain territories, but the distributor (who are usually not incorporated in citations for texts) and the publisher (who are) are not the same type of subject. Generally, localization, production, printing, and oversight was consolidated under Nintendo of Europe GmbH for all European territories beginning in the mid-1990s, and this is reflected in the backs of their manuals. (For example, Italian booklets stopped mentioning the distributor GiG Electronics around this time, and began attributing details directly to Nintendo with the caveat that they were "printed in Germany", which is referring to Nintendo of Europe GmbH's headquarters. Manuals in the Netherlands, though still reliant on Bandai into the 1990s, began attributing oversight and printing details to Nintendo of Europe GmbH.) At this point, they are the publisher in Europe, even if they still relied on third-party licensees for local distribution. Can you provide a URL link to one of these Scandinavian or Greek manuals that was published after the year 2000 so that I may take a look at its licensing details? - Nintendo101 (talk) 14:22, April 16, 2026 (UTC)

- Thank you. These storefront listings unfortunately do not disclose the pages within the introduction booklets. However, my assertion appears correct from the information apparent. The back of the Swedish booklet displays "printed in Germany", which in my experience signifies the publisher is Nintendo of Europe GmbH. So while distributed by Bergsala AB, Nintendo of Europe is the publisher. They are the ones who oversaw their production and imported them to Bergsala AB. For the Greek manual, it admittedly is less clear. However, it is clear from this article that Nortec was a longtime distribution partner with Nintendo, well into 2015, and the back of the box for the Greek version of Super Mario Advance is exactly the same as the Nintendo of Europe one. In lieau of a look inside the book, I am pretty confidant Nortec is the distributor in Greece, and Nintendo of Europe is still the publisher. It's not uncommon conflation among the editorbase, but the publisher for a piece of media ≠ the distributor of that media. Publishers have heavy oversight and involvement in the production of the media. The distributor, while playing a role, does not, or at least as a much smaller one. Which is why distributors are usually not required in citations, or at least not in any of the purviews I am familiar with. - Nintendo101 (talk) 22:51, April 16, 2026 (UTC)

Missing periodicals[edit]
| This talk page or section has a conflict or question that must be answered. Please try to help and resolve the issue by leaving a comment. |
There are missing periodicals that cover Super Mario series games, specifically the Club Nintendo magazines. Could someone check all of the issues of each version of the magazine and add them to the list? Thank you.

- Hi, Maw-Ray Master. In agregation (Nintendo Power, Official Nintendo Magazine, Club Nintendo, Nintendo-Magasinet, Nintendo-lehti, Nintendo Dream, etc.) are literally hundreds of periodicals, many of which obscure, and it would take a lot of personal time and investiment to track down these sources, review them, identify the important elements for a citation (authors or editors, issue, numbered volume, date, etc.), and add them. I'm sorry, but I don't think this is a reasonable one-off request. If there is a periodical that specifically contains information you think would be useful, I welcome you to share them. - Nintendo101 (talk) 13:09, April 25, 2026 (UTC)
