Rework into Category:Tanukis[edit]

Rework category 10-0
First, some context. The tanuki, also known as the Japanese raccoon dog, is a canine prominent in Japanese mythology. Due to its relative obscurity in the West, tanukis are often re-identified as raccoons during localization, due to their aesthetic similarities (hence the name "raccoon dog").

Tanukis are the basis for Raccoon Mario (who got raccoon-ified during localization) and Tanooki Mario (who kept the original name, although respelled phonetically). Other miscellaneous tanukis have appeared in the Super Mario franchise, such as the Raccoons from Sunshine (who again, are not actual raccoons, but tanukis).

Yet despite how prominent tanukis are in the franchise, there is no proper category for them. Instead, it is split between this category, which holds every subject derived specifically from Raccoon/Tanooki Mario (particularly relating to 3D Land's usage of "Raccoon"-tailed enemies); and Category:Canines, which holds the miscellaneous few.

If this proposal passes, Category:Tails will be converted into Category:Tanukis as a sub-category of Category:Canines, containing all of its current articles, as well as:

As a note, the category is "Tanukis" instead of "Tanookis" due to the inclusion of Penkoon, the Sunshine raccoons, and the Animal Crossing gang, who are not derived from Tanooki Mario.

Support (tanukify!)[edit]

  1. EvieMaybe (talk) per proposal.
  2. Nintendo101 (talk) Tanukially.
  3. Camwoodstock (talk) Makes sense to us; we actually mused about if a separate Tanuki category would be warranted back when we suggested moving Category:Canines back from "Category:Dogs", and it turns out the answer's "there's definitely enough here." Per proposal!
  4. Rykitu (talk) Per all.
  5. Arend (talk) Per proposal; in addition, the category name "Tails" is really confusing, given that a tail is not only an appendage (and NOT a species), but it's an appendage that a lot of animals have, not just tanukis (or foxes). So you'd think that this category would be about any kind of tail, not creatures with specifically a tanuki tail.
  6. SolemnStormcloud (talk) Per all, especially Arend.
  7. Sorbetti (talk) Per all.
  8. Tails777 (talk) Let's rework this category before I end up in there. Per proposal.
  9. Nelsonic (talk) Per all, especially Arend. The name "Tails" for the category implies that, in addition to featuring tanuki tails, it also should/would feature Tails, Fracktail, Can the Eel Come Out to Play?, Plessie, Monchees, Vector, the Earth Vellumental, It'll Grow Back, Dino Piranha, Re-Koils, Alley Rats, Lion's Tail from the Parliament, Eeligon, Map 1, Gnawty, and many others.
  10. Altendo (Raccoon | Tanooki) Per Raccoon Tanooki Tanuki Arena and Tanuki Nelsonic.

Pom-pokomments[edit]

I think I should say I was interpreting the non-Mario form subjects in this category as Subject + Tail from Tanooki Mario, not as Subject + Tanuki. That's why Tails wasn't created as a subcategory of Canines, so in theory it was never supposed to be splitting tanuki subjects into two categories. Really the question is why Tail Goomba and friends never made it into the Canine category while Raccoon Mario did, maybe wiki editors just felt the tail was tacked on rather than changing what the Goomba is. I personally would rather have both "based on Raccoon/Tanooki Mario" and "Tanuki" as categories, but not enough to cast an oppose vote. Tails sits pretty awkwardly in the category tree anyway. Perhaps if there's a 3D Land 2 with more Tail enemies...

Oh and the reason White Raccoon Mario and White Tanooki Mario didn't get in is because I forgot they existed. Whoops! No conspiracy over color being a core part of a tail here. Salmancer (talk) 17:58, May 30, 2025 (EDT)
