Camp Miiverse was an event organized by Nintendo of America on Miiverse in the summers of 2014, 2015, and 2016. It promoted a number of special challenges and competitions across various games for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, some of which were Super Mario games. The event's name and activities invoked a virtual summer camp.

The event was hosted by Nintendo staff members Tom and Amy, with another, Skye, joining them in 2016.[1] During the event, they issued periodic challenges in a dedicated Camp Miiverse Community, which participants had a limited time to complete. To prove they beat a challenge, participants were required to submit a screenshot of their accomplishment in the respective game's community on Miiverse.[2][1] Participants were often split in two competing teams, which they had to tag along with their submissions to indicate their affiliation.[3][4][1] At the end of a challenge period, the team with the most submissions proving their accomplishments was declared the winning team by the hosts. The teams were named after specific Nintendo characters, such as Mario and Zelda, designations that were independent of the game being played; for instance, players were also split between these two teams in the 2014 edition's Wii Sports Club[3] and Pushmo[5] challenges.

History[edit]

2014[edit]

The 2014 edition of Camp Miiverse spanned six weeks, with challenges issued every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The Monday and Wednesday challenges could only be completed within the same day they were issued, while the Friday challenges were available for the entire weekend. There were two types of challenges: individual and team-based. In the latter, participants were split between Team Mario and Team Zelda. Tagging one's team in submissions for individual challenges was optional, although encouraged.[6][5]

Single-day challenges[edit]

The following are single-day challenges that were held in Super Mario–related games.

Weekend challenges[edit]

Starting with the second week, every weekend challenge was hosted in Mario Kart 8 through multiple online tournaments. In the second weekend challenge, players had to compete and achieve a high ranking in the Mario Kart 8 Champions of San Diego tournament, promoted in conjunction with the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con.[11] Subsequent weekend challenges were not tied to external events, instead featuring three daily stand-alone tournaments, each running from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. PT. The game's built-in team system allowed players to join Team Mario or Team Zelda directly within a tournament.[12]

Below is an overview of the tournaments in each weekend challenge from the third through the sixth (final) week.
