The character infobox is used to present general information on unique characters, such as Luigi, Goombario or Toadsworth. These are usually (but not always) identifiable by having a unique name, role or design from their different from their species. For groups of characters, use {{group infobox}}. For species, or species which can occasionally appear as single characters, use {{species infobox}}.

| |title= | By default, this is not necessary, as it will automatically use the article title sans identifier. For special cases, it can be manually specified. |
| |image= | A representative image of the subject - ideally, artwork from the most recently released game. However, if the latest artwork is specialized for that game (e.g. the subject is wearing sporting gear, driving a kart, etc.), an older image may be retained as the infobox image instead. If no artwork of the character's most up-to-date design exists, a screenshot of the subject which shows it clearly is also acceptable.[Proposal 1] Unposed models (commonly referred to as T-pose or A-pose models) are not allowed in the infobox.[Proposal 2] |
| |full_name= | The character's full name (e.g. "King Bowser Koopa" is Bowser's full name). Only use this parameter if the full name is not the same as the title already used for the article or infobox (e.g. do not list Donkey Kong's full name as "Donkey Kong," as it is redundant). |
| |species= | The character's species. Do not list species the character has briefly turned into or any one-off alternate interpretations (e.g. the Super Mario Bros. film). |
| |first_appearance= | The first game, book, cartoon episode, comic issue, movie, etc. that the character appeared in. For characters who first appeared in mangas, the manga's chapter should be listed alongside the title (e.g. Super Mario Kodansha manga ("Star Road to Bowser's Castle")). If the exact chapter is unknown, the volume may be used instead.[Proposal 3] If the subject has been mentioned in a previous media, but did not appear in it, it should not be included in the infobox.[Proposal 4] |
| |latest_appearance= | The latest game and other media that the character has appeared in. This does not include upcoming games: the game must have been released before the infobox can be updated.[Proposal 5] Like the first appearance, the chapter or volume should be listed alongside manga titles when applicable.[Proposal 3] If the subject has been mentioned in a later media, but did not appear in it, it should not be included in the infobox.[Proposal 4] |
