Merge stars that have the same design as Super Stars[edit]

do not merge 3-1-0-1-8
EDIT: I've rewritten this proposal to make the intent more clear. I've also created a draft of what this page would look like when merged with the stars from Yoshi and Mario & Wario and treating the other stars as variants.
For context, this wiki has three different articles for mushroom items that currently have the exact same design: Mushroom, Super Mushroom and Dash Mushroom. The Super Mushroom first appeared in Super Mario Bros., then "genericized" Mushrooms with the same design, but not called "Super" Mushrooms and without the association with powering up, started appearing in other games, most notably as a healing item in RPGs and a speed-boosting item in Mario Kart. Then, the item in Mario Kart started being referred to as the "Dash Mushroom" to distinguish it specifically, despite it still using the exact same design. Originally this wiki split the Mushroom article further, with one specifically about its appearance as a healing item in RPGs, but now any mushroom with the classic red and white design that is clearly not a Super Mushroom or Dash Mushroom is merged into this article.
I think the current arrangement of mushroom articles is fair, because despite the shared designs, Nintendo seems intent on using unique names for Super Mushrooms and Dash Mushrooms due to their distinct behavior, but the other Mushrooms aren't given distinct names, and splitting based on gameplay function alone isn't a particularly great reason because subjects in this franchise can take on many different roles while still being the same entity.
Thing is, the Super Star has a very similar history to the Super Mushroom. It debuted in Super Mario Bros., and since then, "genericized" stars with very similar designs, but without the association with invincibility, have cropped up across the franchise. Examples of these that have their own articles are:
- Stars from Mario & Wario
- Power Star¹
- Star (Mario Party series)
- Mario's Star from Luigi's Mansion
- Star Road (Super Mario World)
- Big Star from New Super Mario Bros.
¹Used this design in its debut game, but was redesigned to be more distinct in Super Mario Galaxy
The goal of this proposal is to treat this "genericized Star" the same way we treat the genericized Mushroom. That is, we merge Star (Mario & Wario) with this page, restructure the page to treat these as the same entity with different roles in the franchise, and treat the other aforementioned stars as variants of this Star. To be clear, Star Road, Super Star, Power Star, Big Star and Mario's Star will stay separate in the same way we keep Super Mushroom and Dash Mushroom separate from Mushroom. (I'm not opposed to merging some of those stars too, but that's best saved for another proposal.)
Additionally, the wiki does not have a separate article for the stars with this design in Yoshi. Its article refers to them as Super Stars, but as far as I can tell, they aren't explicitly referred to as Super Stars in the game or in the manual, and the Star Yoshi transformation in the game could indicate that it isn't a Super Star. Also, Yoshi (NES) (Nintendo Music) and Yoshi (Game Boy) (Nintendo Music) refer to them as just "stars". Maybe it's different in the manga adaptation or Japanese guidebook, but I can't read Japanese. To be fair, this game predates Mario & Wario, which was the first game to unambiguously use the Super Star design for an item generically called a "star" that doesn't make you invincible, so the concept may not have existed at the time. Still, I think we should cover these stars on this hypothetical "genericized" Star page as well. Either that, or we treat that Star as its own item or a Super Star explicitly.
As for article titles... currently, I think a page about all three should be moved to just "Star", since I think its prominence as a design in this franchise means it warrants being treated as the primary subject (see also Gallery:Miscellaneous stars), while Star gets moved to "Star (disambiguation)", but if we exclude the stars from Yoshi, then "Star (Super Mario franchise)" could work. I feel iffy about using the Super Mario label if we treat the item from Yoshi as the same thing, but that's also an option.

Combine Star (Mario & Wario) and the stars from Yoshi with this page[edit]
- Dive Rocket Launcher (talk) My preference.
- Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - I support parity with Mushroom, making a singular page for the miscellaneous "basic-ified" version of the prior power-up.
- Camwoodstock (talk) Per proposal, and how we handle Mushroom as-is.
#SolemnStormcloud (talk) This makes sense. Per proposal.
Merge Star (Mario & Wario) with this page, but keep treating the stars from Yoshi as Super Stars[edit]
- Dive Rocket Launcher (talk) I'm also okay with this.
Cover the stars from Yoshi on Star (Mario & Wario), but keep this page separate[edit]
Create a separate page for the stars from Yoshi, but do not merge this page or Star (Mario & Wario)[edit]
- Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - Secondary choice, since relative to each other, they are most likely incidental.
Do nothing[edit]
- EvieMaybe (talk) I think there is some merit to this idea, but I would still like to oppose it. I think a better to handle this would involve enabling subpages in mainspace, and making each specialized Star a subpage of THE Star.... but until that happens, the current scheme works well enough.
- Mario (talk) I recall proposing splitting off this page for a reason years ago. This proposal attempts to deal with an inconsistency with how we deal with Stars vs Mushrooms, but I don't think this is the way to go. While the way the Mario series have arbitrarily handled Stars and Mushrooms has resulted in a hodge podge mess of confusing pages that are arbitrary in what's merged or not or what should belong where (the Mushrooms in Mario Tennis or Mario Strikers are not under Dash Mushroom despite being a clear call-back to these "Dash Mushrooms" and are not in the Super Mushroom article either, but are in the Mushroom article whose articleabout template specifies it's about the "healing items", alongside Mushrooms from Mario Party which some information is randomly located in Dash Mushroom; explanations likely exist but immediately there is little intuitive reason for this), I don't think the solution here is to mirror the current setup of the Mushroom page, but instead to find a workable solution to current state of these pages (I recommend thinking about splitting per function but this isn't as easy as it sounds; otherwise we'd be doing this already). I think this article's purpose, since it deals with a highly recurring variant of a Star that has a common function throughout Mario Party, is very straightforward, very easily searchable, and it works, and the attempt to merge this with Mario & Wario's Stars, and possibly the Yoshi stars, or maybe not the Yoshi Stars, but not "Power Star" and not the Star from Mario's Time Machine will result in a baffling assortment of information of unrelated subjects. The resulting article is going to be really heavy on the Mario Party information with some information dedicated to the one-off appearance. At least this page currently, you can understand right away what it's about; people will find the information they want and not have to question the Mario & Wario information and Yoshi information that's in the article about Mario Party, unlike those Mushroom pages. Why replicate these Mushroom pages? Why is the premise of this assuming these Mushroom pages work?
- LadySophie17 (talk) Honestly I would rather merge the Mario Party Star into Power Star than any of these. Why is one option to "keep treating the stars from Yoshi as Power Stars" when, as far as I can see, they are currently not treated as Power Stars?
- Nintendo101 (talk) Per Mario and LadySophie17. The current proposal only works on the assumption that the Mushroom article is a well-organized page. The proposer has not substantiated why. Convention alone is not a substantive reason for making any kind of decision: it has to make sense on its own. Personally, I find Mushroom flawed in premise and contents. Not every subject covered in it is related to one another. It depresses subjects with discrete and recurring gameplay for no substantive reason, and makes editing unintuitive. I would sooner see it reorganized than see Star (Mario Party series) fall to the same fate. Evie's idea has merit in the long-term, but even then, I would not support treating yellow star item with black eyes as appearances of the same subject.
- SolemnStormcloud (talk) This does not make sense. Per all.
- Tails777 (talk) I've voiced my thoughts on how the Mushrooms work and still today, I feel there could be different ways to cover these objects Nintendo uses interchangeably. Mushrooms and Stars are used more for their iconic design rather than consistently for what they do. I just feel a broader discussion should be held if we wanna change anything. Otherwise, make things less complicated than they already are.
- Spencer PK (talk) I do not think the Mushroom article is a good example as explained by others, and I feel that merging other subjects into the Mario Party series Star would make the article not be able to focus as effectively on Mario Party anymore and begin to suffer the same flaws as the Mushroom article. Per all.
- Wilben (talk) Per all.
#Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - Yoshi Star can either go in its own place (like M&W's already does) or the subjects named "Star" with no specification can go together a la Mushroom. I do not support considering the Power Stars or the Mario Party Stars to be the same as Super Star, though.
Prankster comment detected[edit]
@EvieMaybe If you don't want to merge anything, then what do you suggest we do about the stars in Yoshi? We still have to decide if it's specifically a Super Star or not, and if not, where to cover it.

- I sadly do not know enough about Yoshi to make a judgment. However, I do not think which star they are should affect the divide between Power Stars and Mario Party Stars and Super Stars. — eviemaybe

@Doc von Schmeltwick You're misinterpreting the proposal. I'm not saying we should treat Power Stars or Super Stars as the same thing as the Mario Party stars. I'm saying we should treat the Mario Party stars, the stars from Mario & Wario, and the stars from Yoshi as the same concept. "the subjects named "Star" with no specification can go together a la Mushroom" is exactly what I'm proposing to do. I want to keep treating Super Stars and Power Stars as separate in the same way that we treat Super Mushrooms and Dash Mushrooms as different from regular Mushrooms.
Dive Rocket Launcher 23:47, May 23, 2026 (UTC)
- Oh, OK. I was mis-interpreting due to the list at the top. I'd suggest making an option to give the Yoshi Stars a completely unique page, as I don't see one. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:56, May 23, 2026 (UTC)
@LadySophie17 That was a typo, it should've said "Super Stars" instead of "Power Stars". My B.
Dive Rocket Launcher 15:16, June 2, 2026 (UTC)
@Mario I wasn't aware of the stars in Mario's Time Machine. If I knew about that, I would've included it in my proposal, but it doesn't seem like it's worth the effort to include it with how the votes are turning out.
Dive Rocket Launcher 19:38, June 3, 2026 (UTC)
- You may have to parse through these pages to find any other stars you've missed, because I didn't. I just found a Star that didn't behave exactly like the typical stars in the platformers.

I'm curious why the opposition is opposing the option to give "Yoshi" Stars a unique page too. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:26, June 3, 2026 (UTC)
- I don't think this option is appropriate for this talk page proposal (it's completely unrelated to Star (Mario Party series), which will lead to issues referring back to it if it passes, and I'd like to first figure out how we're going to split any object on their function first.
It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 01:34, June 4, 2026 (UTC)
This proposal is probably going to fail, though I would like to revisit this idea again in the future. I know there's a growing sentiment among editors that we need to start splitting up pages based on function for the sake of better coverage, and I do agree with that to some extent (we already do this for locations in some games, after all), though I think rejecting this proposal based on a method of splitting pages that hasn't been formally established yet is putting the cart before the horse. After all, we still haven't decided how pages would get split up, whether it be purely based on function, by series, or some combination of the two. If this proposal were to pass, we could always decide to re-split the Mario Party stars after deciding on how to split up pages.
I still think there's merit to treating the genericized star as the basis for all of the stars I mentioned, in the same way we treat the genericized mushroom. Yes, that page is disorganized and merging the stars might make a disorganized page as well (though personally, I think the draft I made is perfectly comprehensible), but I still think merging the stars more accurately reflects how this design is used in the franchise.
If we were to split up the mushroom page into separate pages covering its iterations as a healing item, Mario Party item, et cetera, I think there should still be a base mushroom page that links to those using {{main}} in its history sub-sections, and we still refer to them as the same item, similar to how we handle RPG locations. Once that happens, then we could do something similar for the star. Thoughts? Concerns? Any reason to reject this idea other than "we should split subjects by function more"?
