Speed Skating 500m is a Speed Skating Event that appears in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The objective of the event is to finish in the fastest time, with the event taking place in the Adler Arena. Toads, Charmy and Chao appear as referees in this event.

GameplayEdit

In this event, the player directly competes against one opponent, but their overall ranking in the event is decided by their times compared to all of the opponents. To start the event, the player must first hold the Wii Remote in a speed skater's stance, and must swing it down when "Go!" appears onscreen to start the event. If they swing the remote down with perfect timing, the player will gain a starting boost, though swinging down too early will delay the player's start. Once the player has started, they must quickly swing the Wii Remote left and right o build up speed, with more speed being built up the faster that they swing. After the starting stretch has been completed, the player then continues by swinging their Wii Remote left and right on time with the onscreen markings, with better timed swings giving them a larger boost of speed. If the player swings with perfect timing, they can begin a perfect combo, which allows them to perform a special boost after performing three perfect swings in a row. After performing the first special boost, the player must then perform four perfects in a row to receive the next one, and further special boost perfect combo requirements increase by one each time. As the player enters the final stretch, the onscreen markers will be removed and the player must keep up the timing of the Wii Remote swings to complete the race. The character with the fastest tie wins the event.

TutorialEdit

  1. Stance / Starting
Let's talk about how to start the race.
When "On Your Mark" appears on the TV screen, hold the Wii Remote Plus in a speed skater's starting pose.
When you are posed correctly, "OK" appears on the TV screen.
    Next let's talk about starting.
To start, swing the Wii Remote Plus down when the "Go!" signal is given.
Swing at the same time as the "Go!" signal for a starting dash.
Try assuming the stance and starting now.
  2. Building Up Speed
Let's talk about getting up to speed after starting.
To get up to speed, swing the Wii Remote Plus left and right rapidly.
Try getting up to speed now.
  3. Skating
Let's talk about how to skate.
While skating, swing the Wii Remote Plus left and right like a speed skater. If you swing with the right timing, you'll speed up.
The half-circle on the TV screen is a visual guide for swinging you arm.
Swing the Wii Remote Plus just as the mark reaches the edge of the visual guide for perfect timing.
Next let's talk about the special boost.
While skating, get a Perfect three times in a row for a 3-perfect combo and a special boost.
You need a 4-Perfect combo for the second special boost, and a 5-Perfect combo for the third one--for each additional special boost, you need to put together a longer combo.
    Try performing a combo now.
  4. Final Sprint
Let's talk about the final sprint.
When you get to the last straight, the final sprint begins.
The visual guide is hidden during the final sprint, so swing the Wii Remote Plus with the rhythm you've learned.
    Try the final sprint now.

Control HintsEdit

  • If you are successful with your stance before starting the race, you will gain more speed with the starting dash.
  • The best time to swing the Wii Remote Plus is when the top mark flashes on the visual guide. The guide flashes twice quickly, but the first flash is the best time.
