The Nvidia Shield TV (stylized as NVIDIA SHIELD TV) is a digital media player and microconsole based on the Android TV platform. Produced by Nvidia, it was initially released in 2015, with additional revisions in 2017 and 2019.
In December 2017, for the Nvidia Shield TV's Chinese launch and as part of a partnership between Nvidia and Nintendo, select Wii games would receive enhanced Shield ports (running via emulation),[4] released exclusively in China.[2] These versions of the games ran in high definition, featured reworked control schemes for traditional gamepads, and were fully localized into simplified Chinese. Among other titles, New Super Mario Bros. Wii was available at launch. A port of Mario Kart Wii, which would have featured online multiplayer,[5] was never released, due to the lengthy government approval process for video games in China.[6]
The Wii games released on the Nvidia Shield TV were later delisted in 2021, with the verification server allowing them to be played shut down in 2022, due to the Shield TV's discontinuation in China.[3][7][8]
