The Nintendo MP3 Player (known as the PLAY-YAN micro in Japan) is a media player add-on for the Game Boy Advance and, by extension, is usable with the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite. The PLAY-YAN micro is able to play MP3, ASF, and MP4 files while the Nintendo MP3 Player supports only MP3 files. The headphone socket in the cartridge allows the user to bypass the Game Boy Advance's sound hardware and listen to media in higher fidelity. The cartridge is able to read up to one gigabyte of data from an external SD card. As with the PLAY-YAN, Nintendo sold a PLAY-YAN micro bundle that included a "MediaStage" CD, software that allows users to convert media files to be compatible with the PLAY-YAN micro.[1] Unlike the original PLAY-YAN, the PLAY-YAN micro does not have the ability to play the downloadable minigames from Nintendo's website.[3]
Being released in the same year as the Happy! Mario 20th event in Japan, the PLAY-YAN micro features a Super Mario Bros. theme alongside the standard theme. This theme is also present in the Nintendo MP3 Player. The PLAY-YAN micro requires the user to modify the device's INI file using an external device to change the theme, while the Nintendo MP3 Player has an in-game menu to choose the theme.
In the audio player, the player controls Mario, who acts as the cursor. Audio files are represented by coins and folders are represented by brick tunnels that Mario jumps into when they are selected. At the top and bottom of the file list are Warp Pipes that Mario jumps into to reach the other end of the list. Making Mario jump through a pipe may cause him to be replaced with Luigi. While an audio file is playing, white Super Stars fall diagonally and fade into black in the sky, and Goombas and Koopa Troopas walk across the bottom of the screen. Additionally, pressing makes Mario bob his head. Doing this repeatedly causes the coins on the other steps to recede and be replaced with blue-colored clones that mimic the player. Pressing the
button to one of five rhythms causes Mario to perform certain actions.
In the PLAY-YAN micro's movie player, Mario stands in an elevator next to the movie files. While scrolling to another page, the doors on the elevator close.
