It includes citations for in-game menus, in-game dialogue, instruction booklets, official websites, books, and other such sources generally organized by game. Sections are navigatiable using the table to the right. Where Nintendo has officially hosted PDFs for the public to view, they are provided for their relevant citations.

Citing and writing

Why do we cite things?

In all my years, I do not think I have met many people who like citing works. Anyone who has attended school knows about citing references, and many people find it to be needless, superfluous busy work. They would not do it unless explicitly required. I sympathize. Citing works is hard. It is tedious. However, that is not quite the same as being needless. The unfortunate reality is that there are good reasons why authors, editors, and researchers utilize citations. They are tools to help your readerbase and the text your are writing. How so depends on who you ask or what they are writing about. However, I have personally distilled three main universal reasons:

  1. It allows your readerbase to understand where the information you wrote came from, and gives them the information to check it themselves if they so desire.
  2. It builds trust with the readerbase by demonstrating you are not fabricating information written, which is especially important if you are building an argument based on the objective knowledge of someone else.
  3. Finally, it strengthens the longevity and reliability of your work. If you include a citation once, you should never again have to worry if a reader will not understand what you are writing about or where it came from. You gave them everything they need. For collaborative projects, perhaps another writer will come along in the subsequent years and find what you provided is helpful to their own projects too. You never know what the future may hold.

There are less utilitarian reasons why citations are used. For example, for me, I do not like feeling like I am taking advantage of the labor of others, so if I learn something from the research of someone else, it feels like I am doing them a disservice by not citing their work. (One should take note that in more professional spaces, you can get in serious trouble for presenting information as if it is yours. Outside of that though, it just feels unkind for its own merits.)

Here on Super Mario Wiki, our policies discourage citations for obvious information from the games, which is for good reason. For all intents and purposes, our wiki is the reference people use for such information, and there are users who play games on the fly and just write articles for what they are doing as they play. To cite that type of stuff would be needless busy work. However, for cryptic and obscure information, research on development or creative choices, as well material restricted to non-English localizations, all the principles I relay above apply to citations on Super Mario Wiki. Additional details about citing and the wiki's policies concerning references are readable on our citations policy and instructions page.
