Drill Spinning is a technique used by Mario and Luigi in New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and Super Mario Maker. In New Super Mario Bros., this skill can be performed after jumping off a Spin Block. While Mario or Luigi is in the air, the player should press and hold +Control Pad down. This causes Mario or Luigi to move in a downward, drill-like spin, which allows Mario or Luigi to break multiple Brick Blocks in a row. It also makes Mario or Luigi's descent much faster, though restricts their horizontal movement. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and Super Mario Maker, characters in their propeller forms can press +Control Pad down while flying in midair to perform a Drill Spin. In New Super Mario Bros., unlike Ground Pound, there is no way to stop a Drill Spin. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. U, the Drill Spin from the Propeller Mushroom lasts only as long as the +Control Pad down is held; the Drill Spin can be stopped and started several times in midair.

The Drill Spin later reappears in Super Mario Odyssey, where it is used when Mario ground pounds after performing a Spin Jump.
