Drill Spinning is a technique used by Mario and Luigi in New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, and New Super Luigi U. In New Super Mario Bros., this skill can be performed after jumping off a Spin Block. While Mario or Luigi is in the air, the player should press and hold +Control Pad down. This causes Mario or Luigi to move in a downward, drill-like spin, which allows Mario or Luigi to break multiple Brick Blocks in a row. It also makes Mario or Luigi's descent much faster, though restricts their horizontal movement. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, and New Super Luigi U, the propeller characters can press +Control Pad down while flying in midair to perform a Drill Spin. Unlike the Ground Pound, there is no way to stop a Drill Spin once started.

The Drill Spin later reappears in Super Mario Odyssey, where it is used when Mario ground pounds after performing a Spin Jump.
