Mario wearing a Question Box in Super Mario 3D Land.

Question Boxes are items introduced in the Nintendo 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land. They are only found in World 8-1, World 8-4 and Special 1-3. Question Boxes have an identical appearance to a Question Block. Like the Propeller Box, they can be worn by Mario over his head. It cannot be taken off unless he hits an enemy. If Mario makes it to the Flagpole with the Question Box, it disappears and a 1-Up is received. While inside a Question Box, infinite coins will pop out from it while he is moving.

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, similar objects known as Gold Blocks appear which give Mario coins at a much faster rate than the Question Boxes. Unlike Question Boxes, however, a Gold Block will disappear once 100 coins have been collected from it.

Question Boxes will return in the upcoming Wii U game Super Mario 3D World. This time, much like the Gold Blocks from New Super Mario Bros. 2, they appear by hitting a Coin Block enough times before it expires.
