Winter Sports Champion Race is a Dream Event that appears in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The objective of the event is to complete the course in the fastest time, with the event taking place on Mini Russia Island.

Gameplay

In this event, the player can switch between several sets of equipment, though always starts the event on skis. To start, the player must swing the Wii remote down when "Go!" appears on screen, and can charge up power for a faster start by holding . The player can perform a faster start by swinging the Wii Remote down with better timing, but will have a delayed start if the swing down too early. Once on the course, the player can steer by tilting the Wii Remote left and right, and speed up by tilting it forward, and turn while speeding up by twisting the remote in the desired direction, for all types of gear. To change gear, the player must pass through one of the four gear gates positioned along the course. The gear is separated into two types, snow-type, the skis and snowboard, which go faster on snow but slower on ice, and ice-type, the ice skates and bobsleigh, which are faster on ice and slower on snow. The player can pass through a gate for one of the two types and will receive a piece of gear from it, allocated at random if they are the first to pass through, however is a character has gone though the gate first, the gear it provides is shown above the gate. Each gear has a unique ability. Skis can perform longer jumps from ramps by swinging the Wii Remote upwards, Snowboards can grind on rails by tilting the Wii Remote to maintain balance, Ice Skates can pass though narrow routes by tilting the Wii Remote to keep balanced, and Bobsleighs can smash through barricades. By using he special techniques, each gear can access specific shortcuts, which are indicated onscreen. Ice skates can also perform a special dash by pressing once. At the end of course, the snow and ice is replaced with artificial surface, which all gear travel across at the same speed. The character that reaches the finish line in the fastest time wins the event.

1. Common Controls (Turning / Speeding Up)

   The basic controls are the same for the four sets of gear you switch between (skis, snowboard, ice skates, bobsleigh).
   First, we will explain starting. All players are equipped with skis at the start point.
   To start, swing the Wii Remote Plus down when the "Go!" signal is given.
   Try practising the start now.
   Nest we'll talk about turning.
   Tilt the Wii Remote Plus left or right to turn left or right.
   Let's try turning now.
   Next we will explain speeding up.
   To speed up, tilt the Wii Remote Plus forward.
   Twist the Wii Remote Plus left or right to turn at high speed.
2. Changing Gear
   Let's talk about switching from one type of gear to another.
   This is a gear-change gate. You can pass through it to switch to different gear.
   If no one has passed through the gate yet, skis, snowboard or ice skates will be selected at random.
   However, if an opponent ha already passed through the gate, the icon will switch, showing which set of gear it will change you to.
   Try going through a gear-change gate now.
   You've changed your gear. There is both "snow type" and "ice type" gear.
   Skis and snowboards are snow gear, while ice skatesand bobsleighs are ice gear.
   Snow gear is faster on snow but slower on ice, while ice gear is faster on ice but slower on snow.
3. Ski-Only Techniques
   Let's talk about techniques you can use while skiing.
   Skis let you make longer jumps. If you time your jumps well, they can even lead to a shortcut.
   To jump, swing the Wii Remote Plus up at the end of a jump ramp.
   Try jumping now.
   Build up speed and jump at the very edge of a ramp for an even bigger jump.
4. Snowboard-Only Techniques
   Let's talk about techniques you can use while snowboarding.
   Snowboards let you grind on rails. You can ride rails to take a shortcut.
   While grinding on a rail, tilt the Wii Remote Plus left and right to maintain balance.

   Maintain balance while grinding for a speed boost.
5. Ice Skate-Only Techniques
   Let's talk about techniques you can use while skating.
   While skating, you can cross narrow ice routes and maintain balance to keep from falling. Follow narrow ice routes to take a shortcut.
   After you switch to ice skates, you can press for a special boost just once.
   Try passing through a narrow ice route now.
   When passing through a narrow ice route, tilt the Wii Remote Plus left and right to maintain your balance.
6. Bobsleigh-Only Techniques
   Let's talk about techniques you can use while riding the sled.
   Bobsleighs let you break through barricades. Barricades lead to shortcuts.
   You can break through barricades simply by running into them on the sled.
